  • I take a quick break from 'Excavator Week' to show you an innovative and practical product I found for installing my Garmin Mini 2 Dash Cam in my Toyota Tacoma. Dongar Technologies is an entrepreneurial young USA company that has designed a product to make Dash Camera installations simple, quick and clean. They call it the SimpleUSB Adapter. Hope you will check it out!

    After a near miss yesterday on the QEW I'm looking at getting the same dash cam (Garmin Mini 2) since it has a small footprint and probably is adequate, video quality-wise. However, I've been leery about getting and installing any dash cam, due to the thought of having to snake wires along the headliner etc., or having wires hanging down. You've provided a great solution with the product from Dongar, so I'm gonna check it out to see if they have one compatible. Really appreciate your review as it's straightforward and helpful.

    I had a camera when I first bought my 2019 Honda Ridgeline but I had the cable hanging down to the 12v connector, a real pain. Within 3 months it broke at the power connector. Great video - especially the first part! We're about the same age and it sounds like we had similar experiences growing up in our neighboring countries. Somehow I got to be the "go to guy" for installing stereos and CB radios for my buddies. Lots of crawling upside down under the dash to run wires, etc. My not-so-slim, old body can't do that any more - even in a vehicle the size of my Super Duty! LOL!

    This a very well made video. For Parking Guard for the Garmin Mini 2 (Parking Mode), you can buy an OBD2 connector for $49 USD. I just bought the Garmin Mini 2 and the OBD2 connector to hook up constant power to my 2022 Porsche Boxster GTS. It will not drain the battery much since it draws very little power and you can set up the length of time it stays on when you turn off the ignition. The Porsche dimming rear view mirror cannot use the Dongar, and I didn’t want it switched anyway so I can use “Parking Guard”. I located my OBD2 port right under the dash to the left of the steering column. Try it. You can make a companion video.

    Some of those streets look very familiar. Eglinton, Kipling..... Are you going to add to the You Tube videos you find when you search for "Lousy Drivers in Toronto?" You now have the tools for that. My first car was a 1964 Valiant I bought from my Sister when she took a job in the Virgin Islands. It was equipped with a whopping 170 cubic inch slant six, four doors and push button drive. It had an AM radio only so I bought one of the little FM radio adapters, put a speaker on the rear deck along with a fader switch. It wasn't stereo but it was okay for the time.

    I have a Tacoma similar to yours and I love it. However I wouldn't worry much about the battery drain. Your tacoma performs many automated charcoal canister fuel leakage tests without your knowledge. Most of time it happens hours after you have driven it. (I hear mine early in the morning when walk into the garage to head to work) With that said I wouldn't want any unnecessary load either, but it would be a nice option if it could be turned on or off easily for trips to town and not when parked in the garage. I do also wonder if power is always available at the mirror, because the garage door opener built into the mirror works with or without the ignition key. Looking forward to the review on that dashcam.

    I just would like to have something cleared up. The Garmin cam came w 2 power cables , both long. Are you staying the Donger technology adapter INCLUDED THE “Shorty” power cable ?

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning. Yes. The Dongar came with the two shorties - one was a USB- C ( which fit my Garmin) and the other USB shorty had a different end on it (sorry can't remember the type). Thanks!

    Is there a way to view a dashcam such as Garmin mini2 on the touch screen of a vehicle ? I can’t find any info on this. It seems like such an obvious thing to want to do. Thanks for the video very well done !

    What is that big box on your windshield, on the right side of your rear view mirror?

    • @GPOutdoors

      Hey DR. It is a Transponder for our Private highways - it allows me to drive on those highways and it automatically charges me per km when I use them. Cheers!

    When I put mine in I was able to quite easily hide the power cord until I down to the bottom side of the dash. Unfortunately it's outdated but the cameras have very good resolution. Just a pain to get the footage, need to remove the chip and sometime I need a replacement chip if I can't get the footage off right away. It's better than nothing and it rewrites every 8 hours or so. Always make sure you have a rear facing camera as well. I'm going to court tomorrow as a witness against a moron that was passing on the shoulder and generally being an idiot. He came from out of now where to ride my ass, couldn't figure out where he cam from though. Then I checked the footage and he passed 1 or 2 tractor-trailers on the shoulder to get behind me. Karma got his ass because 4 miles up the road he was sitting on the shoulder with a flat tire.....LOL.

      Hi Dee. I sent them a note . I bought it direct and was able to purchase it but I see now that the check out page only allows the USA. Perhaps send them a contact message on their website and I am sure they will get back to you. Good luck!

    Hello, fellow Albertan here. I'm looking to get the same setup you have. Did the shipping include taxes/duties when you made the order or did you have to pay that to pick it up?

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning! There were no duties on it but there were Customs Fees and Canadian taxes applied to it when it was delivered ( but those costs are not included in the shipping costs when you order it from Dongar).

    Gord, your neighbours (Canadian spelling) must wonder why you put on overalls in the city to install a dash-cam. Your Tacoma is just like Andrew Camarata's pickup where he used a saw on his dashboard to do an install. Same as your truck, only different.
