I love that throughout the entire show Michael takes every opportunity he has to call for attention, and when he's leaving, when he could have made a big deal and a huge dramatic exit, he tries to go out without anyone even knowing

Yupp. It was Steve's idea to show Michael's journey. Started off as a guy who just wanted attention and when he left...he left quietly 😢😢

Because he's a changed man. He's accepted, he's loved, he's happy. That's all he even wanted and needed. Even when he was dating that married woman, michael was so happy he wasn't at all interested when Pam said he wanted to talk to Michael about her and Jim's sexnlife problems, and that was with someone who's not even close to being a perfect match as holly. Holly accepted him for everything that he was, especially the often cringy jokes, and even likes them and do them herself.

You know Holly completed him the moment he didn't need attention. Attention seekers tend to have a void inside their heart and I know that because I was one too. Holly was one of those who completed him, making Michael's character grow exponentially.

My very favorite thing about this episode is that in his sadness Micheal almost decides to stay, then Holly calls..and talking to Holly for a minute reminds Michael not what he is losing but what he is gaining moving to Colorado with Holly. He will miss his friends but she is his family now...
The one time Micheal need to be wise and brave, and he followed through beautifully.

Having Dwight slowly get silent realizing 1, that he wasn't going to make it through it, and 2, that it was very personal was such an excellent choice. Sort of like not revealing the tea cup letter. It's small things that add up to make these characters feel so much like real people.

So Jim’s character really could be sad. Michael could be annoying, but also funny and supplied a ton of great stories to relay about his antics. Lots of years spent together even if it wasn’t enjoyable the entire time. Jim is smooth for sure though haha

When Michael takes off his lav mic at the airport and Pam sees/chases him down, we can no longer hear anything going on, but we see them speak and embrace and it’s so real… just like when no one came to her art show and he showed up at the end and made her feel validated without even knowing how. The Office (US) began as a show with uncomfortable, cringey humor, but it has endured for years after it ended bc everyone who worked on that show from the writer’s room to the crew to the onscreen talent knew exactly how to capture emotional resonance.

Its so sad and special that Jim was the only one who clever enough to understand Michael was actually leaving that day.....

Maybe I'm very emotional, but I cried for 40 minutes straight after watching this moment. This situation reminds me of how I'm struggling in my life, with no one to talk to and no one with whom I can express my thoughts. Thank you, Michael; after seeing this scenario, I cried my heart out and am now feeling much better.

In the earlier seasons, Jim was a really bad friend to Michael. He and Pam always played with his feelings and used him. But in the end, Jim and almost everyone else realizes how Michael was one of the best things that’s ever happened to them. Michael was annoying af most of the time and always messed around. But what can you expect from a man child who had a terrible childhood and just wants to fit in and have attention. Some of the workers would’ve been fired if anyone else was the boss seeing how some of them acted or the things they did. But they were lucky since Michael views them as friends and not coworkers. I’m glad Jim and Pam and some of the others realized how much they actually liked Michael. Especially how Jim tells Michael he was the best boss he ever had with red and almost teary eyes.

I always loved the running theme that Jim was sort of always in Michaels corner and understood him really well- all through the series the two have a lot of little intimate moments where they talk, like on the booze cruise, when Jim was boss for a day, when Michael rebounded with the waitress, so many little moments like that, they had a very unique, close relationship on the show, and this final scene felt like a homage to Jim always understanding Michael and having a fondness for him, their last little scene like that together. Even in this episode the entire time you can see Jim realizing what Michael is doing, because he gets him, they’ve just always really gotten each other. I feel like no one talks a lot about their relationship, it was so charming and special.

This show still pulls at the few heartstrings I’ve managed to save.

I have always considered myself to be dead inside when it came to movies, shows and games, but somehow The Office managed to break me multiple times and this scene was especially tear-jerking. Fascinating how a comedy show is able to do that.

Not only is impressive how Michael (who for most of the show, especially early on, wanted to have everyone's attention), wanted to leave as quiet as possible
but that he mostly kept it a secret, considering how badly he kept secrets in the show (saying them almost 5 seconds after being told about them)

I still cry every time I watch this. This was Steve's final scene, and the tears in both their eyes was genuine.

This was great. Jim always genuinely cared for and about Michael and would try his best to help him through his faux pas and other mistakes even after pranking him.

Those eyes are red from real tears. The only acting they had to do was say the lines, those emotions are genuine.

I have watched reruns of The Office for years. Having retired this year, this episode really hit me hard when I watched it today again on TV.
