  • We began planting our Food Forest in January 2019, it is now 5.5 years old and this year feels like its most productive and abundant so far!
    Self sufficient in fruit, teas and herbal medicines, our Forest Garden is ever evolving and is such a beautiful and inspiring space to spend time 🌳
    We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
    Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-80% self sufficient in our food needs.
    Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
    We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
    It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment... maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

    I love the tours of your food forest. I always see something I want to plant in mine. I have recently planted a couple of broom (cytisus) as support species in my fruit guilds. The pollinators love them. ✌️🌿

      Hey Lynne, So glad you enjoy the tours 🙏 I honestly get so excited making them, it helps me to see the beauty around us even more - im always buzzing by the time we finish 😆 defo would like to add more Support species here - I'm thinking Lupins maybe one of my next additions, I tried the edible ones 2 years in a row, they don't grow strong enough though I feel, so I will try the classic flowering ones, as I really love them too 🌸 Broom is a great idea 💚✌️🌿

    With the bananas you could harvest them for their hearts. Heart of banana doesn't taste of much but is crunchy and can add texture to stir-fries. I've not tried Musa basjoo but have tried Musa sikkimensis and it wasn't bad. Until recently I'd only heard of eating the heart from the youtube channel "All the fruit" but in a relatively recent permaculture magazine article they focus on Musa basjoo and specifically discuss eating the heart. Seeing as they put up pups quite readily the occasional heart harvest might be worthwhile. Just thought I'd mention this in case people hadn't come across it before.

      Hi - Thank you for mentioning this 🙏 it is a very good point/suggestion. It is something we learn about only last year and I said to Dan after we filmed the tour that I had meant to mention that we plan to try eating the banana flowers, I heard of a recipe for making a vegan version of fish, but I am not much one for fiddle recipes, so its defo something I would like to learn more about - I will check out the TH-cam channel you mention. Thanks for watching & for the info 💚✌️🌿

    Thank you so much for the tour. It’s always lovely to see what’s thriving. I’m always excited to see what else I can squeeze into my small space. I really want to focus on herbs and edible flowers (annuals and perennials) over the next two years.

    Wonderful array of plants there. I'm struggling to think of much that i'd add to that, maybe some mini kiwi fruit bushes and some globe artichokes.
    My champagne rhubarb this year has been really slow to get growing - i've only harvested a couple of stems off it for the first time this morning, so something's gone wrong there. Some of the blueberries are turning colour now so won't be long there, and the hinnonmaki red gooseberry is also starting to colour up, so should be a good harvest around the end of the month.
    Good luck with all the apple mint. Hopefully it's the new Bitcoin!

      Hey Tony, Yes Kiwi's is defo something we need to get on to again, we did have a couple of Kiwi Jenny vines in the early days... I can;t actually remember what happened to them though, I did intent to add G.artichokes too this year, seed didn;t come up well and the 2 that did germinate weren;t strong! Better luck next time .. I love them just for their flowers! Grape vines is something I am excited for for the future too, we have 2 spots ear marked around the place eventually, tied in with other projects! Your garden sounds like it is getting going nicely 💚✌️🌿

    Looks like your mulberry would appreciate some fertilizer. That'll speed it up for sure...Pro tip for anyone: most plants if not growing fairly vigorously or are not a fairly deep green could use fertilizer! Most stunted plants will kick into gear with one or a few doses of fertilizer. If they are still not growing, mulch!

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Erik, it did get a really good dose of Mulch from our Hotbed, over winter, no harm in giving it some nettle fertilser or some chicken manure pallets though, so I will get onto that - Thanks for the reminder and thanks for watching ✌️🌿

    Does the tour cover 3 acres or are there parts of the land untouched as yet?

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Peter, we normally do our tours in different ‘areas’ of the land, we have it divided up into different gardens/purposes. This one is just the food forest, which is approx 20 x 30m , we have other vids of our main garden beds and polytunnel tours etc ✌️🌿

    What variety of bananas have you planted?

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Maria, Musa basjoo is the variety, we have pretty good success with, we’ve tried others and they haven’t gone so well 💚✌️🌿
