From the trailer I thought it was the classic dystopia where good rebels fight against bad oppressors. I was wrong, it's much more. This is not a story of ideologies and causes, it is a story of human beings, a story about life, the causes and effects of love and hatred. Solid, well told, engaging and mysterious. Hooked after 30 minutes. One of my favorite TV series.
Yes, I went on to watch the whole series. It is very good.
This is so much more than that, this is about Japan & Germany Stealing the winning of the war. Flipping the script as to how our world would have been if they had truly won the war.
The film they have their hands on shows proof that the war was won against the Germans & the Japenese understanding that the whole war was about these 2 countries partnering up to own the entire world. If Germany & Japan were not defeated this is perhaps what our current existence would be.

a little interesting odd fact about this. This is adapted from a book written by Philip K Dick. Dick was best friends with Tim Powers before Powers was ever published. Powers wrote On Stranger Tides which was made unto the movie Pirates of the Caribbean many years later.

Just watched the first season in two days. WOW, what a great tv show. I am recommending it to all my friends. I love how there is no nudity (minus a brief second) and it's not full of bad language.

This is a very well done show. The actors are almost all very good. The Nazi officers are very well played(when you hate a character they have don't a solid job...). Sure some stuff is far fetched, but for the most part, I was very pleased and was eager to see the next episode. looking forward to Season 2. Oh, and the actress playing Julianna is one fine looking lady. I've always thought women look better in hairstyles and cloths from the 60s.
Great series so far but one logic mistake: The series uses subtitles whenever someone speaks in german or japanese. Yet why would german or japanese officials that talk to each other use english? When the US and Britain lost the war and Germany and Japan became the biggest and most influential powers of the earth, it would only be reasonable that in their sphere of influence their languages become the universal language.
Because it is in America and this is not that long after WO2. They cant just force all americans to speak german or japanese without any generations having passed. I think this is why english is still the dominant tongue

That´s plenty of time to implement German as a compulsory subject in schools and expect from higher ups to have learned it during that time, especially given the cultural fanatism of Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany and the fact that the US had a rather large part of the population with german heritage that still spoke german.
In Germany e.g. English became a compulsory subject in 1955. Before that only the highest educated Germans could speak English. So the common men on both sides would have troubles to understand each other.
Really surprising how few people have read, let alone heard of the book. Seriously Philip K Dick is to Sci-Fi what Tolkien is to fantasy. The Man in the High Castle is probably his finest work. I haven't seen the series yet but am tempted to give it a go, considering it is based off one of my favourite books.
It is also one of my favorite books. The series are not bad but it don’t make justice to the philosophical aspects of the books.

Brilliant idea for a tv show. Beautifully shot. To create that world and to set it in 1962, interior and exterior (along with computer special effects) it is not easy - you can tell it's a high budget. Where it falls flat (through the first two episodes) is the writing and acting. I want this show to work so badly because I love the concept so much. I hope the script and acting gets better - this still has the potential to be a masterpiece.

Now obviously Canada wasn't nearly as big of a target in WWII but Man in The High Castle never says anything to do with Canada. In his book it stays the same for Canada but I hope they say what happened to Canada

well after the Nazis conquered The US, Canada was thrown into chaos and anarchy. thus began The Great Moose War of 1946 where Giant Mutant Moose developed by the Nazis attacked and ravaged the country. nearly 25% of Canada's population was killed. And that's not even the worst of it. in 1948 after Canada was finally recovering there was the The Syrup Drought of Canada, which we all know is Canada's main fuel source. And again anarchy and chaos ran through the streets of Canada's public. during this time the Nazis said fuck it we don't Canada. and that's pretty much what happened to Canada. I believe during the events of The Man in the High Castle they are governed by Cybernetic Hockey players.

I've just finished this, I can't reccomend it enough. Excellent on so many levels.
Hitler really didn't have a desire for world domination. He wanted to unite the German speaking countries and regions into one greater German empire. He also didn't want war with Britain or France. A realistic post war would see Germany as the dominant European power, since Germany beat the Soviets there wouldn't be any challenge to German dominance. However I believe France would've gone back to a sovereign Country and the United States and Britain wouldn't be occupied.

SPOILERS: The "Grasshopper" reel is a reference to the Grasshopper nuclear tests during WWII, so I'm guessing that the reel shows a nuclear test. The Germans and Japanese are worried that there are still nukes that a resistance can find and use. That's my assumption based on the Grasshopper reel

The most important question this series probably answered is that it didnt change much, whatever the outcome of the war.
is highly improbable this would happen, consider the man power was needed for the D-day, how complicated was Iwo Jima, even in the case US was weak as the book says would be impossible to take a beach located 5 000 miles, the supplies needed for such operation would need million of Germans, Germans needed to fight against the Russian. And for Japan was even worse, despite how great was the Japanese army it wasn't as powerful as the german. even if Germany had invented the atomic bomb and demand US surrender, the task to fully control the US would be a nightmare just think every American would have arms, it would be a forever guerilla battles. Germany never consider invading the US neither Japan, Japan wanted just to control Asia as Germany Europe.
+Charles Anguiano well maybe they are discussing an alternate history where Russia as already been defeated... see when discussing the Soviet victory many people forget that Japan never got involved.. they could focus all their forces on pushing Germany out of Russia.. but what if Japan had invaded Russia from the other end.. effectively surrounding Moscow and forcing a surrender.. once they had been beaten then the Germans and Japanese could focus their entire power on the U.S. which would have been a colossal undertaking but with Germany's advancements in technology would not have been entirely impossible.. just very difficult

What makes this show and the book so eerie is that it _could_ have happened. By the time the war was almost over, he had already conquered most of Europe, some of Asia and some of Africa. If he hadn't decided to attempt double-crossing the USSR, with the combined forces of the Nazis, Japanese, and Russians, they would have had a very good chance at winning the war. Not to mention, the USA wasn't the _only_ one who had atomic bombs and nuclear weapons. The Axis powers could have used these to nuke the USA, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Canada. Hell, if a WWIII were to break out, and the Nazis were to come back, they would have a WAAAAY better chance at winning considering how advanced warfare tech has advanced.... Holy hell, that's a scary thought....

Rufus Sewell's brilliant acting of playing the Nazi officer reminds me of Al Pacino's acting. He's by far the most interesting character in the show. I like his character more than Joe, Juliana, or Frank.
