Even though it is not made traditionally (realllllly hard to do and requires 7 people for 7 different jobs) you made the sword elegant and beautiful by itself
Thank you for understanding! Not to mention the time! It may not be traditional, but most modern knives and swords are made by stock removal instead of forging.

It also takes days almost 2 weeks to get a really good traditionally made sword like that. Pretty good even if it's not traditional
1095 High carbon steel was the closest we can get for Traditional Katana with modern Steel. Traditional Katanas have around 0.8%-1% Carbon content with 0.01% manganese, approximately the same as 1095 steel. I think a full 1095 was even better than combining 2 types of steel like the real katana, because it will homogeneously spread the carbon throughout the blade.

1095 steel is suitable for a short blade, but when it comes to the sword, it's basically not worth 5 money. If you are going to make a katana, you need to make it from magnetic black sand steel and not with the maru style as you did, but at least with the variha tetsu style and cover it with clay to quench the steel. the holder horn of the scabbard was also not made.Anyone can cut the dry tatami mat, all you have to do is cut the wet tatami mat.

Thanks Steve! I'm actually older than you think...I'm 33! As for the blade, I've been trying to make more historically accurate Katanas (with a good amount of profile taper and distal taper). It's a little over one inch wide at the base and a little under an inch at the tip. The blade is about 28 inches long. The handle is almost exactly 12 inches.

katanas are 103 cm long, 73 are bladed and the rest are handles and pieces width are about 2.3 cm

Hello, not to be that guy. But instead of just using marker on the hilt parts. Try using acid etching. All it requires is ferric chloride, nail polish and a glass dish. Thats what i use and get some great results.
I have been meaning to try acid etching for some time now, I will definitely give it a try on future projects

Pretty nice work, I would suggest you look into heat treating the sword. One heat and one quench like you did could make the sword too brittle.
