A year after I graduated from high school I came home to visit my parents and our next door neighbors came over I had known them for years and grew up with their beautiful daughter who was a year younger than me they said she didn’t get asked to her prom because all the guys thought she had a date or were afraid to ask her I was a sports star when I was in high school and I got the hint from her parents and asked her if I could go with her and be her date she said yes her mom had already bought her a dress or I think she borrowed one from someone she knew I had a hard time finding a tux I’m 6’5” and I think I weighed 230 at the time I don’t know how they did it but but between our parents they found a tux for me to wear her name was Sue Evans I’m 66 now and cherish that memory

Like so many people here, I was so impressed that the Rock took time to call Katie, much more heartwarming, renting out the theatre for her friends. God be with them both!
I was also rejected after being accepted. It hurts for a while. Then it fads away. Bravo Dwayne.
I never was asked, I’m way too tall, 6 feet and no guy would want to dance with a girl taller than them.
I was never asked either, so I just spent the evening with my horses giving them lots of fuss and attention!

The Rock is not just cool, he is very smart too. A nice guy who is a great role model for all of us.
My prom experience was unusual in that I found out that a female classmate with whom I had been at serious loggerheads in campus politics had not been invited even though she was a high profile person on campus. I had just broken up with someone, so I was myself without a date. So I decided to ask her to the prom and, lo and behold, I had suddenly made fast friends out of a former political enemy. Wow. Haven’t seen her for over 50 years, but I do remember her smile when I picked her up for the prom that night!

I was rejected 1 week before prom. My best male friend stepped in and took me. The look on the face of the boy who rejected me was priceless. I partied hard all night right in his face😊

So happy for Katie. I am 68 years old. I wasn’t popular in high school - understatement. I worked my way through high school at a restaurant directly across from our school. We had a large family and working was my way of getting some of the things I wanted. My parents did what they could but instilled within us a strong work ethic which has helped me to this day. No one asked me to the prom and in my mind you didn’t go by yourself - it was a different era. I worked the evening of the prom and watched everyone go into the prom while I worked. My life is good but this has been a great regret of my life.

I wasn't allowed to go to prom. Because I was homeschooled from 2nd grade til 6th (I have epilepsy and was losing vision with each seizure), I had to be tested and placed in the appropriate grade. I was asked not to go to homecoming or prom because it was "not visibly appropriate " for a 14 year old to be participating, even though I was a senior and both my older brothers were OK to go with me (eldest was 18, other 16, and two of us were graduating).

The Rock School announcement was some days after he was asked to go to the prom with her. The Rock had his agent find a local theater and rent it out first after talking with the HS Principal about his plan - along with sending a copy of the movie to the theater so the theater could show it for the special showing. That took a few days. The announcement was pre-recorded and sent to the Principal via email so he could play it on the school announcement system. The principal let all the teachers know about it up front that morning as well so they could provide instructions to the students in their classes. It was not a phone call at the time.
She did become the most popular young lady at school for about a week or so; and became well known for the rest of her senior year.

A local news station also did a followup story at the movie theater which was packed with students.

Actually, all local theaters will do special screenings of any available movie if someone is willing to pay for it (and toss in popcorn, candy, and drinks if someone will pay for that as well). In this case it took the Rock's personal involvement because the movie had not yet been released in the theaters which heightened how special this was (a special pre-release screening).
When I was in High School (1970's) the Biology teacher saw The Hellstrom Chronicle movie when visiting Chicago over the holidays that so impressed him that he arranged for the local theater to show it during the day to all biology and other science students in the school (The school rented the theater and paid the movie rental cost - and bussed us to and from the theater). No popcorn or drinks though. The Hellstrom Chronicle won the 1972 Academy Award (Oscar) for best documentary which helped convince the School Board to fund the movie and interrupt normal classes.
The movie theater ran the movie for over a week in the evenings as the kids dragged their parents and older/younger siblings to the movie. Normal weeknights were fairly slow for the movie theater - not that week.
The owner of the movie theater was extremely cooperative and happy with the results.
There was a theater in Madison WI when I was in college that always rented and ran older or foreign movies that who's normal commercial distribution ended years (if not decades) prior to then. The Movie Companies will gladly rent out the film or now the digital disk of any of there past movies.

Too bad those students couldn't have treated her like a human being before they heard the rock speak. Bet they all showed up at the movie! Would they have treated her differently had she not heard from the rock?
How did they not treat her like a human being? Because one of the football players already had a date and wouldn't dump her for Katie, that's not treating her like a human being? I didn't really see anything in the video that showed her classmates were mean to her before hearing from the Rock. And my question is, because she couldn't get a star on the football team, was there no other guys in her school she could have asked? How about all the boys who didn't go to prom because they couldn't get a date? Girl can't get date because the guy she wanted was on the football team and he was already taken? Tragedy. Boy can't get a date because all the girls are holding out for a star on the football team, who cares?
