I was one of the lucky people who had the opportunity to be live at this concert. It will remain deep in my hearth as one of the most beautiful concert (not only because of this song) I ever was. Thank you Voces 8
I live in a small town in Minnesota, USA, which is known mostly for NOT being the city with the same name in New York. When we heard that Voces8 was coming to a neighboring town, it was sort of like hearing that The Beatles were going to play the local VFW. Amazing concert, ranks with being at a workshop with John Rutter 20-odd years ago as notches on my bucket list.
I was already on shock but goosebumps killed me at 2:00 when they started raising voices. I wish I could have such a music group in my town, to enjoy them all the time
Very beautiful. Thank you very much for this Moment. I' know many versions of " Bogoroditse Devo " because I'm a russian orthodox Christian. Well done!
Rejoice, virgin Mother of God, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you have borne the Savior of our souls. [translation: Barry Johnston]

My singular criticism (as it is beautiful and wonderful) of this is that Russian liturgical singing never takes a full pause. Seriously, go to an Orthodox church in any city in Russia. The tone does not end until the song does. And to be fair, it might be impossible with just 8 voices, but this arrangement is for 6 voices, and the Voices 8 have talented singers who easily span 3 voice parts each in the standard 8-part scale. I don't feel they did this justice with their talent.
@@JonYuill that's a prickish thing to say. He is absolutely right. They're singing Russian choral music like they're an Anglican Boychoir. Besides, this is YT bro. We're allowed to say what we want. I guess until it pisses you off and then you want to exercise your right to be pissed off. Get over it.
A tone down? (Russian church pitch around 1900 was actually even higher than 440) Still very nicely done - though the bass sound is cranked up too much to my taste
really?! I couldnt disagree more. There was barely any bass. When singing Russian I always like to hear the basses roar over the rest of the choir at the zenith of certain phrases. Not many pieces in the repertory give that kind of presence to the bass section. Russian music--they love their basses.
For a person who used to listen to Orthodox liturgies often, and raised where they're performed naturally, this performance looks "distant". No doubt they have exceptional voices, but unfortunately they didn't catch the manner how it should be performed according the Rachmaninoff's idea (or the Orthodoxy tradition, in general).
This is interesting to know! I would like to learn how it should be performed according to Rachmaninoff's idea. I am a student and I would really appreciate it if you could share it. Thank you.
Extraordinary, as always... would be great if the alto gentleman in the middle could keep still while he’s singing... super-distracting in many of these videos... LOVE Y’ALL SO MUCH!
what a yawn. They're singing the glorious music of the Orthodox Church like an Anglican boychoir. smh what is the point of singing this music if you sing every other kind of music in the exact same way. For the gods I get tired of hearing these kinds of choirs.
I definitely don't like the lower key and the almost 'pop-ish' style of presentation. This is still good singing...just a not so good interpretation and delivery.
@@jReactor he's referring to their use of straight tone which is sadly fully in fashion as it's easier to blend a straight tone then to do the hard work of exploring the complete tonal range from straight-tone to a sound comparable to the Eastern Orthodox music. American choirs for whatever reason think that this St Olaf-style of singing is best. Which is why St Olav sounds like Westminster which sounds like Luther which sounds like BYU which sounds like the Mormon Tabernacle...you get the idea lol. it's a total yawn. This wasnt always the case. Look up any actual Russian or Orthodox choir and you will instantly hear the difference. Night and Day. Here is an example of a choir that uses the full range of tone capable in a human voice. They do it all and can sing it all: th-cam.com/video/1VdyIB1_g_s/w-d-xo.html Every piece sounds appropriate to the period. When they need a full huge sound they got it. Because they don’t sing what they are singing. No interpretation, the meaning of the pray? Sorry, but they are only sing the sheet music, not the Pray.

Eight voices creating such an extraordinary sound. Brilliant!
If more people sang in small groups like this, the world would be better. Brilliantly beautiful!

@@davidhoadley39 Delightful comparison! It made me laugh and is so true!
I have sung this many times as a bass in a larger mixed voice choir, gives me goosebumps every time.

That ending is simply perfect. The bass really balanced.
The bass was perfect - subtle!

God bless.
Merci Voces8
The harmony produced by these young men and women is breathtaking! God bless VOCES8 ❣️
An absolutely sublime, beautifully balanced performance. Thank you.
The heart just melts ... what a great piece of music and outstanding performance by Voces8 - hard to top this! Thanks for the upload
To show someone what goose bumps is, are you my universal tool. Love you all and what you are doing. Greetings from Germany !
Thank you for sharing this beautiful music. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this group. Connie
My favorite Hymn No. 6, Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil, to sing. I have performed it 3 times and loved doing it each time.
(Gladsome Light & Nunc dimittis)?

Wow such a great sound and there is only eight of you
Absolutely nice. So brillant voices.
it's really gorgeous, mostly I listen to Bach but for this brilliant piece of music I gladly make a exception..

Superb!
Muy bonito!!!!
Maravillosas voces 🌷🌳🌷
Heard this live in 2017. Could have died happily after that.
It is impossible for even this sublime group to sing Russian Orthodox music with the beauty and solemnity that Russian choirs have
Respect. You have to be able to sing it with eight people.
Increíble !
This is so beautiful.

Just wow! WOW!
I don't know who is singing the alto one part but it's just beautiful

Fabulous!
il miracolo della voce!
Exquisite sound.
Beautiful! really beautiful. Question : 3 Labour and 3 Conservative 😉?
Perfect.
Okay I love it but I wonder why they sang it a whole stop lower than it's written?
Excellent!
The basses are so deep
gorgeous

Sounds .... different. This is in E flat I think.
Agreed
Interestingly, the official version for the male chorus counterpart of Rachmaninoff's Bogoroditse Devo published by Musica Russica is in Eb major!

This piece is simply designed for a larger choir, which will allow for stagger breathing. All things considered, this is a lovely piece
