  • This month has been a Whirlwind - Autumn feels like it has come fast and the harvests have been coming even faster! Ever year brings us more abundance, even when some things go wrong - We truly feel rich living this sustainable life, closer to nature.
    We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
    Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
    Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
    In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest.
    We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
    It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment... maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

    Beautiful drone shots. You've reminded me to plant my garlic and this year I'm going to try elephant garlic.

    Such a beautiful and celebratory video, thank you for cheering up a rainy day in Shropshire with your unique blend of optimism, gratitude and down to earth practical advice. Absolutely LOVE the drone shots too, and everything is looking so beautiful in the autumn sunshine. I was working with a drone operator last week, surveying a flooded river that we couldn't get to on foot. I'm thinking of buying a small one to help with my work as an ecologist, but I can see us having fun with it around the garden, orchard and woodland too!

    Property is looking incredible! Do you have any tips for Garlic Rust? I'm in the Southern Hemisphere, mid Spring and my Garlic is already plagued by Rust :( Early on, I removed all damaged leaves but it has all come back. I'm pretty worried about it

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, this was the first year for us that we have had any significant rust on garlic actually, which I feel was due to it being a particularly wet year! I’ve heard of people growing it undercover in polytunnels or greenhouses though and that significantly reduces rust I believe 💚✌️🌿

    • @joshlovegood9392
      @joshlovegood9392 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@freedomforestlife yes Charles Dowdings undercover garlic is incredible. You don't know of any techniques to stop / reduce rust once it is a problem ? :/

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@joshlovegood9392 it may be a challenge to manage now that it’s set in, and will likely result in much smaller garlic this year, unfort, which I am sure you know - the beauty of nature is that every year is different and we can try again using what we learnt the following year. Rust is an environmental thing I believe and can also be exacerbated when nutrition isn’t great, soils are overfed or poor draining or weakened with chemicals products/ferts. Airflow is also very important - if it’s packed in tight, that’s not going to help - I am going to give my French garlic a little more space this year when I plant this week and see if that helps. I don’t know of anything tried and tested that may remove rust once it’s started - keeping the plants growing and as strong as possible may help though, so perhaps some liquid ferts, like nettle tea 💚 has it been a particularly wet and humid yr for you out of interest?

      @joshlovegood9392 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@freedomforestlife The two factors that I feel may have contributed is that I planted them very early, as I was travelling overseas. And I also spread a decent amount of blood & bone on top of the soil. Perhaps the overload of nitrogen, plus a very wet late winter / early spring ?? It's such a shame as it was looking incredibly healthy 1 month ago. The stalks are already very large, so i'm hoping it will be okay...

    • @joshlovegood9392
      @joshlovegood9392 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One other thing I thought I would add is that half of the bed (close to a large patch of nasturtium) got rust 1 month before the other half. Perhaps excess moisture overnight from the nearby nasturtium?? The difference is only 1m.
