Regardless of which game is “better”, MGS is the most important game. It laid the foundation for literally every single player narrative game that followed on every console generation. Competent voice acting paired with a cinematic delivery was virtually unheard of before that game. All of the best single player experiences we got in the last few generations owe everything to MGS setting the benchmark and showing devs how to do it right.

Simmons with the Suikoden 2 add was great to see. It was never going to stick in the Top-10 for this group, but it’s one of the top JRPG’s of all-time for those who’ve played it.
We know. Max lost interest in the series after playing Suikoden 1. Thats why he has no interest in playing the remasters either. Shame cause Suikoden 2 is the good one. Suikoden 1 is only ok as Max would say. Hope he will reconsider one day cause he misses out on one the best JRPG's ever made. Easily outshines FFVII but thats just my opinion ofcourse.

Arguing against Gran Turismo 2 as a top 5 (or even top 3) game of the PS1 is mind boggling to me. Racing sims or semi-sims were just not a thing back then and while GT1 was the building blocks and sort of the pioneer, GT2 was so much more and incredibly monumental. It established a game were car culture was a thing, pushed the hardware to its absolute limits, was graphically impressive, progression system was A+ with the licensing, handling and physics felt nice, detailed customization, defined a genre. Saying: "it's not fun when it's a driving game" is not understanding the impact it had. PS: I would also argue Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is a top 5 game in the system as well. Replayability off the charts, incredibly expressive and smooth to play even today. Soundtrack was fire and was just a kickass videogame.
Something I've always hated about hardcore gamers (and I am a huge gamer myself) is that they think they're TOO GOOD for certain genres. How normies shit on JRPGs or fighting games all the time, they do the same to things like sports games and more serious racers like Gran Turismo. "It's not fun!" is horseshit. I don't find JRPGs fun but if I said "FF7 shouldn't be here because it's not fun" I would get murdered.

It's literally the same argument people use to say "you just mash in fighting games." You don't just mash, that's a fundamental misunderstanding from the start. If you don't understand that part then you wont understand what makes the game fun for years in the future. You wouldn't call Tekken 3 the same game as SC2 in the same way you wouldn't say GT2 is like any other racing game. The race tracks are iconic, the music is iconic, the progression is iconic, the presentation is iconic, the gameplay is iconic. GT1 defined what a racing game could be and GT2 perfected that to the capability of the technology at the time. To this day franchises are still trying to recapture the magic of the early GT games, including GT itself.

People love to drive cars, and GT gave people the opportunity to experience cars they would never ever dream of driving. Arguably GT3 is the definitive game of the series but GT2 I would say is #2 and legit top 10, heck maybe top 5 PS1 games of all time.

The Tomb Raider slander is uncalled for. Those games are still good today! They are puzzle platformers. Lara has movement options and the levels are designed around those movement options. It’s methodical and it’s pretty zen if you meet the game where it is. I love those games. I really enjoyed the remastered collection early this year.
Those games are ass, and they always were, their popularity was because of Lara's tits. The moment the kids who jerk-off to Lara grew up, the franchise died.

Im with Kenny on Tomb Raider. Its outdated now, but it wasnt bad especially if you like puzzle platformers. It was good beyond the hot character, which has always been controversial
Some people hate the way Tomb Raider controls and hate the combat but i don't know... it's a unique thing and that's cool, every Mario game controls like Mario 64 which is a testiment to just how insanely well they nailed it first try but nothing else plays like Tomb Raider, and while that's not everyone's cup of tea it did have millions of fans, it's certainly a Marmite thing now but back then it was new and fresh. I remember being in school and at the school gates all the mums were talking about how their husbands were all playing Tomb Raider.
My only issue is the control. Unlike RE, the fixed camera and tank work. TR with the 3D environment with tank is a bit off. This is why something like Anniversary imo played better.

Trying to be non-biased I think I'd probably make the list something like: 1. Final Fantasy VII 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Gran Turismo 2 4. Castlevania Symphony of the Night 5. Resident Evil 2 6. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 7. Tekken 3 8. Crash Team Racing 9. Tomb Raider 2 10. Spyro Top 2 games are a big deal for pushing the cinematic games as mentioned. GT was the biggest Sony IP at the time. Metroidvania and 2D sticking around makes SOTN extremely important. Resident Evil still alive and kicking and RE2 really started the push to move the genre as a mix between horror and action imo. Tony Hawk spawned a pretty massive fad and they are some of the highest rated games of the era for a reason. Tekken 3 maxes out the system very well and highly rated. Crash and Croft were huge back then. Spyro important, as well.

Parasite eve probably has one of my fave rpg protagonists... period. Aya Brea is just So cool and awesome. SURE Lara is cool.. but AYA was on another freaking level. Female Protagonist Police officer protagonist that ACTUALLY acts like a Cop ACTUALLY reacts reasonably to all the things going on.. I mean she has a break down, Which is perfectly reasonable. The combat was also fun with the great tunes.. I liked running around dodging attacks and then blasting with my pistol
Megaman Legends was sick-once you get used to the controls. Also, Silent Hill and Tenchu Stealth Assassins were bangers as well (don't know if top ten, but def my top ten). And of course, FF7 was mind-blowing for its time.

Truth to be told. I personally think that I can't even make a proper top 50 game list for the system without feeling that I am leaving some gems out of it. PS1 library is monstruos. Such a good console.

My top ten in no particular order is Gran Turismo 2, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Dance Dance Revolution (any), Beatmania (any), Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Point Blank (any), Soul Blade/Edge. It was very funny watching Simmons and Steeb whine about Gran Turismo because "it's not fun"(you can't just dismiss a game because you don't like the GENRE) and "it's grindy"(YOU PUT A JRPG AS NUMBER ONE)

It blows my mind Mega Man Legends 1 or 2 didn't at least get a mention, that game aged the best in terms of visuals something even Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy VII couldn't do (as well beloved as they are) plus it was a great new direction for Mega Man being an adventure game with such a rich world building, charming characters, good mechanics taken from the Mega Man games before while also creating something new for the adventure genre & sad there was nothing like it but at least Abyss X Zero will carry on the legacy of what Mega Man Legends set out to do in visuals but also being a 3D Metroidvania, which I'm looking forward to it! Also I figured Xenogears wasn't gonna be mentioned since Simmons hated it but hey I will still stand it's one of the best PS1 games especially when it alongside Xenosaga evolved to eventually give us Xenoblade plus if you ask me, it's impressive that before monolith soft existed, they were under strict deadlines yet still made one of the best PS1 games cause that happened again with Xenoblade 2 which is one of the best Switch games at least if you ask me, they were denied to finish the story in the past 25 years but I'm happy Monolith Soft won in the end thanks to Xenoblade 3, I will look forward to where Xenoblade will go now that the chapter of Xenogears Perfect Works has been finally finished
19:50 man....i swear Parasite eve was one of THE best JRPGs of all time because it sorta a beta FF7 before that game became FF7 The gameplay mechanics were so interesting at time and the rest of the OST being main theme but remixed like 10x over and still kept getting better at each segment and chapter of the game, that game made me want to buy a PS1 back then because of cool and interesting it was and seeing getting easily crossed out made me so fucking mad 😂😂😂
I feel like Breath of Fire 3 deserves a spot, if not in the top 10, top 15 at least. Although I did enjoy BoF4 slightly more, I will admit that 3 is a classic in every sense of the word and probably the best in the series.

Honestly, Squaresoft could easily dominate any PS1 top 10 list. As much as I love the Snes era Square, PS1 was their golden age.

The Tomb Raider slander is uncalled for. Those games are still good today! They are puzzle platformers. Lara has movement options and the levels are designed around those movement options. It’s methodical and it’s pretty zen if you meet the game where it is. I love those games. I really enjoyed the remastered collection early this year.
Those games are ass, and they always were, their popularity was because of Lara's tits.

Im with Kenny on Tomb Raider. Its outdated now, but it wasnt bad especially if you like puzzle platformers. It was good beyond the hot character, which has always been controversial
To be honest, given it's level design, tank controls was a better choice.
Some people hate the way Tomb Raider controls and hate the combat but i don't know... it's a unique thing and that's cool, every Mario game controls like Mario 64 which is a testiment to just how insanely well they nailed it first try but nothing else plays like Tomb Raider, and while that's not everyone's cup of tea it did have millions of fans, it's certainly a Marmite thing now but back then it was new and fresh.
I remember being in school and at the school gates all the mums were talking about how their husbands were all playing Tomb Raider.
My only issue is the control. Unlike RE, the fixed camera and tank work. TR with the 3D environment with tank is a bit off. This is why something like Anniversary imo played better.

I describe the controls of original TR as a simulator, if Legend is Forza then TR1 is iRacing.

Top 2 games are a big deal for pushing the cinematic games as mentioned. GT was the biggest Sony IP at the time. Metroidvania and 2D sticking around makes SOTN extremely important. Resident Evil still alive and kicking and RE2 really started the push to move the genre as a mix between horror and action imo. Tony Hawk spawned a pretty massive fad and they are some of the highest rated games of the era for a reason. Tekken 3 maxes out the system very well and highly rated. Crash and Croft were huge back then. Spyro important, as well.

Parasite eve probably has one of my fave rpg protagonists... period. Aya Brea is just So cool and awesome. SURE Lara is cool.. but AYA was on another freaking level.

Megaman Legends was sick-once you get used to the controls. Also, Silent Hill and Tenchu Stealth Assassins were bangers as well (don't know if top ten, but def my top ten). And of course, FF7 was mind-blowing for its time.

I played megaman legends on Nintendo 64 and the clunkiness was crazy, compared to what all the megaman games had established before.

It was very funny watching Simmons and Steeb whine about Gran Turismo because "it's not fun"(you can't just dismiss a game because you don't like the GENRE) and "it's grindy"(YOU PUT A JRPG AS NUMBER ONE)

Not having tomb raider on a top 10 playstation list is insane. She was an absolute icon of the playstation era. I think people have forgotten how massive tomb raider was.

It blows my mind Mega Man Legends 1 or 2 didn't at least get a mention, that game aged the best in terms of visuals something even Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy VII couldn't do (as well beloved as they are) plus it was a great new direction for Mega Man being an adventure game with such a rich world building, charming characters, good mechanics taken from the Mega Man games before while also creating something new for the adventure genre & sad there was nothing like it but at least Abyss X Zero will carry on the legacy of what Mega Man Legends set out to do in visuals but also being a 3D Metroidvania, which I'm looking forward to it! Also I figured Xenogears wasn't gonna be mentioned since Simmons hated it but hey I will still stand it's one of the best PS1 games especially when it alongside Xenosaga evolved to eventually give us Xenoblade plus if you ask me, it's impressive that before monolith soft existed, they were under strict deadlines yet still made one of the best PS1 games cause that happened again with Xenoblade 2 which is one of the best Switch games at least if you ask me, they were denied to finish the story in the past 25 years but I'm happy Monolith Soft won in the end thanks to Xenoblade 3, I will look forward to where Xenoblade will go now that the chapter of Xenogears Perfect Works has been finally finished

Parasite eve was one of THE best JRPGs of all time because it sorta a beta FF7 before that game became FF7
The gameplay mechanics were so interesting at time and the rest of the OST being main theme but remixed like 10x over and still kept getting better at each segment and chapter of the game, that game made me want to buy a PS1 back then because of cool and interesting it was and seeing getting easily crossed out made me so fucking mad 😂😂😂

I feel like Breath of Fire 3 deserves a spot, if not in the top 10, top 15 at least. Although I did enjoy BoF4 slightly more, I will admit that 3 is a classic in every sense of the word and probably the best in the series.
