I have owned 4 Papillons over the last 30 years and loved them all dearly. I have never seen a video that more accurately describes them than this.
This video perfectly nails the small print. “They are smart BUT you have to find their motivation to train them”. All the points you made are dead on to mine.

Have my boy 16 years, never had potty training or barking issues. He has all his teeth as well. Dentist was amazed.
My boy had been raised by 4 large cats.
Great breed! Excellent in training for service dogs, too. I have seen them work well with Border Collies in herding.
    Brilliant doggos.

This breed sounds exactly like me as a person and I can’t imagine a better breed for me.
I mean I got dental problems (soft teeth), long curly hair that requires a lot of care (my hair even looks similar to a papillon, I’m yappy, I’m energetic, I’m sassy, I am not a physical affection person, and I’m a big person on human contact and socialization. Oh yeah and I’m smart as hell

I'm generally not a huge fan of very small / toy type breeds, but Papillons are my favourite in that category by far. Extremely intelligent, beautiful, sweet little dogs which are bursting with personality and mischief

I don't have a papillon but they sound exactly like my husky. The part where they sit in the direction they wanna go, he did that 30 mins ago lol. Stubborn, yappy, too smart for their own good..grooming being essential. Them actually being cats.

8:32 - turning it into a "pampering session" - lol omg - nope - brushing my Papillon is like a whole game.... the brush is the enemy....
this said, I don't have to do this any where near as this video would suggest. Yes the knots happen behind the ears sometimes, and the clumps are usually sorted with a pair of scissors. And even when he has jumped in a dam or rolled in mud - most of it just falls off naturally once it dries, and what doesn't is sorted with a quick shower and a bit of a brush. I have found him incredibly low maintenance to be honest.
gosh i love the little guy - and so smart.

So amazingly accurate!!! I have a dachshund-pap mix who looks like an elongated papillon. He's not like a dachshund at all - everything on here applies except he's strangely silent and only barks at the doorbell. We have definitely noticed he's more like the cat than like the dachshunds we're used to. Also, we tried to just let him out in the yard to do his business which has worked well for all of our dachshunds, but found out pretty quickly that he needs at least two walks a day, one of them for at least a mile or two (we got him from a rescue, and his previous owner said that he couldn't handle her being away 12-13 hours/day, and "was a handful". No. He just needs activity and human interaction!

Our Papillon cross was a smart little guy and even though he was a senior when we adopted him. He could still run like the wind. He was protective and even grabbed a skunk by the throat on the front porch one night. I taught him to “talk” (little growls) for his food, but he’d bark when I said, “Ok” to get in the last word. When we visited my daughter’s family he even snapped at her Pitbull cross when she wanted to play with him. He loved sleeping in my lap under an afghan in the Winter. Really miss that little guy, Reddy.

My almost 15 year old Papillon hits so many of your points.
    1. Super energetic (did agility for fun when he was young) and would go on 5 mile walks with me
    2. is still the neighborhood watch dog, barking at any car, leaf, squirrel, or person invading his territory, which is our entire street
    3. Is a velcro dog who wants to be near me all the time, but not a lap dog at all. Next to me, not on me.
    4. Super intelligent, but only follows commands when he wants to, as he is...
    5. Stubborn as all hell
    6. Dental is great, even though he's never let me brush his teeth. He gets a dental done every year now, used to be every 2 years when he was younger, and still has all his teeth.
    7. Housetraining was actually pretty quick, though he was 4 months old when i got him. I taught him to ring bells on a shoelace hung from the doorknob and he picked it up super fast. Unfortunately, so did my mom's half Maine Coon cat, who would not stop ringing the bells at my moms house in the middle of the night, so she only puts them out now when my dog and I are visiting.
I do agree they are great dogs, just do the research so you know what you might be in for. This is a great video to show the pros and cons of the breed.

My Papillon is the best dog i have ever had. I am in my 70s have done dog showing with 2 different breeds. This dog is smart, loves to please me, cuddles and is sporty. what more could you want from a dog. He is all around the best of the best. I have had malamutes, shelties, cavaliers, collie, to name a few. This Papillon is all of then rolled into 11 pounds. Yes you will have hair near you on you and on your floors, i would never give that up He is the best. I went through a confirmation show breeder to get the best of the best.

My grandparents just got one last week because their old poodle died. She's 13 and when I pet sat her she was quiet and made a nest out of my jacket. She apparently barks when my grandpa is working outside. She's reserved, not yet comfortable enough to sit on your lap, but very friendly. She's well behaved on her leash, even my cousin's 2 year old daughter can walk her with no trouble. So just give her some time and Angel will be a happy member of the family.

My Papillon was not easy to train... used 2 years to teach him sit, and 2 more years to teach him to lay down...
I always say about my Papillon that he does not behave like a Papillon and mostly behave like his stupid. His smart enough that when other people want to make him sit he wont sit cuz he know they dont have a treat, so if have no treat that he likes (only chicken) he wont do sit or lay down. Sadly ever since he were 1 years old he been a very picky eater, he was often under weight refused to eat, castration (when he were 2 years old) helped him to eat better and stay normal weight, he is still a very picky eater he only eat chicken, treats must be chicken and soft treat (he does not eat something tough treat that most people use), and he refuse to eat the brand "royal canin" no idea why, so he eats only expensive quality chicken kibbles.
First Papillon I had (that I dont have today) did shred so much but was very easy to train tricks and everything, sadly she was afraid of everything ever since she was small puppy no idea why, like she was afraid of dogs that is bigger than her, other humans specially children, she were a 1 human bond kinda dog afraid of everyone else that dog trainers could not train on her to make her better about what she is afraid of.
I had best bond with my first Papillon since she was a very calm lap dog with her issues but i loved her personality the most.
The Papillon I have today is just very expensive since he only eat his expensive food, not easy to train, his personality is full of energy and wants attention all day and will make alot noise if its just 1 sec dont give him attention. He will run away if he see other humans or dogs cuz he loves everyone tried to train him to not run away but whatever do he wont listen, he know the call back and he does it successfully inside but outside he will run away if see other dogs or humans. Positive is that he loves everyone and try to make friends with everyone cats too, even though cat hiss at him he still want to become friends with them, he does shred so little that i dont notice any shred from him even brushing its so little.
