You described, to perfection, how I feel about the X2D experience, Hugh. When my D-Lux 8 arrives, I suspect I’ll shoot it almost exclusively mono. I love your closing sentiments in this video - a man of depth you are.
As an owner of an X2D and the 80mm1.9, 45P and 28P a can relate to everything you have said in this video. The colors are incredible. As is the 15 stop contrast range and IBIS. I only shoot for myself because beginning 2023 i had a heart problem and i promised myself that isni get out of this in ine piece i will give myself a new Hasselblad in stead of always buying second hand and not buying a Hasselblad in my youth because i could get more bang for my buck with Bronica. Well i got more but it wasn't a bang. So the week after a small heart surgery i received a nice box from Hasselblad... All is well with my health and i haven't had a single moment of regret spending a lot of money. Everything about this camera gives me pleasure and there is infinite morw pleasure to live withe the images i take with this camera while i live than to be dead with money on the bank account. This camera gives color to my life. And as someone who always only did Black & White film and ambrotype that is quite a change. Especially because i never got satisfying colors from my film proces when i tried. And the Hasselblad does what i never got before. But i will stop rambling.... Great video 👍
Spot on observations! I tried the X1D in 2020 and my jaw dropped when I saw the images. This was after having already used SL2 with APO primes and GFX system as well. The colors are not only richer but also believable at the same time, a very difficult balance to achieve. Lenses like the XCD 90 F3.2 and XCD 80 F1.9 render even mundane scenes like paintings. Sold everything and own the X2D now. X1DII is a great buy today with used prices very reasonable and that sensor is still hard to beat for the colors.
Hugh, this might be my favorite of any of your videos I've seen. In addition to stellar photography and compelling video montages, you write and express such beautiful prose! Be well and keep sharing your poetic imagery. It's a light in an often troubling world. Thank you.
Hugh, you've hit the nail squarely on the head with this video. One of your best to date and your closing sentiments really touched a nerve. Maybe it's an age thing but I for one agree wholly with your observations. on a separate note, you should do a workshop here in Scotland, possibly Edinburgh I think you & Claudia would absolutely love it.
What's the deal with the images at 00:03:27, 00:03:29 and 00:03:34? They look like images taken with a phone doing a really poor job of faking bokeh blur. Notice the bench how one side is blurry while the other in in focus? Also in the bench, near the lady's right arm, notice how there is a patch of blur? Have smartphone images mistakenly made their way into the selection of images for this video?
@@3BMEP Makes sense... Also funny you should need to do that, because the sheer size of the Hassleblad sensor is conducing to great quality natural lens blur.
2.5 is just about 2.0, and I wanted just a touch more. It’s only a matter of time before software blur becomes really excellent; when it does, it will change the photon/electron balance yet again. 😊🖖🏻
I love your channel, but you dropped the ball on this one. Never add extra blur because your credibility will go out the window. How are we supposed to believe that the colors shown here are not overly edited. But it's a great clip, and I'm looking forward to your next one🎉
I’ve used Hasselblad’s H system for many years in our studio. Incl. the H6D-100 until 1,5y ago. Up until then, I wasn’t impressed by the X1D. The MkII changed my mind a bit, but the X2D made me switch completely. We use them for fashion and beauty and to me, there’s no system like it for that. Not only the colors are great even without post, but when you edit them (sometimes you have to, in order to create something special), they don’t fall apart. The V lenses are a huge step up in terms of AF, compared to the original X lenses. Both the X1DII and the X2D handle so much better and easier than the H6D, that I have no regrets at all. Simply the best cameras I’ve ever used for fashion and beauty.
Totally agree about the X1D and the MKII. The X2D made me switch from Fuji GFX. I am a landscape photographer and the X2D, with the V lenses, is perfect for that. In fact it takes me back to 4x5. I also used the X2D recently to photograph a wedding - it was perfect in terms of handling and hardly needed any colour adjustments.
My fellow Ocular-White-Balance-Asymmetry man. I've brought this occurrence up with friends in the past and no one ever knew what I was talking about. I feel seen, sir. As a child I would walk around the house switching between eyes (one open, one closed) to switch between slight variations in color perception and always wondered, "which is correct?" if there is such a thing. The effect is exponentially more prominent when entering an indoor environment from time spent outdoors with heavy sun. Also, a glasses wearer (two very different prescriptions per eye) and every now and then just kind of look around without them. Living life defocused at f/1.2. I enjoy the ability to shift my view of the world around me.
My wife and I went to Oguquit every year for many many years. It truly was our favorite place by the sea. Listening to you talk about your walks on the beach and the pictures you posted brought back many happy memories.
The colors really do look amazing, even on TH-cam. I was tempted by the first iteration of these but bought a GFX 50R as it was same sensor and Fuji had a very good deal on them at the time. I sold my Mamiya 7 to finance it. Long story short, I never really got on with the Fuji, didn't love the images or the process of using it and ended up selling it and repurchasing the Mamiya 7 as I could never really achieve what a roll of Portra 400 in the Mamiya could. Even run of the mill scans from my local lab gave me that wholly sh*t feeling when I brought them into Lightroom. Would love to have this on digital, looking at the X1D used prices now...
Yup, the x2d is my if I win a lottery camera but I have been saying that the color science in the x2d is hands down the best since I saw the first photos out of this camera.
Great video. I decided to subscribe. I just got my Earth Explorer version of the X2D in. I haven’t unboxed it yet, but can’t wait. Appreciate the info. My dad was a pro photographer and used Hassy film cameras exclusively. He retired as digital was rising. And BTW… your voice is amazing. You should be doing voiceovers, too!
Using LEICA M system since 1986, also the Leica Q, and X-Pro series since 2012 I like them all a lot. However, I always had to correct colors in too many circumstances. The Fujis always tend to cold tint in shadows, especially showing wrong greens. And even the M 11 has a magenta tint in sunshine shoots. Having used the X2D since a couple of months I did not correct their colors ONCE. Kudos to Hasselblad’s colors. The bad thing: the never ending emnity Hasselblad/ Phase One forces me as a Capture One user into an awesome workflow that drives me crazy 😮! Holger
The human eye is the final arbiter of color science and since we all have our own eye(s) we all have our own color science. I've run across this before - some photographers are color centered where I am more subject centered. Don't get me wrong, I love HNCS and color is very important but not at the expense of an interesting subject. I've been shooting Hasselblad cameras for about 12 years starting with the H series and moving into the X1D, X1Dii and about a year ago the X2D which is my favorite camera for non-action photography. I actually love the fact that the auto focus isn't that so great. It slows me down and I always manually focus just before I shoot. This "slowing down" is very important in most forms of photography. It allows me to explore my composition and look closer. I used to take lots of pictures thinking I can always pick when I get home but that just doesn't work. Slowing down is key! Loved you video as I do all your work!
I am not a Doctor but Hugh, based on my own experience it sounds like you may have a cataract in one of your eyes. I was surprised how blue the world suddenly became when mine were removed. But then this ability to use each eye for assessing warm and cold colour tones may be a blessing for you. 🤔Another great video - thanks for sharing it.
My father eventually developed cataracts. I wonder. As you suggest, however, it may not be something to correct. I’ll continue to think about it, Stephen. Thanks!
I was thinking the same thing. My dad was always corrected by my mother (she liked to correct people) when he referred to his "black sweater" but since having cataracts removed he now accepts that it is blue, and that she was right.
Hello Hugh, Your just so right. "Hold that thought"(Sorry) My life started with Hasselblad back in the 1980's. So when they released the X series I was very interested as the Fuji GFX came out with a very short time, as someone used to manual cameras and knowing my local camera store(No longer) had both cameras I went to see them and they let mr have both to test. To be honest there is not a lot between them. There for me were two thing the Hasselblad had or is better with Natural Colour and handling. So after a week of going though the files I went back and got the Hasselblad X1D and over time most of the lenses for the system. When the X2D came out I when out and got one. For me it one of thoughts cameras that make you want to go out and shot or even find an excuse to go out and shot.
This camera is a step or two what I need, can justify, or can afford. But the real interesting thing I discovered was in checking prices on it and a lens - it is very compatible price wise with buying a Leica M11 and lens. But it does give a professional who does color their Holy Grail - so to speak. We can always dream. Using my Q2 Monochrome just makes me smile even more. We each have our own Holy Grail.
Great video! I have had my X2D for about a year, picked it up used at BH for about $6300. Before hasselblad , I was primarily GFX shooter for a couple of years and loved that system. And before Fuji GFX, I was a stone cold Sony shooter. I brought the A7 and left Sony at A7R4, the A7R5 is their best. I had the Nikon D90/850/z7 and loved that system as well. But I have to tell you, for me, every time I go out shooting with the X2D, the experience is always emotional, the overall handling and the user experience is the best, imo. The X2D just get out your way. It is the only camera system that consistently inspires me to shoot, even when I am not in the mood. I also agree that the Hassy color science is the best, and yeah you can tweak the colors any modern camera and get close, but you will not get the hasselblad character that can't be explained. As a matter of fact, I convert 50% of shots to B&W and oh baby, the tonality is breathtaking. I like the B&W that comes out of my X2D much more then my Q2M, which I will be selling. But the Q2M is my second favorite camera; only if the EVF was bigger, more magnification and had a eye cup. All that is to say, great video and I agree. The best camera is the one you have with you! Just get out and shoot because there are moments that needs to be captured. Happy shooting to all!!!
Hasselblad, the iconic Swedish camera company, is currently owned by DJI, the Chinese drone maker. Soon China will make the best, drones, cameras and wristwatches.
Hugh, I am interested to know if you have adapted any long primes, eg Canon 400 doiif4, to either of the medium format systems. I am feeling compelled to replace my R5 with either the GFX100sii or the X2D, but still want to be able to use my long prime
Tested one once and I must say that the auto white balance can’t be fooled, no matter the condition. It gives the best results no matter what you compare it to.
Because of you I bought the X2D and the 25mm V lens. Thank you for your review, I trust your opinion. I’m waiting for you to come out to S.F. Silicon Valley CA
@@johannesbasuki391even though I’m primarily a B&W shooter, I want to retain color channel information to aid editing; and I want to retain the OPTION of rendering in color. I rarely shoot above ISO 12,500/12,800 and am happy with the resolution and noise levels I get with 61mp even when gated by a Bayer filter. But that’s just me. You do you - it’s all good! 😊🖖🏻
I currently shoot the M11-P. Before that, the original GFX100. The colours in my M11 never grab my artistic self in the same way that the GFX did. I have to say the X2D is attractive to me but it would have to be my only camera. Do you think it can be a travel and documentary camera or is it too big etc? I also love the X-Pan crop, which I recreated in the GFX quite well.
Two different animals, although because your current camera is an M11-P, those differences may not matter to you - although both systems are NUCH bigger and heavier than your M. GFX has better AF, wider lens selection, video… you really do have to have it in hand to make a considered decision.
The GFX was just too much to carry. I had the original with the built in grip and that and four lenses required a team of porters! 😂 The X2D produces amazing output from everything I’ve seen - and oh, the colours! However I’m a bit wary even though the M has some irritations. Living in rural NZ it’s very hard to get physical hands on these things but I’ll see what I can do.
Hugh, excellent , right to the heart. So you were in my neighborhood. I personally believe that Maine is a photographers dream. Color or black and white they both work great here. The Hassey's color science is spectacular right out of camera. Thanks Hugh great video, and you are right just slow down.
I’ve used Phocus and Phocus 2 - beautifully simple interface, nicely done - but I use so many cameras that I’m used to my Adobe workflow and don’t really want to deviate from it. 😊🖖🏻
Wonderful content (e.g. thinking and presentation), as always. Love how you seamlessly weave humanity into your discussion about gear. Lovely. But you're no real help at all to me, in this particular matter, me who has been resisting adding an X2D and lens(es) to my Nikon filled bag 😃 No 'need' just pure beautiful lust for Hasselblad drives me. And it'll only require my putting off retirement for another year :) Thank you, sir, for your fine videos.
@@3BMEP No issues with my being 'bored' once I retire, especially if I have the X2D to create with :) And excellent point you make; no worries I am incredibly grateful for the gear I have already to make photos. Cheers!
That system looks good in your hands. The color photos are reminiscent of film (at least on my iPad), but even better. How do the Leica SL3 colors compare to the Hasselblad (w/Leica SL lenses)?
I love my GFX100s ii and my Leica Q3, but the Hasselblad System is just worlds apart I love my 907x50c. I wish it had more speed for travel, but for portraits it is a monster!
Great video (as usual), Hugh (P.S. Glad you and Claudia had a great time in one of MY favorite places, York and Ogunquit). But I wondered if it would be possible to "import" Hasselblad's amazing color (or colour if you prefer) solution to Lightroom. Okay maybe not but maybe close. I made an assumption that while EACH X2D or CFV 100c back is "individually" calibrated I figured "on average" the profiles must be relatively close to one another. So I downloaded some Hasselblad X2D Raw Files...and loaded them into Lightroom where I saw a profile that showed up for each called "camera standard" (which I had read on someone else's post in DPReview that that happens). I tried to create a preset but that was a no go. So I simply copied the settings (command C on an Apple Mac) of one of the un-onkapatchkied Raw files in the develop module (which I assumed was no different than an unretouched jpg) and then opened up a RAW file taken with the Sony A7CR I just bought. VOILA! Sony colors were replaced with Hasselblad colors -- I think. Would the difference in bit depth make a. difference? Perhaps. Nonetheless...Wow! Lovely. Just lovely. HUGE difference HUGH! (Again maybe not EXACTLY the HBCS but not garrish in the slightest). I can certainly understand how you so love their science. Now I can apply it to my "poor man's Hasselblad" set up I've created. Thanks again for your insights and inspirations.
Thanks for the information as well as the great way in which you articulate your point of view. I love the look of the images on the Hasselblad 2d without all the manipulation, so their color science is extremely important. Again it is not the destination but the road well travelled for the journey.
That's what I think Hasselblad has been trying to do. Beautiful color right out of the camera because all those years ago they ruled with photo emulsion
Fascinating video, I enjoyed it, thank you. I learned recently that the Sony sensor used by Hasselblad is formulated explicitly by Hasselblad. They utilize HNCS with Phocus software, it can take more advantage of colour, highlights & shadows etc, than Adobe ever could for Medium Format images. I know native raw editors for most brands do similar for FF cameras.
In all of the reviews of the X2D I've watched and read, I have somehow missed the part about auto iso not working in manual mode. That ruins the camera for me, as manual aperture/manual shutter/auto iso is my favorite way to shoot. drat. Better to find out now than after purchasing, though.
And that, to me, is the real tragedy. It isn't that the camera can't do it, customers just aren't allowed to. I've gotten burned by the waiting for firmware updates game before, so I'm going to have to hold off or reconsider until that update comes.
Nothing comes close, colourwise, to the Leica M8/M9 and Hasselblad H2 to H4 CCD digital backs. Benchmark. Easiest to edit with the most extensive colour palette.
Marvelous or not, I can't use this. Not because I didn't want to, but because Hasselblad doesn't want me to. I tried to get into this system. I decided to buy a couple lenses first since I'd heard they were terribly difficult to get and I didn't want to end up with a camera body I couldn't use. Bought one lens, had to camp the Hasselblad store for months for a chance to buy the other... and then the store didn't send it to me. They put another tracking number into my order, making it look like it'd been fulfilled. Took me two weeks to notice it wasn't my tracking number, and then two months of asking what was going on, before they decided to just cancel my order (costing me hundreds of dollars in currency conversion fees). I'm not about to start camping the store for months again, especially not after it screwed me this bad, so now I can't get into the system and will have to sell the lens I already got at a loss. Awful experience. I strongly recommend not attempting to get into this system, the lenses are too hard to get and their store policies are unacceptable.
With all due respect, there are no sufficient lenses in the market for this camera.. We are unable to shoot with a camera without lenses. Hassi doesn't allow third-parties to make lenses for them, I believe. Leica allows Sigma to produce its lenses for them, more choices for photographers.. In fact, a Japanese company supplies lens materials for Hassi. I would love to purchase this system, but no lenses are available in most stores.. They are all coming SOON, said. BTW, thank you for your video as always..
I guess color is more subjective than other parameters. Those colors shown in the video do nothing to me - I find them way too cool and unemotional Realistic? No -because reality doesn't look "cool" to me. I prefer largely the Fuji colors.
As 'lifestyle' photographers (with 35 years each in hand) Jane and I started out in the digital world with the 1st GFX and we were awed and wowed by the cost vs the results - simply stunning - however a few years down the line we aren't so sure - a but 'fad' ish and washed out and some of the lenses do weird things and not always wanted - the 110 is a'prime example -of this - pun unintentional. So we went all in with 2 X2D's and a little 907x CFV100c as I miss the old days of waist level proper and now we are convinced we made the right choice if it were not for one thing - and that is where Hasselblad have always been a a bit hit and miss - lens lineup. We will stick with them for now but Hass if you are watching, reading and 'listening' and you should; since this is the best channel there is on such matters - you really need to convince not just us that investing in your company and reputation was, is and will still be worth it in years to come!!!!
@@RealCelticGamer Its's horses for courses - and I expect you are right on that score - each camera out there sings a different song for everyone - good luck and I wish you well.
I photographed a concert just the other day with LED lights on my X2D and yes focus struggled at times but a quick press of the rear wheel zooms in to make manual focus a dream. And finally looking at the images on my monitor I once again was blown away. It's the first camera I have had that could control the LED lights. This camera is spectacular.

Sounds like you chose wisely! 😉🖖🏻
Wow, I thought only I saw colour differently in each eye, love how you describe your experiences.
😊🖖🏻
This camera is a step or two what I need, can justify, or can afford. But the real interesting thing I discovered was in checking prices on it and a lens - it is very compatible price wise with buying a Leica M11 and lens. But it does give a professional who does color their Holy Grail - so to speak. We can always dream. Using my Q2 Monochrome just makes me smile even more. We each have our own Holy Grail.
Your Q2M is absolutely smile-inducing! Continue to enjoy!
A lovely contribution - thanks! 😊🖖🏻
Sorry, I have not.
@@3BMEP thanks so much for responding
In the Leica m11 vs X2D comparison for Leica was that standard or natural?
One or the other, I just can’t recall, sorry!
Tested one once and I must say that the auto white balance can’t be fooled, no matter the condition. It gives the best results no matter what you compare it to.
Thanks for weighing in! 🖖🏻😊
Because of you I bought the X2D and the 25mm V lens. Thank you for your review, I trust your opinion. I’m waiting for you to come out to S.F. Silicon Valley CA
Enjoy! 😊🖖🏻
Hi Hugh, do you use any monochrome camera for your mainly black and white photos?
Other than for testing, no.
Thanks, may I know why? I am buying Monochrome camera , but after your reply , maybe not😀
@@johannesbasuki391even though I’m primarily a B&W shooter, I want to retain color channel information to aid editing; and I want to retain the OPTION of rendering in color.

The X2D produces amazing output from everything I’ve seen - and oh, the colours!
So glad you enjoyed it. Thomas. Delighted for you that you can call down east home! 😊🖖🏻
Wow! Those photos were dope! Superb, rich colors.
Glad you like them! 😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
Curious if you used Hasselblad's Phocus software to process your photos.
Hah! Only put off retirement if you won’t know what do with yourself afterward! Otherwise, enjoy what you’ve got! 😊🖖🏻
Second ONLY to Hasselblad, but Leica’s APO Summicron SLs are the best lenses in the industry.
I love my GFX100s ii and my Leica Q3, but the Hasselblad System is just worlds apart I love my 907x50c. I wish it had more speed for travel, but for portraits it is a monster!
An abundance of wonderful choices! 😊🖖🏻
Yikes ! I thought I had bad GAS !
@@mcelliot just a semi-retired tech person haha :)
Very cool - thank YOU!😊 🖖🏻
Thanks for the information as well as the great way in which you articulate your point of view. I love the look of the images on the Hasselblad 2d without all the manipulation, so their color science is extremely important. Again it is not the destination but the road well travelled for the journey.
Well put! 😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
It’s on my list to compare - time always feels tight! 😊🖖🏻
@@3BMEP Phocus Mobile 2 seems to work well on the iPad
In all of the reviews of the X2D I've watched and read, I have somehow missed the part about auto iso not working in manual mode. That ruins the camera for me, as manual aperture/manual shutter/auto iso is my favorite way to shoot. drat. Better to find out now than after purchasing, though.
All it would take is a firmware update…
And that, to me, is the real tragedy. It isn't that the camera can't do it, customers just aren't allowed to. I've gotten burned by the waiting for firmware updates game before, so I'm going to have to hold off or reconsider until that update comes.
Enjoyed the video as always.
😊🖖🏻
Thank you again, for your htoughts.
Tempting, oh so tempting
🤔
😉🖖🏻
Actually maybe not. Just try recreating sony vivd or any other profile on your own. they keep the sauce for themselves.
Honestly can't justify it over the gfx. Better features for a better price. Colors can be adjusted. Also Hassy doesn't have my favorite focal length
Fair enough! 😊🖖🏻
It sounds like you have a cataract in one eye - the one warmer. Easy to fix. Done that twice now.
Oh how interesting! I’ll have to look into it (no pun intended). 🙏🏻🖖🏻
The camera on OnePlus 12 is fantastic waiting for the big lottery win 😅
Great video! What are the names of the artists and music tracks in the video? Great recordings.
Many thanks in advance
Would love to try it one day! But for I am very satisfied with my Z9 and Q3.
As well you should! Great kit! 😊🖖🏻
Well done!
This is a tale of woe indeed. I hope Hasselblad sees this . Thanks for sharing.
For those who don’t have a person in their lives, with whom they can share and loves you back… It’s ok. 😔
An important point. Thank you.
Nice two last sentences!
Glad you like them!
The best perhaps!
Wish they stop giving TH-camrs lenses that they can’t keep production with. Just irritating. Thank you for the video and support for Hassy users
My pleasure! 😊🖖🏻
Thanks Hugh. Another terrific video. One thing I’ve wondered: who are the other two blind men?😂

@@jaekim5397 I understand your frustration with lens choice and availability. I know this is something Hasselblad is addressing. Thanks for sharing.

@11:10 Can you elaborate on how one can get the right color by playing with an image on Instagram? 😂🤣
I guess color is more subjective than other parameters. Those colors shown in the video do nothing to me - I find them way too cool and unemotional Realistic? No -because reality doesn't look "cool" to me. I prefer largely the Fuji colors.
All good! I experience FujiFilm as cooler, but hey: to each his or her own. 😊🖖🏻
Thanks for sharing!
I'm not convinced by the X2D for b&w photography Vs the GFX100 II. I've found that without using film simulations, the GFX has punchier b&w photos.
