Just ordered mine. Should be here next Wednesday. I went with the 42" deck. I just wanted one with 2 blades, not three. Two blades puts less stress on the engine and that's one less blade I have to remove to sharpen.
I went with the same mower to get that engine.I trust Kawasaki and hope that I can get 20 years at 20 hours a year,(200 hours total) with no problems.We got a JD 15 gallon weed sprayer on the back hitch.The whole set up was about 5 grand with the 48 inch deck.I'll report back in 20 years when I'm in the old folks home.
It has the K46 transaxle- which is the same as the lower X300 series but there is a heavier transaxle for the upper X300s- not sure what models have the heavier transaxle- the s100 series uses a lighter transaxle
I think the s240 with the 48” deck would handle 3 1/2 acres- years ago I had a 1972 John Deere 110 with a 10 hp Koehler and a 42” deck that mowed about 2 1/2 acres- and it did a great job
I mow and maintain 4 acres with an S240, 48" deck. Takes about an hour per acre. I have jumped out the RIO switch (simple jumper that can be removed to put back to factory) but not the seat switch. After a year I am happy with the machine. I did add a ball hitch as well to allow towing my 5'x10' trailer when cutting large limbs and carting to a burn pile. Also bought a dump cart for utility purposes. Not a JD (cost) but found at Amazon. Changed the headlights to LED for a couple of bucks. Summers are long light here in NW Indiana but during winter, gets dark early.

When you lift the hood of your John Deere s240 does it rub if you notice on the front there is white residue from it rubbing
I really like my S240 also. I have now had mine for 2 years and it still runs and cuts great.
