    Jumping the broom is an African-American wedding tradition. Enslaved people were not legally allowed to marry so jumping the broom in the ceremony was the symbolic way of signing the marriage license. It’s a still living tradition. Great reaction!

    In the book, it was Louis's brother who 'fell' down some stairs and died. They changed it to a wife and unborn child for the movie because they needed a little more 'no-homo' for the film.

      Yeah because the studio execs in the 90s were threatening to cancel it because it was too gay. Good thing David Geffen was gay and let them make it as homoerotic as possible without explicitly saying it

      The studio execs also took out a lot of the overt gayness in the scripts too. Cher was originally asked to play the role of Louis, but she respectfully declined.

    The switch from the wedding to the suicide was one of the best things I've seen in terms of emotional turnaround. And it doesn't feel cheap or gratuitous at all, it has so much weight. And it really helps us empathize even more intensely with Louis' pain

    So disagree about the Daniel master class shit at the beginning, I think it’s so grounding. The guy who’s a Pulitzer winning semi retired journalist who is estranged from his family is the exact guy who signs the master class contract and that plus the Parkinson’s is the exact guy who receives those tapes with the audio of Louis attacking him and flies to Dubai to follow up. It is believable that Daniel is there and that their conversations are happening in our world, which provides such a delicious contrast to the uncertainties of the Louis story. Daniel ends up the truth anchor/expert audience proxy and it’s awesome

    People are willfully ignoring that Anne Rice was a producer on this show when she died last December. Her son is still a producer on it as well. She was completely on board and excited for the show. She (according to her son) felt that this dived more into her story than the original story had. More true to the spirit of the story.

    • @chaotic7cam
      @chaotic7cam ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Her son is not a producer. I used to think this info as well and I myself accidentally have spread this misinformation. Both Anne and Chris had little to do with this beyond early pitches and selling AMC the rights. Anne died before the show went into production. And then while Chris WAS set to produce, he had mysteriously cut ties. I follow his FB page and he hasn't posted anything about it at all despite being active and talking about his late mom, Anne Rice. I have a feeling he signed and NDA and is sadly not happy with where the show has gone, cause NDA's only prevent you saying negative things, not positives or promoting the show. The other rumor is that Chris had written the pilot originally but AMC scrapped it, hence the leaving. Creative differences. I feel conflicted about this.
      Basically though just be careful what info you spread when it comes to Word Of Mouth. Not berating you or anything, like I said, I spread this misinformation myself by accident before. But yeah, if you go and look on Chris Rice's official page, and do digging, you'll find Anne was excited pre-production, but she died before they even started filming, and lots can change in between then.

    • @chaotic7cam
      @chaotic7cam ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might want to edit this with clarification or delete this at this point given how many likes this is getting. That’s how misinformation spreads. 😬 People see stuff like this then repeat it, most of the time without doing research. Not your fault though you didn’t realize.

    • @loustat4037
      @loustat4037 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      i saw their names as producers. i hate purist book fans. Im glas the show was written this way regardless.

    • @chaotic7cam
      @chaotic7cam ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@loustat4037 You are looking at outdated information omg the amounts of likes this had acquired alarms me. I have been a fan and have personally followed Chris and Anne on their page and I even went to comic con with Chris and I’m gonna visit Anne’s grave next year. He always responds negatively and redirects all questions to AMC.
      This is scary how fast misinformation spreads I’m feeling my heart ache like Anne Rice literally died last year and why does everyone think it’s OK to not do actual research my god… I feel like I’m failing Anne because not a lot of people are speaking up. It doesn’t matter if you like the show it’s not about that this is about a Family Legacy and the legacy of the vampire book genre in general (Anne is the OG writer that made vampires beautiful).
      The things that were changed… I’m not surprised if this didn’t get Chris’ blessing because Lestat was based off of her husband Stan and Claudia on her deceased daughter.
      Respect authors this is disgusting. And it’s even more disgusting if OP saw my comments and didn’t delete.
      Like the show all you want but once you start WILLINGLY spreading FALSE information you are a part of the problem.
      Do your digging beneath the surface. Also if Chris is listed as a producer it’s a legal footnote their lawyers probably had to keep in if he contributed in any way. That could mean he contributed for 2 weeks, they scrapped everything, and then he parted ways quietly.
      The man worked super close with his mother and they collaborated. He is a writer himself too and there’s rumors he’ll finish the books his mom was writing. That’s how close they were.
      Chris is the only person who can now speak for the deceased Anne Rice and you won’t even look for the truth.
      Like the show all you want it’s great production value, but do not go around disrespecting the dead author and her family by making it seem like he’s okay with this adaptation when he clearly isn’t! He promotes EVERYTHING they’ve created. If he approved of this he’d publicly say so and be promoting it as well.
      Like the shows you like but have respect for the dead and spreading a message that makes it sound like Chris and Anne Rice approved of this.
      Also FYI my qualms on this show have nothing to do with what you all probably think. I was a HUGE supporter and outspoken defender of the show until the end of episode 5. Anyone complaining about race is an asshole. My problems began when they diverged from the book and made Lestat a domestic abuser who pulverized Louis. When they made Claudia go through SA and the “writer” of the show said it was necessary in the after interview to ‘toughen’ claudia up.
      None of these things happened in the books and these characters were based off her family!

    • @chaotic7cam
      @chaotic7cam ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@loustat4037 The only thing I’ve got from this fandom now is that no one gives a crap about domestic abuser survivors!!!! ‘Book purists’ maybe ASK people why they’re upset about changes! The racist assholes who are upset about THOSE changes can go rot - but if people have problems solely after episode 5 it had to do with being abuse victims!!!!

    So glad you guys are watching this! It isn’t just a love letter to Anne Rice and the Vampire Chronicles but just to Vampire mythology. It takes the heart and soul of the book series and makes it fresh for fans of the books and newbies alike. It has the camp and dark humor I loved in the movie, the romance is breathtaking and it’s sexy as FUCK! I binged the whole thing and you will love it. It will make you laugh and cry; sometimes for the same reasons and sometimes for different reasons. I do wonder how they will utilize the story telling between Louis and Lestat and when they go their separate ways. Will Lestat not be seen or will he have a separate storyline that is completely different? I am excited for season two. Jacob Anderson who plays Louis is amazing, he was a rapper turned actor and hats off to him! Sometimes people aren’t able to transition from one creative outlet to the other but it was really well done. Sam Reid as Lestat is LESTAT!!! Also, watch out for Claudia when she comes in the scene. Bit late but here goes. The church scene was done in a real 150 year old church. There is a very good 42 minute video of Behind the scenes of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, it shows how they made the streets, Lestat's residence, the contacts they wear which by the way makes them nearly blind, the nails they wear right down to all the blood. Don't vampires ever wash? A nice scene of Lestat and Louis bathing together in a claw footed bath would have been nice to watch. Another chance at seeing Sam Reid's nice tush again as he stands up.

    The Lestat we're seeing in this show is more the Lestat from the other books than the original. Anne wrote that original book in grief and Louis shared that. Louis is NOT A RELIABLE NARRATOR. Hell that's the whole premise of this show... The first interview was wrong/jaded/bitter. So now he's' telling it with some more distance.

    In some ways this reminds me of the short-lived Dracula show from 2013-2014, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. They managed to balance the powerful charisma and animalistic brutality of the vampire. I was so sad when that Dracula show was canceled, but this looks like it will fill that space, and perhaps do it even better.

    Guys, I mean... that's freaking Grey Worm from GoT. So well done, and so happy with this adaptation that I never would have even heard of if I hadn't seen your thumbnail.
    Any time Louis is the POC character, as in this series, Lestat is the villain. Any time Lestat is the POV (i.e. the rest of the books) Lestat is the hero. I tend to lean toward Louis' viewpoint. Lestat has grown very comfortable in his nature as a killer at this point, while Louis is ever the idealist. Lestat has, to be fair, taken to only killing the evil by the late 90s, so those like Lilly shouldn't be scared in this era.

    • @TabbyeLynne

      Because he couldn't flirt with Louis in public so he had to use her, also Lestat is very bisexual and doesn't see what's wrong to fuck whoever he wants whenever he wants, he is in love with Louis only but that doesn't mean he'll be faithful

  • @MavenCree
    @MavenCree ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think the biggest difference between this telling and previous ones - the book and the movie was that... Lestat really does love Louis before he turns him. Before, he sees Louis, one night - bites him, makes him the offer and then turns him, like the next night. In this one, Louis catches his attention by pulling the knife on his brother. Then they ACTUALLY START DATING. He actually gets to know Louis and falls for him. They have conversations. They go to the opera. HE MEETS HIS FAMILY. This goes on for months, before the church scene. You say, 'manipulation'... but it's manipulation as far as any dating is.
    As for the violence... Lestat REALLY has a hate for the church - as he hints at. So to find Louis seeking solus in the place he hates so much instead of coming to him, REALLY pisses him off. Lestat is also from a place and time, where Louis being black doesn't make him see him as less. In fact, Lestat very much hates the way Louis is treated in America, just for being black. It's part of his pitch to make him a vampire.

    • @melsaint8616
      @melsaint8616 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @mavenCree, I agree with everything you say here, except I think there is an intentional manipulation here, that goes beyond just the normal dating . He isolated Louis and pressed his advantage when he knew Louis was at his most vulnerable, and withheld the full implications of what it means to be a vampire.

  •  ปีที่แล้ว

    What an incredible reaction!! You two are amazing!!
    Just an FYI refresher, the brother's death was actually in the books. That is what actually sends Louis into his downward spiral depression we see in the original movie. He wasn't married in the books.
    As a diehard fan of Anne Rice, I am so excited for this version of Interview of the Vampire. It is exciting. I also agree with you in regards to the start. It was off in regards to the story. But, once I recalled that he is the original Interviewer from way back when...well, it was a "this is where he is now" moment. But, still feel like it wasn't needed.
    Again, I am so excited for this show. Which makes me even more excited for The Mayfair Witches series. That means we will be getting all of the crossovers. AND, I will be able to see one of my favorite characters, the Vampire witch, Merrick Mayfair. I can't wait!!!

    💭 Lestat stalked Louis before they met and went to all of Louis regular hang-outs (like with Miss. Lily, and at the card game, etc.) just to try and get with Louis., He used vampire telepathy, manipulation, seduction, and major love-bombing on Louis from the jump!... Also a little 411 for you. When Louis is having breakfast with his family and Paul makes fun of tiger sister saying) “plenty of brooms as the Mayfair sisters home” it was a wink at the Anne Rive books The Mayfair Witches which AMC also bought and has developed into a separate show within the Immortal Universe series called THE MAYFAIR WITCHES that will premiere on AMC & AMC+ on January 9 2023. So it’s hunting that though Thais is a vampire show of the Vampire Chronicles, the witches ARE around in the same city and universe etc. all of which I love!!! It’s all slowly linked together just like the MCU movies which the AMC show/series creators are taking their blueprint from for this Immortal Universe series.

  • @donny1960

    Great reaction........ (actually the best i have ever seen). Remember though that the Title of series is taken from title of Anne's first book of the Vampire Chronicles. The writers and show runners actually have all 17 novels to work with. More than one book was referenced in the pilot. Also a reference to Anne's Mayfair Witches series was in there too. (That show starts in January). So the complaints that this series is not following Anne's book is just short sighted. She and her Son are listed as executive producers. The cast and scripts had her input before she passed last year. So it will be a wild ride. Anne was a very innovative writer. She was always refreshing her characters. Her spirit is all over this project. And that is a good thing.

    26:40 the book fans saying “this isn’t Anne’s novel” are misinformed. She retconned a lot of the first book when she decided to make it a series based on Lestat. The changes made do not change the characters and Anne wrote another book about the free people of color in New Orleans and I think they pulled from that for the Louis and Claudia changes and it works very well. Also she and her son signed off on everything before filming began so this is still her story and her work. The racists can stay mad because Jacob is even more like book Louis than Brad was.
