Haven't kickstarted, but did help a guy push-start his H-D. Sketchy as anything. When it finally caught, he missed a chain link fence by an inch and we could hear him blow through every stop sign and traffic light in Attleboro! Pretty sure he made it home. Pretty sure haha
Ahaha I have had many times stuck in the woods on vintage dirt bikes where this was exactly the case -- get that puppy started on a woopdie and then gun it home 🤣
Hilarious video😹 Thanks ... I had a Yamaha XS 650 back in the olden days... It was more of the standard model without the buck-horn bars, it was fun nonetheless !! Now, I drive a much larger touring machine (Moto Guzzi California 1400) 😳 See you in the next video ...
Buddy, you were awesome! Great work on learning these skills and kicking it in the butt! Justin was so much help and he is patient. The bag of cement and the bug were highlights... talk about getting distracted! Justin, thank you for the kinder language, major props man. My wife and I are sending much love!
2:35 lol all of this manual handling reminds me when i ended up upside-down outside a resturant. I went to park up and the bay was sloped. in my lack of skill i misjudged what was happening while i pushed it into the bay... then I tried to put it on the centre stand (which was an idiotic move when you're on a slope). the bike predicatably started rolling forward. when I rushed to get the front brake the bike tipped away from me and pulled me headfirst into the car on the other bay. thankfully there was no damage to anything other than my pride... great video as always :)
Oh man! Glad to hear you were not hurt, but I feel the damaged pride deeply in my soul. The MINUTE after my dad and I finished the Sportster, I rolled it out and wanted to start it "like a man" and the compression stroke on that XLCH 1000 was so strong that I lost my balance and dropped the freshly restored bike right into the garage wall and fell through a bunch of trash cans. Dented the oil bag and chipped/bent the front fender -- never tried to kick it again and haven't missed it!
My first bike is Jawa 350. It have no electro starter, only kick. And I will remember my first trip on it, when I bought it, for all of my life I bought it 50 kilometers away home, and that trip took about 3 hours. This is because of poor technical state of motorcycle. It even hadn't a battery! Gladly I have a friend with a car, so every time when the engine stopped, we connected a wires from car to ignition system, started it and continued the ride. Also it was my first real ride - there was before only four test rides, then two rides to get a driver's license And engine stoppen quite a many times The motorcycle have two cylinders. At the beginning we've lost one of them. Just to save a time we decided not to deal with that problem and continue the ride Then we started to periodically lost a second cylinder. In infinite attempts to start it again I curced everything in the word. Many times the engine had started, had worked for a kilometer or less and had stopped again, again and again. I wanted to throw it in the road and forget, burn it in fire. My legs was hurt, both, because I changed sides periodically. It was a nightmare in the day Eventially friend decided to pay attention to the first problem, and found one decoupled wire in ignition system. I even remember the sound, I heard how it decoupled 😂 How much time, strength and nervous I could to save if I paid more attention to this sound But in that moment nightmare has gone. Second cylinder continued not to work sometimes, but that thing didn't bothered me. Seriosly, I tried to start the engine with no working cylinders. What can be easier than to start it with one working? And believe me, with working one cylinder it rides way more better than when there is no cylinders at all And I was happy. Sometimes both cylinders worked, and I was much more happy That was a hard ride. There was much more obstacles on the way in that day, I told the story only about kickstarter There was even more problems later to start the engine. Remember about it's state? But now it have new pistons, ignition system, carburator. There is no problem to start it now, just give it portion of fuel (and sometimes clear the plugs, 2T engine as is) And I love it Now I have a second motorbike. Younger, faster, more powerful. It is 4T and have a starter. It have cool luggage system. It looks like the time to say goodbye to my old friend has come. But the new one have no such story, I only bought it, paid some more for technical service and it just works perfectly. Not as with the first one, it have some part of my soul and I don't want to loose it Sorry for bad english, it is not native to me
oh my gosh what a crazy story 😆 I know what you mean though, we love them anyway, even after everything they put us through. Your english is great, what is your native language?
this story is incredible, thank you very much for sharing your experience. I too have felt the desire to set a bike on fire when it seems like all the work you put into fixing an issue only leads to more issues, but that's actually part of what makes finding, restoring, and riding old bikes so much fun.
Jawa's are crazy. Didn't see too many of them over here in the US. I remember a friend of mine had one with a sidecar. To use the kickstarter you flip the gear lever over and use that as the kickstarter. Also if I remember correctly it was a 2 stroke engine too.
That was fun to watch. I'd add, remember to turn the choke off after the engine warms a bit. I always thought the XS650 was so cool: a "Japanese Triumph." And you're now able to kick it to life: more of an intimate relationship than pushing a starter button (especially if it draws blood).
oh good tip/reminder! I have forgotten to kill the choke before, I realized it quickly though cause the bike was not running good or sounding good. haha I still dont know how I was bleeding but there was blood on my arms and legs 😂 that was a long day
First XS650 I owned was a '71 XS1-B. First year with electric start was the '72.... '70 and '71 were kick only. If you rode it, you had to kick it. But that was the norm for all big twins back then. Norton, Bonneville... all were kick bikes. Enjoyed the video!!
lol this might be my favourite video so far! my 86 Honda xl600r is kick start only and it was a learning experience. my dad had the same bike IN 86 stolen twice from the garage, but the thief couldn’t start it.. so it was just up the street. 😅 I was so looking forward to this season of videos.. you both are killing it!
haha what a great story, thats one way to protect your bike from theft... make sure its hard to start 😂 I've also heard of popping off a spark plug when storing the bike cause some dummies wont even know to check that when trying to steal it. Anyway, thanks so much for watching:) I think this is my fav viddy so far too.
Thanks for the laughs. You two are great. Im jealous of your editing skills. Great job kicking your bike. Thankfully I only had to kick a bike once to get it home. Fixed the issue and thankfully haven't had to do it since. Also congrats on the 652 subs!!
Hello from South Australia. Great stuff ! Nothing beat the joy or feeling of accomplishment of kicking over a bike and having it burst into life👍👍👍.Now you are a "real" motorcyclist. Next time try it on the centre stand as it's so much easier that way. Now if you want to be a real biker try kicking over an old Hardley twin or British single. Being an old fart and learning to ride in the late 70s and buying old bikes I sometimes had no choice as the electric starts didn't always work on them and my first bike didn't even have one. I also remember when your bike first came out and they sold for Aust.$1699 brand new.
Hello to South Australia, it's so cool to hear from you and thanks for watching my channel! We took off the center stand when we rebuilt the bike, I can imagine it would be easier and more balanced trying to kick it on that stand though, oh well! I'll have to work up to kicking a twin lol! Wow $1,699 new 😲 amazing. Thanks again:)
Well Justin has the knowledge and experience you can tell. If you still keep that wonderful xs650 you /I mean you two/ should make second part: How to push start a bike. It will be another fun! Sold my 1992 Virago 750 to move to a modern adventure and fuel injected bike, but still love these older Yamahas...
these two are the coolest couple ever. i totally felt their enthusiasm when she kicked it. i was all like, "yeah! hell yeah!" she is the cutest little badass ever and he is a great teacher with clear and patient Instructions.
Great job. Great videos. Yea had to Kickstart about everything I rode growing up. From rd400s to kz900s kx 500s. Sadly got a brand new condition kx500 at the shop but nowadays I got bad legs and I'm now 60. Hence I look for my big healthy buddy.
Justin's audio is so funny to edit. Half of the stuff he says I don't even catch in real time 😂 still don't know where that blood came from lol thanks for watching!!
You did a great job!!! re: last time I kickstarted any of my bikes, I believe it was my 1976 Yamaha RD400 since the battery was dead. (BTW....I usually wouldn't move it to level ground but would keep the front brake on so it didn't roll while kicking it.)
my ironhead has both electric start and a kick start, but I am bot as brave as Bugzy and I am too scared to try to kickstart my XLCH unless it is an emergency
I needed to see a politically neutral video this morning. Your pretty happy face talking about motorcycles is a sunbeam I needed to blow against the clouds of my disappointment. Thank you.
Great job, there's nothing cooler than kick starting a bike!
thank you so much, it really did feel so cool!
Nice!! Justin, that explanation @ 6 minutes was excellent! You DID IT, Bugzy! Yeah, this was a great, well-done video all around!
I'm so glad you liked it:)
Surprisingly it's easier to get useful information out of my mouth when I'm not swearing like a filth-demon.
