    We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
    Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-80% self sufficient in ALL of our food needs.
    Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
    We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below). Thanks to Huw for the excellent idea of inviting fellow gardeners to request a visit from him. Been watching him since he was a boy, always admired his passion for growing and he has drawn our attention to folk like yourselves with these connections.
    I'll be watching you again for sure. Beautiful garden you're creating down there (I'm in the northeast near Durham).

    Hey!
    Tips on harvesting Amaranth :
    Harvest them while the seeds are brownish, you can squeeze them a bit, and see what color the seeds are, if they are brownish, you can lay them down on a table in the greenhouse, or hang them upside down with a tarp underneath them! So you can catch the seeds,
    Hope this helps!

    Your garden is an inspiration! I live in Oklahoma, USA, 7b, and my tomatoes always get stressed when our day time temps reach the triple digits F. They just don't set fruit in extreme heat here. But, as they cool to the mid 90's F, they begin to set fruit again and I get a good early Fall harvest. When the first frost is coming, I cut the stems with green fruit and hang them in our garage where most of the fruit will eventually turn red and the leaves will leave a mess.

    I cover my corn with little netbags when the tops start getting brown, else the birds have a party. Okka looks great. have to try that to.

      Thanks, yes I think we may have to look at options like covers in tge future, even if just for part of the crops as a safe guard! 2 vid links below showing a little more on Oca - thanks for watching 💚✌️🌿

    My sungold tomatoes have also thankfully been a saviour again this year as a number of the other varieties have struggled (more down to my mismanagement than the weather). Whilst i'm looking to grow a few more heirloom varieties for the fantastic colour, taste and texture, i'll continue to grow a load of the old reliables, that i know will crop well each year regardless of the conditions/weather.
    PS - a brief update for you on the Purple Cherokee....grown outdoors this season, plants started off really strongly, but grew to no more than about 3 feet, produced about ~6 medium sized fruit per plant, first few i harvested (difficult to tell when ripe) were tasteless but then the later fruit began to produce a lovely flavour, and the texture is also something that for me that makes this tomato. I will grow some again next year, but will be reclaiming some of the space for some new varieties to me....probably Alice's Dream and Lucid Gem or Berkeley Tie Dye.

      Hi Tony, Yes I feel my tomatoes could defo of been better managed this year too ... changing are routine to fit more with what the weather is doing is the big learning for me this year in the polytunnel I feel. I will still grow sungold next year as they are indeed a great reliable tomato, otherwise I am going to have a big mix up and try lots of different heritage varieties next year and then maybe i;ll look to get new seed for Cherokee in a couple of years time and go back to them then, as they were soooo good for the first 2-3 yrs. Lovely hearing your updates Tony - Thank you 💚✌️🌿

    Depending on your overnight temps, your tomatoes might take a pause on growing for a while. At least that’s what happens here in zone 9a where summer overnight temps can get above 78! They come back in the fall if I cut them back about 1/3 in the heat of summer. Shade cloth, mulch, or living mulch can help to keep the roots cool and retain water.
    Also, I let the amaranth heads dry in a bag to save the seeds if that helps!

      Hi, thanks for the tips - very useful. Defo going to be trying a few diferent methods with the toms next season. The cutting back trick is interesting and not something i've heard before. We are also in zone 9a, I think that more refers to our coldest temp, rather than our warmest, so I am wondering if your overall growing season may be longer than ours? I would defo try this though. 👍 Appreciate you watching and commenting. Happy gardening ✌️🌿

    We had a 'rotten' tomato harvest last year. Total failure. This year we put rotted manure in the base of our buckets in the polytunnel, topped up with 'Evergreen' compost (the best compost we have found) and fed with homemade comfrey feed weekly throughout.
    August. Watered every day during the very hot period and every 48 hours under 22°c.
    It just worked!
    Manure, compost, comfrey (the biggy) seems key plus regular watering.
    From just 5 beefsteak tomato vines, we've harvested 30 massive tomatoes and still producing. Plus a huge harvest of salad tomatoes.

      @freedomforestlife  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is great info Pauline- thanks for sharing 🙏 I defo feel ours has been down to heat stress/watering this year- my plan is actually to grow less next year, to make good care/watering more achievable and easier. I have also used comfrey in the past, decided not to this year mainly as we are now on our own homemade compost which I felt should be a lot more nutritious than the municipal waste stuff we’ve used in the past, so will maybe rethink this next year too. Especially if weather patterns continue to be so erratic! Thanks for watching/commenting 💚✌️🌿

      Thanks, I'm well and the season has been very intense! That's why I've been rather quiet here 😊 I'm about to move to a new place with a new garden. My small container garden is transforming into a garden of over 1000 m2! The place is an ashram where I'm going to live, and where I will be managing the garden. I'm super exited that I get the chance to create something like a „Mini Freedom Forest“ there. Your inspirations help a lot, and I'm so thankful to have found your channel about 2 years ago (thanks to Huw, by the way 😉) 👨‍🌾💚🌿

      @@pandhari108 I am so happy for you 💚 Wow you are going to have LOTS of space to get creative with. I'll look forward to hearing how it all progresses over time. So happy that we have helped to inspire you. We appreciate you being with us and thank you so much also for joining us monthly now on patreon too 🙏 I was hoping the Artemisia Annua had self seeded in our food forest from last year, but I didn't spot any popping up where I thought it would be, so I will grow more from seed again next year, its a really lovely herb ... Luckily I still have some that I tinctured and a little dried left for teas (which I very much enjoy the taste of actually). Thank you for introducing me to this plant. Did I read your message correctly - so did you originally find our channel through Huw 2 years ago? ✌🌿

    • @pandhari108

      @@freedomforestlife Yes, well I hope I'm remembering correctly, but I could swear Huw recommended your channel along with some other channels in one of his videos a while back. I think, he also mentioned the channel of David The Good in that video... But unfortunately I can't remember which video that was 😅
      I had no luck growing Artemisia annua this year either. So, good luck for next year🍀👍🌿

      @@pandhari108 Yes, we are mentioned in 'the self sufficiency garden' book, pretty sure you've been with us for longer than that though 😊 Which is why I was wondering if there was a video somewhere along the line that I had missed where he mentioned us. He's really such a lovely guy, its been so inspiring connecting with him in person 💚All the best with your move. ✌🌿

    Have you thought about covering your sweetcorn cobs. Some people use socks or you could use a mesh bag like supermarkets have to put fruit or veg in. It just might stop the squirrels

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks Jacque, yes we may have to try something in the future … we would need a lot of socks though for how much we normally grow - safeguarding at least some of the crop would defo be better doable and better than loosing it all for sure ! Every year is different too, there seems to be more squirrels around this year than in the past, all just part of the natural cycles im sure - maybe we’ll be lucky with more sweet potatoes this year 🍠 thanks for watching and fir your thoughtful comment/suggestion 🙏✌️🌿
