Something I failed to mention in this video is this dog was extremely aggressive towards our middle son and the baby. To the point he even got in my space and growled at the baby while I was holding her.. he got ahold of a chicken and before we took him to the shelter.. he wasn’t chipped but they said he will probably get adopted fast. I see a lot of really rude comments over a dog… Come on people..
I don't see how you can put your lives out there like that but we appreciate you sharing. There are alot of nut cases around that sit on the couch in their underwear with holes while eating cheese puffs criticizing people just trying to provide content.
I certainly hope Corbin takes pitty on that poor sweet puppy and sneaks him some food. He doesn't know his way home or he'd have left by now ,he's only about 5-6months old because that's when they routinely neuter dogs.... He's lost.! As a kindness to the owner who loves and misses him please feed him!!! Notification of shelters and the police department that he is there, would be a act of kindness that as a dog owner and lover , would bless me beyond words that he's being cared for till they are reunited.
Absolutely! I would be so grateful if someone took well care of my fur babies if they were lost. I could never not feed a animal that showed up at my door for more than a few hours.
Hey Ben, I grow Painted Hills sweet corn and it grows anywhere from 5 to 7 ft. Yours growing consistently short is most likely a nitrogen problem. I always add extra blood meal to my corn beds as it is a heavy feeder. I also cover the stalks with compost and horse manure after the corn is a couple of feet tall. More nitrogen and keeps wind from blowing them down. Painted Hills is a cross of Painted Mountain flour corn and Luther Hill sweet corn.
A mild N deficiency will show up as pale OLDER leaves. A severe one shows pale leaves all over and will have only one stem. The quick glance we got- doesn’t look like N deficient corn. Looks pretty dark green.
Corn is a very very heavy feeder. It needs lots of fertilizer and water. Particularly nitrogen before it tassels and calcium nitrate when it tassels. A good dose of triple 15 from Lowe’s at pre-plant, knee high, shoulder high, then one more time when it tassels. If it’s not raining twice a week keep it watered. If the leaves start to roll up it’s stressed out. Don’t let it stress out. Keep it weeded, hilled, fertilized, and watered and normally you have good success. Also, plant your rows a minimum of 30 inches apart and thin your plants to about 8 to 12 inches apart within your rows. That gives the pollen ample room to fall all the way down into the surrounding plants when the wind blows. Plant your corn plots in a square or rectangle as large as you can. If it stresses too much it will try to reproduce before it should and that’s when you get short stalks and low production
I would instead invest in efforts to build the soils beneficial microbial and fungal life. That is where the real soil wealth is achieved. I currently own land that was plowed and fertilized for two generations with manufactured fertilizer for row crop production. The soil is lifeless and dead and works only as a medium to hold more chemical fertilizer in order to grow something.
Awesome creation Ben. Yes film all that. So your canine shadow looks like someone’s stock guardian dog. He seems very respectful to homesteading life. Maybe inquire through neighbors. My neighbors dog went running every morning with my husband 4 miles then one day he just wouldn’t go home and the neighbor said he cries to get back and did we want him. Then the other neighbor’s dog came to help me with morning chores for a few days then one afternoon while we were cutting firewood we saw him dragging his dog house across 10 acres to our yard. So Ben, sometimes dogs and cats choose you. Blessings ❤️🌱
Dog is a pure breed Anatolian Shepherd. Expensive livestock guardian. Someone will be grateful to get their dog back. It will most probably be chipped - and a vet can confirm the name and address of its owner.
I totally agree but Ben didnt do that even though it was the right thing. He clearly told everyone he stops working during the heat of the day. There was his time.....

Years ago I think the guy's name was Jerry Green on PBS TV. This is his recipe for getting rid of Japanese Beetles. 1) Get a cheap or used Blender for your garden. DO NOT USE YOUR KITCHEN BLENDER!!! 2) Take a pint jar out to the garden, pick the Beetles off your plants, put them in the jar. Just keep your hand over the top so they don't escape. 3) Put them in the garden blender, fill it with water and blend well. 4) I used old pantyhose to strain the Beetle Juice into a Sprayer and fill with it with water. 5) Spray your plants. 6) He said you can do this with any bugs in your garden. But, it has to be the bug you're having a problem with. I only did the Japanese Beetles Juice. They made lace out of my Concord Grape Leaves and Detasseled my Corn. I never had another problem with Japanese Beetles. Have a blessed evening, stay safe and healthy 🙏🥰👍👌🙏✝️🇺🇸🙏
For the Japanese beetles: Geraniums! They LOVE geraniums. Thing is, they get "drunk" after eating the geraniums - they fall over and lay there vulnerable to predators for up to 24 hours.
Awww.. That dog is adorable!! And seems to have taken to you and your boys. What a sweetie, I'm sure the owner is missing it.. Hope you can find who it belongs to. Not knowing how long its gone without eating and being a puppy, it needs food. It's obviously lost and looking for someone to feed it. That's the humane thing to do.. I've adopted both a stray cat and a dog that wandered into my yard, (after looking for a lost dog sign around town and calling the local vet to see if anyone reported a lost animal) and both were the best pets l ever had.
Dogs naturally fast in the wild and their systems are designed to go longer periods without food, a day or 2 without food will not harm a dog in that condition.
@@pamnoonan3107 Fast in the wild, this dog was not born in the wild and does not know the ways of wild dogs, I hope like Ben you are not an animal owner. You are not the type.
@@judylynn9358 A dog is born with natural animal instinct wether it is born in the wild or not. What has that got to do with my ability to have animals? Do you honestly think Ben would allow a dog to starve? Do you really think you have the right to judge someone you don’t know or from watching a short video on TH-cam? Just because I made a statement of fact, does not mean I would allow neglect of an animal. Not feeding the dog was a valid choice and as Ben said in the comments, it was snappy at one of his children, he did the right thing not to feed it at his home. Not every choice is easy, but his children come first.
Please Please feed and water this little furbaby.. some times God send's critters are way for us to bless them till their other home is found.... for now he has you all...
@@trinahume773 that’s what they did. They didn’t want to feed it so it wouldn’t want to stick around. I’m sure there are grateful puppy parents, thanks to their actions. Take care.
Hey sorry but I was a Dog Obedience Instructor for 10yrs & the first thing we taught & explained to owners was to make sure during a Fireworks Day etc to monitor or keep their pets very close as they are super sensitive to Fireworks- come on the 4th July is HUGE. The moment a dog shows any form of aggression toward children I would immediately remove him as this will not change & could be a huge problem. Ben you have done the right thing for your Family & when you are ready to get a dog- 1/Check the parents of the dog out for temperament issues- REALLY IMPORTANT. Great video Thankyou- Cheers Denise- Australia
I heard the pup cry a bit and then you said he cried all night! Please feed him. He's probably very hungry! And people, please take care of your pets, especially during fireworks! Make sure they are put somewhere safe and comfortable during this time! Spend some comfy time with a big chew toy or bone with your dog during fireworks, so they don't associate with stress. Thank you! Take care and God bless. Take or call a rescue please ASAP if it's aggressive as you say. First, before, it hurts a child or an animal. I'm sure it followed the smell of food as much as you've been cooking etc. Probably very hungry! And not trained yet. He's a beautiful dog! I'm sure owners are probably looking all over for him.
The heatwave that came though the Pacific Northwest caused literally ALL of my spinach and salad greens to bolt. They wern't even big enough to harvest leaves yet and now they are going to the bees. Instead of being upset, though, I'm going to use this opportunity to teach myself how to collect seeds to reuse next year. I've never tried to save my own seeds before, but I'm looking forward to it!
Seed saving is wonderful and easy, especially for greens because they are dry! I just put them in a strainer and shake and move it around with my fingers to separate any chafe from seeds.
I am a dog lover....BUT.....I agree with you! The shelter is the best place for this dog...especially after you explaining his temperament. You will know when you're ready for a dog (or not!) and choose your own. If he is chipped he's probably got someone looking for him. Bless you Hollar family for doing the right thing.
Everything on your homestead is growing! The pigs look fat and happy, the garden is green and tall, and the Greenstalk is so fluffy and full! Good work y'all.
Love it when your videos show up on my news feed. Your garden is amazing. Everything is so big. I could watch a garden video of your garden every day. I know your just getting started with this years garden as I’m posting my comment but am happy to see how your onions went the other day.
No matter what people say about your decision on the pup. You done what’s best for your family only y’all know what’s best for you. Keep the great videos coming I’ve learned a lot. Thanks again!!
I live in Rutherford County. Our shelter is a horrible place. I know from personal experience that if that puppy doesn't find a home and shuts down while there, it will die. We have a lost and found page for pets of the county that rescue people monitor and will do their best to find their home. I'm not being mean, just realistic. I do love your garden though. I envy how you can get things to grow. I struggle with the heat too and give up. Wish you well and hope our weather cooperates and your harvest is large.
If you take the dog to the shelter and no one claims him in so many days, you can adopt him. Just ask dog shelter to contact you if no one claims him. He looks like a good dog to have on your farm. He might get big, but it’s okay to have him in the house at night or during cold weather. Just train him to stay in one room, that way he won’t bark at night. That is if you end up adopting him. Garden looks great! I was wondering where y’all where, so glad all is well and life is good on the Hollar Homestead. Thank you for sharing!
WOW, so much to comment on. Stray dog, you took it to a shelter; good job. I didn't bother reading comments on this as I'd assumed from the beginning you'd take him to a shelter so his owners could find him. Grubs, HEY, you got chickens man ;). Beetles: diatomaceous earth; just mix some in a spray bottle, or my method, a pressurized tank and spray the areas they are feeding. It rinses off in rain though but is safe for your family and deadly to beetles :). PICKLES. Oh yeah, I can see it now, "Holler Homestead Pickles; limited supply" ;). Oh, and are chickens the best gardeners or what? Hope you have room for all that harvest you'll be doing, tomatoes out the ears, potatos, watermelon, cucumber, beans, beans, beans. Hugs to you and yours and thanks for sharing your life with us; it's an immeasurable gift.
I hate to break this to you, but... That dog came to you because he chose to. He will be the best dog you've ever had. He may belong to someone else physically, but he loves you guys!!! 😁😁😁❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🐕🐕🐕
That pup looks like he belongs in the family!! He fits right in, soo adorable like the rest of you. Hope his owners can be found or you all get to keep him by some wonderful miracle. I believe in miracles, things happen for a reason. Possibly he has siblings that need homes? The boys are so responsible, I can see them with their own pup. Did I plead their case well LOL 😆 dog mama here, my lil guy just turned 17 years old!!
Read Ben's comment about what he forgot to say. The dog has growled at some in the family. Said he even growled at Ben when he was holding Buggie. So Ben took him to the dog pound. They can't keep a dog that is growling at family members as a growl turns into a bite. Cannot have that. I'm glad Ben took him to the pound. Also said the dog was not chipped.
@@MsApril29906 typical for a pup. They have to be introduced to livestock under supervision…:and they will be aggressive toward kids if they aren’t familiar and/or have not had training. I’m sure someone is looking for that pup
That pup looks like he could be an Anatolian Shepherd, which is ideal for a farm or homestead. If he behaved aggressively towards your children and your animals, that would be a deal-breaker. Although some bad behaviors can be corrected with training. Anyway, he adopted you...not the other way around. If you don't want him, that is your decision...I hope that you took him to a non-kill shelter. He will be adopted quickly...he is beautiful and has an engaging personality. Your garden is absolutely gorgeous! Keep up the good work!😊❤
Try interplanting zinnias in your veggies. They are pretty, easy to grow, and they attract the brachonid wasps that will take on your caterpillars. I know Meg mentioned that she wanted to remember to plant more flowers. We planted geraniums in with our potatoes, zinnias in with our brassicas, and marigolds in with our tomatoes and peppers.

If you can't find the owners, keep him. It's rare for a pup that age to be so well adjusted to chickens. Usually they go for them, especially if he's hungry. So he'd be a very good fit. Besides a few sleepless nights from howling, he should learn quick enough to stay outside.
Please feed that cute little dog and give some love, he might have run away from the fire works it would be nice to treat like one of your child with lots of love until you help him find his owner
You are thoughtful, caring, sensitive people with a proven history of compassionate stewardship…no one should question or criticize you for life choices made with love.
Not feeding an animal while looking for it's owner is not very loving. How would he like it if his kid went missing n nobody fed him or her that found said kid? It wouldn't take long to make a few calls or check local lost n found dogs either but not feeding then complain dog ate a chicken.. wow duh. This is the only video they have put out that I am very unhappy with. I wouldn't expect that of the Hollars.
When it comes to dealing with your insect problem in your gardens... guinea fowl, they eat tics, beatles and other such insects. Just hatch a few a leave them to roam your homestead. As long as they find food, which they easily should, then they should just stick around and continue eating bugs and grubs while not eating any of your veggies if what I have heard is true (still something to research for yourselves). Thanks for the video!
He seems like a good dog. He acts like our Sadie, when she turned up on our porch, (sleeping in an Amazon box). We've had her over two years and she is a great watchdog. Feed him, and hopefully her owners miss him and will come looking!
my buddy puts an old meatal japanese beetle trap up with a pvc pipe doing down to the ground in the chicken pen. the chickens just sit there waiting for their snacks to drop down. couldn't believe how well it worked and the chickens ate well
When you own a lot of land and animals, dog's belong outside. Not every dog is an indoor dog. We had 5 acres and our dogs protected all of our animals from Rattlesnakes, coyotes and from bobcats and sometimes other dogs. One of our dogs saved my life. I'd be dead if she had been in the house.
Feed and water that sweet thing - a gentle giant! The owners will be glad you took care of it instead of running it off. of course, he will be happy, also.
That dog is definitely an Anatolian Shepherd. Glad y’all took him to the shelter instead of just running him off. He’s just a baby. Probably scared and hungry.
The pup is adorable, but, like you said he's someone's pet. I'm glad you are trying to find his owner. As an animal lover it's hard not to "take them all in" but we all have to know our own limits and personal preferences. The garden and everything looks great! Love hearing from your family!
SEED SAVING...I cover the seed heads with little organza drawstring bags (like people use for wedding favors) until time to harvest. It keeps the birds from eating them, keeps most of the bugs off and keeps the seeds from falling to the ground before I can get to them. So far it has worked really well.
@@puskabeuford8667 Dogs can travel amazing distances when frightened. The fourth of July is the worst holiday for pets. So many go missing and end up in shelters far from home.
God has given us dominion over the animals. Not a duty. We are also supposed to be good stewards of what He has given us. Verbiage is important, because duty implies rankling against it. Stewardship means an active interest in the betterment of what is being stewarded.
I have two large dogs. Had a stray show up. Couldn't find his owner and he wasn't chipped thought about keeping him but then he bit me three times and peed on my bed try to give him away didn't have any luck so I took him to the shelter which I've never done that before. Don't feel bad you can't have a dog be aggressive towards your children and you.
Farmers should know the value of animals. I was not going to comment until you said it’s just a dog. He’s not just a dog, he’s a soul that needed your help. Come on Ben! He cried all night at your door for comfort and food. Shame on you
Good to see more of Meg again . If the dog is well taken care of he more than likely has a chip, which can be scanned by a veterinarian. Then he can go to his owner. In the meantime you should feed him. If he doesn’t have a chip then you can keep him. He seems like a sweetheart and is so cute. I love looking at your garden. It is such a relaxing thing to go out at the end of the day and see what is sprouting up and what is ripening. I have a small garden and get a great deal of satisfaction from growing vegetables.
You need to look into Maremma Sheepdogs. They are amazing LGD's & super great with people! Our male doesn't do great with the other male Aussies, but the female loves EVERYONE! They both are awesome at guarding our property & animals. They absolutely are enthralled with our goats. They do great with the chickens too, Maremmas are less prone to run off & quieter than Great Pyrenees. Looks like your kiddos would love an LGD out on the property keeping the critters away & loving his/her family. If you get one, make sure that they are being raised out with the livestock where you get them from. I've noticed that makes a huge difference. Then train on a tether or short leash until you can trust with animals. Then gradually increase the length of the tether. Then off leash/tether time supervised. So excited seeing another video from you guys! Just love your little family!
He’s a puppy! ♥️♥️Feed him please🙏 and keep him safe. if nobody wants him! I know you’re not dog people but every farm needs a dog and a cat… Suck it up farm life kids! Love you lots!!
We took a chance on a rescue dog found on the Blue Ridge parkway. He was in bad shape. We called him Ori which means Light in Hebrew. After a year he has been a delightful companion and definitely fits in with us and our schedule. He lives with us whether in or out. Also he's an alert dog which is good for since we live on 40 acres in the middle of nowhere. Always enjoy your videos and watching your family grow and learning all the guy stuff. God bless.
As you said yourself, he is just a puppy. I'm glad you at least gave him water but if you aren't going to keep him what's the harm in filling his belly? If you aren't going to feed him, take him to a shelter. They now have chip readers and will try to find his owners, or take him to the vet. I like you, Ben. I watch your channel but I'm not pleased that you wouldn't feed a puppy. and take him somewhere where his owners are probably looking for him. That's not too much to ask. You'd appreciate the same for your pet.
I see a lot of homesteaders on You Tube treating dogs badly, why I have no idea, dogs can be good workers on a farm, but they also need to have love and be kept safe. I am genuinely disgusted by how some treat their dogs and cats.
I think some of the homesteaders take to heart the Joel Salatin and Greg Judy gospel. They aren't pets and consider the mindset of survival of the finest. Which can be a method for managing animals on the farm. However, domesticated animals that can be dependent on people, regular vet care is essential. Dogs and cats may be work animals so if they are not going to eaten have yearly maintenance fees for vet care.
Maybe Ben could post the name of the shelter where he took the pup. That will enable to owners to more easily find him if word begins to spread about the pup showing up at Hollar Homestead. (Fireworks can make dogs run very far from their original location so the owners may not know to check with shelters at a distance.). Also, I’ll look at NC Anatolian Rescue groups... breed rescues tend to network really well.
I just gave a puppy to my twin 6 yo granddaughters. I named her Bernice as she was the spitting image of "your" pup. She is built thin like a shepard and half St. Bernard and half German shepard, and marked like a St. Bernard. Interestingly, she is 4 months old and just about the same size. I kept her sister "Rosie" who is built like a St Bernard and is colored like a German Shepard. They are great, easy trainers, good with the livestock and children, generally low key. Hope you find the owner. Chances are they chipped the dog and animal control will have a reader.

Anyone complaining that they did not keep someone else's pup that showed up on their homestead after the 4th, YOU are the reason so many lost pets NEVER get returned to their families! Ben clarified some things in his pinned comment, the pup was not microchipped and was getting aggressive towards the BABY and one of the other children. The pup obviously is NOT used to very young children and has to be returned to their family or taken to a shelter. No you don't get to sit and judge them for doing what is right for their family based off of what your morals would tell YOU to do in that situation. Not feeding a pup to discourage a bond when you find a stray is a good thing. There is the creek on their property the pup can get to, so its not like their not giving him water is a cruelty when he had free access to it just like the pigs do. A Live Stock Guardian dog in training would have been missed the moment it went missing. This pup was still in training, that is highly likely the reason he went after the chicken.
Geez! Don't people have a choice whether they want a pet or not? The Hollars aren't obligated to feed and house a dog that wanders onto their property! Why weren't the neighbors out there calling for the dog? I saw nearby homes. I'm sure voices & sounds travel. Some pet owners are lazy and expect someone will call them or bring their dog back to their doorstep. We don't know the full story so please stop being so bossy and judgmental, people!
Definitely looks like an Anatolian to us. Dogs have a way of finding kind people . We have one LGD that showed up 2 years this fourth with electric fence collar on. We posted all over, put ads up and nobody claimed her so here she lives
Being a "dog person" all my life, my heart melted when I saw the pup following you as you did chores. What a sweetheart of a dog. However, I feel you did the absolute best thing you could do, given all the circumstances. You didn't deserve all the negative comments people left, Ben, and there's no way I'd abandon your channel because you did what you felt was best. Especially if he showed any aggression toward the kids, regardless of the reason. Caught you between a rock and a hard place, it seems. I do hope his owners thought to check all the area shelters and he was reunited with them. ~ Re Butcher Box: You guys are THE reason I finally signed up and started ordering from them, even after hearing about Butcher Box for two years. Low cost nitrogen: mulch with grass clippings, and set up an "out house." Pail half full of water, urine in the water, water the corn, refill the bucket for the next person.

All ya'll saying it is cruel to not feed and water the puppy, do you follow this family and really think they would not feed or water that pup? If you feel that way shame on you! I assure you it got food and water! Ben simply said they didn't feed it the night it showed up hoping it would go home. Ya'll be ashamed!
THIS !! There is no way they are being as cruel as everyone is assuming. Good grief. He already said they gave him water immediately and that they had hoped he would go home the first day. Since he didn't Ben said he was going to deal with it that day. You people are MAJORLY overreacting.
But the dog belongs to someone else who, by all appearances, loves and cared for him. I would suggest feeding him though. Puppies need food every day. 🦅🇺🇸
Onion seeds become onion sets in the first growing season (or pearl onions) , and become what we know as onions in the 2nd season. Similar with garlic.

As you say, he is someone's pet. Maybe he needs help finding his home. He still needs to eat. It's cruel to leave him hungry.
Dogs naturally fast in the wild and their systems are designed to go longer periods without food, a day or 2 without food will not harm a dog in that condition.
@@pamnoonan3107 no it won't but it was cruel.
I would bet my life they didn't even give it a drink of water.
Please feed the puppy something while you are trying to find his home. Growing puppies are like growing children; they need your care. 🌝💕
I have unsubscribe, so disappointed you didn't have the kindness to feed one of our lords beautiful creatures
I've started saving seeds this past past two years.
Please feed the cute little puppy till his owner is able to find him. God bless and hope he is able to be reunited with his family soon.
That's a right nice dawg. Hope you find its family.

Please feed the dog until you find the owner. Your garden is amazing. ❤️
Ben will handle it. Pay attention to what he said today.
No offense BUT that dog would be traumatized by a shelter. Ya know?

@@aprocessofchange6251 I guess I didn’t hear that part in the video. Then, of course, that would make things different.

@Bett Johnson me too....

Oh my gosh. That dog is adorable.
Poor thing. He deserves a family who loves dogs.
We have 5 on our homestead.
Yes he does. I hope he finds his family.
He does. I bet he has one that's looking for him. Personally, I prefer the company of dogs to most people these days.
I was coming to ask what happened to the dog. Thank you for pinning the update Ben!
That's funny! I own a lot of land and animals and all 4 of my dogs come in and out of the house as they please.
Animals show us what unconditional love is we should return it to them
Feed and water that sweet thing - a gentle giant!
Your place is looking great Ben! Ignore the haters regarding the dog. No matter what you do, you'll never make those types of people happy. -Mike
Love your ingenuity. "Didn't have this tool, so I made one." Garden looks great.
SEED SAVING...I cover the seed heads with little organza drawstring bags (like people use for wedding favors) until time to harvest. It keeps the birds from eating them, keeps most of the bugs off and keeps the seeds from falling to the ground before I can get to them. So far it has worked really well.
It's your Godly duty to make sure that dog has something to eat and some water, it's hard telling how long hes been missing from the owners
His coat is not nappy and he smelled fresh so I would guess he was roughing it no longer than a couple days. Probably lives withing 5 miles or so. 🦅🇺🇸
@@puskabeuford8667 Dogs can travel amazing distances when frightened. The fourth of July is the worst holiday for pets. So many go missing and end up in shelters far from home.
Godly duty? Good grief. The shaming is really gross. That dog isn't lethargic or showing an ounce of distress. Mind your self.
C'mon now, whether you keep him find the owner or take him to the pound, please feed the poor pup. 🐕

Amen 🙏

Feed him while you look for his owner. He is beautiful and he looks like he cou or be a good homestead dog. Hopefully his owner is looking for him.
Well we all know now that the hollars are anti pet. The dog was probably just scared and hungry. He would have been fed on my land.
