Omg I know and love this lady!!!! She definitely knows her blueberries and if you have a chance to go to Alma GA they have the cutest shop with all kinds of goodies.
You guys have a great crop this year!! I know that only happens every once in a while. You get to where you really cherish the good years. Great video!!
Gonna be a great year for them! My rabbiteyes have been covered in blooms like never before this year. Even got some breba fruit coming out on the figs.
I live up North on sandy soil. It's quite acidic. Can I use pine tree needles as a heavy mulch to keep the soil acidic? I get different answers from different people. P.S. I never cared for blueberries until I started growing them for my hubby. Now, the bushes are covered to protect from little birds and big birds. 🤣
40 years, wow. I've been told by some to prune them in autumn, others tell me spring. After 40 years off success you guys will definitely have the answer for me please.
It looks like they replied in the comments... She said, "We prune immediately after harvest, usually about July or August." Just wanted to make sure you saw her comment 🥰
There are so different accents in America-Southern drawl, Boston, North Dakota, Philadelphia, New York City (even in NY, a Long Island accent is different from the Bronx). 😄
@@theblueberrybarn Hi ! I love your Chanel and learn a lot . I wanted to have 5 blueberry plants . For my grant son to pick some fruit . It’s great fun to learn from my mistakes. All of them I want to fertilise with worm tea . Because other plants are thriving with it . But I will keep an eye on the phi hatch Melbourne can be very hot in summer .Thanks again from Australia.
I am so glad I found your channel. Thank you for the videos. I heard you mention blueberry cuttings. Do you have a video on how to start cuttings? If not I would love to know how you do it. Thanks !
Thanks for watching. We don't grow our own cuttings. We purchase from a licensed nursery. Some of the varieties we grow can't be propagated without having a license.
My bushes don’t have the leaf density like yours has. I apply ammonia sulfate two or three times during the year. What’s your fertilizer system, thanks
We apply fertilizer 2x a year, spring and fall. We use a complete fertilize in NPK and is a slow release such as 12-4-8 azalea fertilizer. Some varieties have more leaf density than others.
I recently purchased some land with 6 acres of blueberries on it. A lot of it has gone a bit wild from years of not being pruned or weeded. What would you recommend for getting the weeds and such between the bushes out and to help keep them from coming back? Is there a good way to create the raised beds after the blueberries are already mature and in place? Or would I have to pull the plants out to get the bed raised up?
It is very difficult for us to make an informed response since we don't know what the fields look like, but I would suggest for getting weeds and bushes out between rows is to use a product that is a glyphosate herbicide. You can spray the weeds with that it won't damage the blueberries. As far as beds, it would not be wise to pull plants out and then replant on a bed. You could dig out the middles and make them lower than the plants, but you would have to be real careful with water flow. You don't want to have a big water puddle in the middles so the water would have to be able to leave quickly.
@theblueberrybarn thank you for responding. I though about herbicides but i was concerned about it getting down into the soil and killing the blueberries. Is there a product you would recommend? The soil seems to have really good drainage i think i onky have a foot or two of topsoil before its sandy loam.
@@Eville.. Round Up can get down in the soil over time and damage your plants. but glyphosate herbicide is different. It doesn't get down in the soil. It is good at burning down the weeds and anything it touches. So you don't want to get it on the blueberries. There are many types and brands. Just look up what is near you and be sure to read the directions.
Thanks for this video ! What variety of Blueberry would you suggest to grow in Hawaii where temperatures never get below 60°F? I can take care of the soil makeup.
I've noticed in some of your videos you mention cuttings rather than seedlings, do you propagate your blueberry bushes by putting cuttings directly into their final growing location to root on their own?
That is a difficult question to answer. A fully mature plant, 4 years old, (certain varieties) can produce up to 6-8 pounds of berries per plant. But there are so many different varieties, soil condition, weather issues, bugs/disease etc. And how many berries can each person consume? So I really can't answer this question with very much accuracy.
I will also add that in 8 years we have lost 3 or more new blueberry plants. So, over plant and aim high. Things will happen, but you’ll get further toward goal.
@@colemansines9722 Good advice, I planted 2 blueberries directly in the ground last spring (my first time) and they died. Next spring (southern hemisphere), in September, I will plant 4 blueberries in large pots in acidic soil in full sun. From what I read it should work, I hope.
We use machines that emit a bird distress call, sometimes pray a chemical called Avian that is made from grape seed extract to deter birds, noise cannons that make loud noises at various times, and there is some development of lazers being in the field. We do a lot of praying too!

@@Darrylc73 Here is South Georgia, July/August is late summer. Still very hot and usually dry.
The plants look great! How often is fertilizer necessary and what is the best type?
We fertilize twice a year. You can use the same fertilizer you would use for azaleas, 10‐10‐10.
Great advice. Thank you. I was wondering when is the best time to prune.
We prune immediately after harvest, usually July or August here.

Do you know if there is anything similar to an extension office in Canada? I haven't been able to figure it out.
I really don't know. Check and see if you have a Department of Agriculture in your province.
Adding Azalea fertilizer in early winter made my blueberry bushes explode with fruit this spring
They grew their fruiting buds late in the previous season.

How do you fertilize your blueberries in terms of timing, methods and the specific fertilizer?
Thank you! What fertilizer is best and when to fertilize, I’m in zone 6
Fertilize and bud break and right after harvest. 10-10-10 or anything you would use on azaleas.

The nursery we buy from have them in deep cell trays and already have roots when we get them. We then transplant in the field.
