You spend 3/4 on just the left side using the single tile tool instead of the "+" shaped tool (hammer) and then spammed the pickaxe on a single tile 4 times when there was nothing there. This ain't even the minigames fault, just you not knowing what you're doing

Best method for me is, I whack a section with the hammer (press R to switch to it) until it's completely gone to leave a cross section. If I don't see an item, I move to another part of the wall. Then start using the pickaxe once you see something. You can damage more squares with the hammer, but the pickaxe takes out specific spots more quickly. I've never not been able to find something this way, and I usually find everything. Also, with the pickaxe, when you hit a square, all adjacent squares take one damage. That could help from time to time as well.
Also keep in mind that the pickaxe does half a damage to surrounding tiles. So if a soft tile is cracked and there is a non cracked soft tile next to it you should hit the non cracked tile to break both.
The hammer can only be used 25 times, while the pickaxe can be used 50 times. What I do is start at one edge, and make a grid of hole each three squares apart. This gives me a high chance of getting most in one go, then if I do this and I miss, I just go in between what I already dug. I almost always get all the the gems this way.
Overdoing the pick in one spot and going too random. Best to follow a pattern and see how much damage each tool does. Pick does 1 damage to surrounding tiles, 2 damage to the middle tile.

But I percevered and eventually got all the ones I wanted. With all the walls that collapsed in the underground due to trainers digging for treasures, you gotta wonder why the whole underground didn't collapsed on some trainers killing them right then and there while others are burried alive and senting their Pokemon to find help somewhere in the hopes they might make it out before they die from starvation. Also, scientific studies show that doing extensive mining and drilling cause earthquakes, making it even likely that structures will collapse. But hey, Gamefreak "logic". Someone should make a meme about this. Michelle.
Being honest? I had this problem too. But here's the trick I found the best. It's basically a game of battle ship. Hammer is a + cross section, but makes the wall collapse faster. So I use the hammer to search around to see if I can find anything. I usually try the areas with the least amount of resistance first, and if I find anything I use the pick. Every item you find in the Underground has a specific shape and it usually doesn't change how they're positioned. So if you find a small piece you'll be able to figure out where the rest of the item is. You just gotta find it first. After the least amount of resitance. I usually try the stone and move up. And if you find a metal bar under the dirt. Move the HELL away from there. I've found at least 9 times out of 10, there's no treasure around it. EDIT: I FIGURED SOMETHING HUGE! So YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE ITEMS UNDER THE CRACKS! I was doing some testing. And yes! You can see a small color difference, you can tell between the iron bars, or when it's an actual item! I would suggest using the hammer until you get the dirt and then use the pick to create cracks so you can see if you can see anything underneath. Sorry if no one sees this, I thought this was an interesting development
Keep in mind that the pick does half a damage to surrounding tiles, you can basicly open 4 soft tiles by only 2 hits with it if you are doing it right. If you are smashing one place with it you are doing the minigame wrong.
A trick I've noticed - you can often see parts of items (especially colourful ones) through the very cracked tiles (the ones right before breaking entirely). So if you slowly chip away with the aim of getting as many of those almost-broken tiles as possible, you may be able to spot treasures sooner, while doing less damage to the wall.
The strategy that has helped me is using the rock pick every 2 spaces. Once you clear a row move to the next one. You want to be methodical and for best results make sure that you don't leave uncovered 2x2 spaces Another tip-using the rock pick will actually weaken the rocks next to it by one stage, use this to maximize the amount of area you clear for little damage. Make sure you only use the sledge hammer for helping to uncover large items.

Did this when I was playing the DS version, still works now and its even faster if you use the touch screen. just ham the hammer to see what you get. if it's not something you want just bash the next area. There's only a few things that has very similar colors. since they introduced the diglets time is of the essence especially for the mysterious shards grind. Ignore the boxes, get the shards. The only issue is if the rng gives you 90% stone tiles then regardless you're not going to find all the items unless there inside that 10% dirt patch
When you have cracks on the tile, you can actually see glimpse of the item under thru those cracks. Playing on a big screen and then magnifying the pixels can help see if you see any change in color. The switch has a zoom function to enable when you double tap right stick.
The best way to find items is to use the pick axe from the corners and count in a 4x4 ratio. Covers more ground and uses less durability. If you still don't find anything use the Pickaxe in between the cracks you made diagonally.
I typically start at the top right with the picaxe and move horizontally to the bottom left. If I find anything then I break that, if I don't then I expand on the cracked slabs. I don't use the hammer at all and going through with that pattern typically gets me all of the hidden things or makes me miss just 1.
heres a tip, you can see the colors of an item through the cracks in the dirt layer. so, what I always try to do is use the hammer on rock layers, then the pick on dirt, to try to reveal as much as possible with as little wall durability as possible.
I spam the hammer in either a grid, or random spots til something comes up. If I only uncovered a tiny piece of the object, I use the hammer a little bit more and clean it up more with the pickaxe and repeat.
Big hammer is there for seeking. I recommend hitting the third diagonal of each corner until you see the bottom and then working inward until you find something, spacing the hits with gaps for coverage. Only the smallest of items can be hard to find this way.
I encourage you very heavily to go watch austin john plays’ video on getting statues in the underground, as it has a good guide for getting the most effective digging done not only for statues but for anything
You need to use the hammer to open bigger areas of stone to check for items and after you found them you swap to the pickaxe to reveal them completley.
I suggest a 3x3 starting from hehe top left go right by 2 and down by 3. Chisle as much as needed then another 3 down or to the right till you make a Lil grid and you will probably see something then
I like Austin Johns' method. Start from the top left go three spaces down three spaces right. The use the pickaxe go three spaces down or right and repeat. All spots should be three spaces apart.
What i typically do is move to the complete opposite side of the wall if I'm not seeing anything or just finding large patches that haven't been touched. I just got both items from the wall just before it was about to collapse. It doesn't always work but you should hopefully find at least one item using this method.
Know how you feel happend to me in the past in the older games all that searching just to find nothing but it's not all bad unless figure out the patterns.

All you have to do is dig down to the dirt section with the crack in it. If there's no color inside that crack, there's nothing there.

I always use the big hammer to clear out multiple tiles then use the pick axe for finner details, I get all stuff digged up 90% of the time.

Some times its a rare item and some uncommons.
Other times its just 4 small spheres.
When you have cracks on the tile, you can actually see glimpse of the item under thru those cracks.
