Yamaha MT-07 review

  • Yamaha's MT-07 sporty naked roadster just so happens to be LAMS approved. It's got the looks, it's got the style and the performance is surprisingly fun at the higher end of its category. We went to the Australian press launch to check it out.
    You can read an excerpt of the full test below, or you can read the full MT-07 test and more on our website www.cycletorque.com.au
    FULL TEST by Nigel Paterson
    I’VE long been a fan of big bikes producing big horsepower, but just lately I’ve been surprised just how much fun I’ve been having on smaller, lighter machines - most of them LAMS approved. Yamaha’s new MT-07 is one of this new breed, joining the Ducati 659 Monster and Triumph Street Triple 660.
    Interestingly, all three of those models are modified versions of middleweights which weren’t originally designed for Australian Learner laws, each machine requiring its factory to reduce the capacity a little to get them under the 660cc LAMS capacity limit.
    Despite this, all three are great fun, sharing important characteristics like great steering, quality suspension, a willing engine and naked good looks.
    Yamaha’s come a little late to the party, but its entry is very impressive.
    Class leading
    With more torque, the best power to weight ratio and priced quite a bit below its European competitors, the MT-07 is a very attractive package.
    Its DOHC cross-plane parallel twin features a 270-degree crank, something Aussies fell in love with back in the nineties when the spiritual predecessor to this machine, the TRX850, was introduced. The TRX was a huge success in Australia, the half-faired lightweight economic cafe racer selling in droves, and they still command quite ridiculous prices considering how old they are.
    The TRX was a success because it looked good and was a delight to ride because it was light and fun. The MT-07 has inherited those attributes, although its style is in keeping with the modern MT (Massive Torque) range.
    A bit of history
    Yamaha’s MT range started with the MT-01, a radically-styled naked powered by a 1700cc V-Twin which we’d first seen in a cruiser. It wouldn’t have been politically correct to call the bike Massive Wheelie, but that’s what it was capable of.
    North of 20K when launched, you could buy an R1 and a set of racing leathers for less. It had no touring ability thanks to a tiny tank and no luggage, and the pillion seat was tiny, so only those who actually rode one started to understand why you’d want one - and I still do.
    Yamaha kept the bike in the range quite a long time, but it was quietly dropped a few years ago. In the meantime Yamaha’s introduced the MT-09 and MT-03.
    The inline-triple powered MT-09 is a stonking middleweight machine with a huge fun factor. The MT-03 is a big single which is something that is described as a Roadster-Motard, and is a radical machine in many ways, but it’s an acquired taste. All MT models are a heap of fun to ride, thanks to the engineers focussing on torque rather than power.
    Enter the 07
    Commuters might ignore the MT-07, because the sticker price is higher than most scooters, many small Japanese-brand machines and most of the Chinese and Korean bikes available - but they will miss out on one of the best city carvers around.
    In a previous life I was a motorcycle courier, and an MT-07 would have been awesome for the job, and still entertaining on weekends.
    Yamaha sold squillions of learner legal sporty naked machines in the seventies and eighties, to young riders looking for performance they could legally ride and more experienced riders looking for lightweight inexpensive fun. The MT-07 is aimed at the same market. It’s just legal for learners - the capacity and power-to-weight ratio is on the limit - but it’s also physically big enough and capable enough to appeal to more experienced riders.

    No abs available? Well I guess this is the case in australia? But most MT-07 in here finland comes with abs, and most people buy their bikes with abs, because insurances are then much cheaper than without them.

    • @jacksonwholeexperience409
      @jacksonwholeexperience409 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DJDoDostyle We don't have ABS in the States, where the bike is called the FZ-07. I just bought mine 1 month ago. The braking is sufficient without ABS. Funny things is, they actually make a traction controller for this machine!

      @cueballB 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teton Riders This bike really doesn't need traction control. If you fall off of this bike, you should be forbidden to ever ride a motorcycle again.

    Great review! Are these bikes suitable for a learner just shy of 6 ft 4?

    $10,000 in Australia? You poor guys :( we're paying around $7k here in the states. I hope your prices come down, it's a great bike!

      We pay more for everything in Australia Eric Bruns!! It's because we have so many deadly animals here haha. Agree about the bike though, the whole MT range are great bikes.

      Cycle Torque Dang, 40% markup I can't imagine what a Harley would cost over there haha. Is your fuel fairly expensive as well?

    • @Ezethede
      @Ezethede 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabriel Yohannson That is fairly expensive. All the more reason to get a fuel efficient bike! I bet the FZ07 is selling pretty well over there.

      Eric Bruns Yeah, a lot of things tend to be more expensive in AUS than the US. My girlfriend has her dual citizenship with both countries. We were there last winter (summer for US) and I got to drive on the left side of the road, right side of the "cah"!!! She wants to move there to have our children there... ooooh buggah!

    $10k? Holy crap. You can pick them up for under $6k now in the US.

    • @romanval69
      @romanval69 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Micah Murray 10K Australian = $7730 USD, so it's not too far off. In Australia they can only advertise a "drive off" price (tax/plate/registration fees are included in formal price), so it's probably about the same..

      Roman Val I wish they did that in the US. I looked at one with a $6,999 price tag on it, then when you get to the sales manager they end up at $8,700 to take it home with you.

    Love everything about the review, but your video production really could improve. From the crappy jazz at the beginning to the significant changes in volume across the video, to the shaky and bad camera angles and the video effects. It does not look very professional!

    Gets filthy super fast, progessively uncleanable due to naked nature, which also gets you cold an annoyed throughout winter. Not a good bike for those who main bikes, a great option for those who also own a car.
