Hello Those blueberry facts are interesting and educational. I find them what i call a "rich" fruit. In other words i cannot eat many at one time, but I'm sure they benefit my health❤
@@77sun222 Yes they are called SUPER FRUITS because of their amazing health benefits.
Hello Mr and Mrs Wildes I really did enjoy this video. Sounds to me that the blueberry is a complex crop and we are lucky to have it on our table. Hope your last crop this year (2024) was plentiful. This is now when the dreaded climate change has us wary and worried about the unpredictability of it all. May i ask if your blueberries are classed as an organic crop?❤❤
@@77sun222 Glad you watched the video. Our 2024 crop was the best one yet. However, there was such a huge import of Mexican blueberries during our production window that the price for our berries was extremely low. So although we, as well as all Blueberry farmers, had a high yield, we didn't receive a good price. Our berries are not organic.
Fantastic idea, and so nutritious. Or individual puff pastry triangles with your pie filling❤
I sure hope you will eat more blueberries 🎉
Yes eat blueberries!
Hi Thank you. I love your zeal...and I believe you. Must keep blueberries on my shopping list❤
💯 Got it 🌟
Hello Very possibly i will increase my blueberry intake, thank you 💕
Hello Mrs Wildes So glad I've joined your family's blueberry passion. Never knew about your Alma farm being the second home also of Allen and Lars and their son. Their perennial garden and knowledge is phenomenal and fun. All the best🥰💯
So happy to have you watching!
😊HAPPY EASTER😊
Hi If i had to guess whose mother this was it would not be hard. What a lovely character she is. I usually throw those flimsy plastic pots away. Now i am not💯
You can tell I am from the South! I have that Southern Drawl! Glad you are watching and perhaps even learned something. SAFE those pots from the landfill!
How do you fertilize your blueberries in terms of timing, methods and the specific fertilizer?
You mentioned you sometimes spray your blueberries, what kind of sprays?
We spray insecticides and fungicides too.
May I ask where and how I can buy that harness and bucket for blueberry picking?
I really don't know. We got these from Michigan Blueberry Growers Association years ago. I tried to Google but nothing came up like these.
Hello mummy pls l am a farm worker seeking for fruit picking job any one for me there?
Thanks for asking, but harvest is over here in Georgia.
The laugh at @0:44 kills me.
May i ask if the amount of berries eaten by birds is significant? How do you scare them away?
Some years the amount of berries eaten/destroyed by birds is very significant. We use various methods: automated bird distress calls, sprays that burn their beak, loud cannons, gun shots in the air. Some farmers have used the mechanical flopping guy like you see at car lots, sliver ribbons tied to irrigation pipes sticking up, fake owls with moving heads. Any and all of this works for a while until the birds become accustomed. It is a battle for sure.
@theblueberrybarn I have 9 bushes so I can manage it by netting but I always wondered about farms. Seems like quite the battle. Thanks and I wish you good luck!
@@uefamikep Thank you.
You didn't mention how the farthing tastes My favorites are Chandler and blue crop. Both have a strong taste and are a bit tart.
The Farthing is a good, sweet berry. It is softer in nature than the Kee Crisp and not as sweet, but as a whole, I like the Farthing 2nd to Kee Crisp.
I recently purchased some land with 6 acres of blueberries on it. A lot of it has gone a bit wild from years of not being pruned or weeded. What would you recommend for getting the weeds and such between the bushes out and to help keep them from coming back? Is there a good way to create the raised beds after the blueberries are already mature and in place? Or would I have to pull the plants out to get the bed raised up?
It is very difficult for us to make an informed response since we don't know what the fields look like, but I would suggest for getting weeds and bushes out between rows is to use a product that is a glyphosate herbicide. You can spray the weeds with that it won't damage the blueberries. As far as beds, it would not be wise to pull plants out and then replant on a bed. You could dig out the middles and make them lower than the plants, but you would have to be real careful with water flow. You don't want to have a big water puddle in the middles so the water would have to be able to leave quickly.
@theblueberrybarn thank you for responding. I though about herbicides but i was concerned about it getting down into the soil and killing the blueberries. Is there a product you would recommend? The soil seems to have really good drainage i think i onky have a foot or two of topsoil before its sandy loam.
@@Eville.. Round Up can get down in the soil over time and damage your plants. but glyphosate herbicide is different. It doesn't get down in the soil. It is good at burning down the weeds and anything it touches. So you don't want to get it on the blueberries. There are many types and brands. Just look up what is near you and be sure to read the directions.
Bought some from Northern California, the clam shell said they were “premier” variety. They were some of the best tasting blueberries.
I am glad you enjoyed them. When our berries are packed in Georgia, the variety is not placed on the clam. If you ever see Kee Crisp, be sure to get it!
Well said!! I got no crop at all this year in middle TN. The super cold and windy week in January killed the fruit buds. Building a stockade fence around the whole plot this Fall to block the winter winds. Better luck next year!!
I’m starting my journey into blueberries. Starting to hill my rows. How high should I go? I’m in Ontario Canada so our plants may differ from yours. Love your videos. We are starting late in life but want something to do in retirement. 60 is coming fast. Lol
Hello from India . we have started blueberry cultivation in India last year .
Those blueberries look so ripe and juicy
They look so delicious! And you pick faster than me for sure... I'd be too busy eating.
Great video and gorgeous blueberries!
And very nicely filmed 🥰
@@perennial-garden I was hoping to make you proud!
Fascinating piece of machinery. Thank y'all for all the information...keep the videos coming please
Fascinating!
Awesome!!
Much faster than picking by hand, I'm sure :)
Absolutely!
❤ thank you
my bushes are self pollinating and we dont have many bees yet. how can i INSURE that my blossoms will turn into berries? no one on the internet can answer my question and i am super frustrated. live in central indiana and my 3 bushes are loaded with blossoms. i sure want them to turn into berries but how do i help???? please respond
My blueberry bushes are all self-pollinating. That means they don't need insects correct? I have tons and tons of blooms but how do I ensure I will get berries when the flowers fall off do I add magnesium to the soil what can I do to ensure I will get berries?
How many blueberry plants are needed to provide for a family of 4?
That is a difficult question to answer. A fully mature plant, 4 years old, (certain varieties) can produce up to 6-8 pounds of berries per plant. But there are so many different varieties, soil condition, weather issues, bugs/disease etc. And how many berries can each person consume? So I really can't answer this question with very much accuracy.
We have three blueberry bushes for our family that are about 8 years old. We got 24 pounds this year. Pruning and fertilizing helps.
I will also add that in 8 years we have lost 3 or more new blueberry plants. So, over plant and aim high. Things will happen, but you’ll get further toward goal.
@@colemansines9722 Good advice, I planted 2 blueberries directly in the ground last spring (my first time) and they died. Next spring (southern hemisphere), in September, I will plant 4 blueberries in large pots in acidic soil in full sun. From what I read it should work, I hope.
Great video. Starting to grow blueberries this year and I’m using this channel as a guide. Maybe one day I’ll have a small farm on the family land
I hope we can be of help to you in your growing process. A family farm is such a blessing. Best wishes!
Im in located in Central CA and I bought some blueberry bushes and the seller didn't know the variety they are. But, they are just now starting to flower. Are there some varieties that would do this, or are these weak or difficient? Thanks
More than likely they are a later rabbiteye variety.
Thank you. Really enjoy your channel
Fascinating!
Love this channel!!!
Thanks so much for watching!
I've watched like 4 of your videos. I just moved to South Carolina from Seattle and I want to start with just a few varieties, I have the pink lemonade rabbit eye variety now. New climate has me stumped. If you could only plant a few varieties in this climate what would you choose? I am not looking for storage or shipping, just looking for the best taste. I would love to hear from someone who has experience in this area ❤
I would suggest a Brightwell for another rabbiteye variety and then for excellent taste the Kee Crisp and Legacy in the highbush varieties.
I would suggest a Brightwood rabbiteye and then in the high

I live up North on sandy soil. It's quite acidic. Can I use pine tree needles as a heavy mulch to keep the soil acidic? I get different answers from different people. P.S. I never cared for blueberries until I started growing them for my hubby. Now, the bushes are covered to protect from little birds and big birds. 🤣
I believe you could use pine needles in a heavy layer because we use pine bark.
