    Your dad is 100% correct in saying you’d have to be in a confident space in your career. Wayne was on top of the world when he released this song. He was in the middle of one of the greatest runs in hip hop history

    I can't get enough of watching someone really experiencing music I know and strong for the first time. I love how he doesn't get caught up on the language and hears it as music and expression from a different culture. Like, that he doesn't "get it" doesn't mean that there's something wrong with "it." That's dope.

    This is all lyricism and wordplay. Song structure is put to the side to show you he has metaphors and similes and entendres and every piece of creative language and verbal acrobatics that can compete with any artist out! Milli is a statement record!! The Workd knew Wayne was a serious problem at this point.

    This was completely off the cuff. A spontaneous freestyle that turned into a MEGA HIT. Wayne is up there as far as GOAT status. Your dad's reactions are priceless and genuine. The fact that you can relate shows just how far the art of rap has gone. Unfortunately, we're experiencing a plateau now. Hopefully, this disposable music that is a biproduct of the internet and lack of quality control finds its way back on course. Good stuff Kai!
    By the way, "owe you" "O U" like two vowels is a double entendre.

    • @nunya2587

      @@travishenderson9635 All of Wayne's verses are freestyled. He basically goes a couple bars at a time till he runs out of rhymes then has them rewind the track over the last bar he said and keep going from there til he's done.

    @enochabraham688 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The “owe you” is also a nod to Wheel of Fortune I believe, where you have to pay money in order to call a vowel out. And C3, 3-peat is just a reference to the Carter 3 being another critically-acclaimed addition to the Carter trilogy at the time.

    Wayne had a run between 2004-2014 where he was arguably the top rapper in the game. When he changed up his style on "Da Carter" and started using a NYC like Flow with those down south New Orleans tracks, it was over for all other rappers for a minute. Eventually, Wayne became so influential, NYC rappers starting mimicking Southern artists like him in their appearance and in even their sound.

    Two things that would be helpful to know when understanding this track: 1) it is a freestyle (i.e., completely spontaneous); 2) it is an example of playing the dozens/signifying/high-capping, a Black American performative tradition wherein a person magnifies their own persona through clever storytelling or wordplay while degrading another person's persona for the purpose of entertaining an audience.

    Wayne's been active since the 90s. He has albums before the Carter series. They're pretty good. One of my favorite pre-Carter Wayne tracks being "Tha Blues." Certainly of the time, but you can see the talent in the child. Baby (Birdman) didn't let Wayne use profanity until he turned 18, so his teenage music is expressive but not profane. Really a fascinating career.

      A fellow 49 year old soccer mom here! My favorites are the exact same! One of my favorite memories was about 5 years ago, I was in the kitchen baking with my headphones on. I was listening to and I guess singing a bit too loud to "Lollipop". I felt a tap on my shoulder and my then 12 year old son said accusingly "Mom, how do YOU know Lil'Wayne?!" I smiled and said "Question is, how do YOU know him?! You might not believe this, but once upon a time, your Mama had it goin' on!" He walked away shaking his head and later, I heard him saying to my youngest son "You won't believe what I heard Mom singing to today! She was listening to Lil'Wayne, Drake, Juice Wrld and Tupac!" 😆

    Hey Kai and Dad! when wayne says c3 3peat at the end C3 = (CARTER 3) its just a acronym for the Carter 3. 3peat means this was the THIRD Carter album in the trilogy. It sold 1 million in a week . In sports a 3peat is when a team wins 3 championships back to back to back meaning they on top. Wayne was saying his first two albums was classic now the third one (C3 aka Carter 3) will be another classic. Which means he wins again lol. C3. 3peat it's just him saying the name of the album, and saying he wins the Rap game yet again with another classic🔥
    Ps( Kai dad should react to MR CARTER. another classic on the album. He'd love it . It featured Jay z!)

    The mention of Andre 3000 of Outkast by Lil Wayne and Eminem should have led you to him by default. Shout outs are a form of respect and admiration so coming from those two, should tell you something about his influence on the rap game. Players Ball is a Christmas song that I love cause it portrays holidays from another perspective of life. Southernplayalisticaddilacmuzik is a showcase of his lyrical talent. You guys are great! Keep it up!

    The “choppa” line is a quintandre, choppa is a gun, choppa is the cops in a helicopter, he’s physically chopping the word verbally as well as finishing “a line” (verbal and written making the allusion to chopping lines of drugs). Wayne does this constantly wether it’s lines that are referencing current affairs of the times within his metaphors and similes, or cutting deep word play with diss mentality. Lyrical genius

    • @modest1989
      @modest1989 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yeah it's not that deep. He's really just referring to a gun on this one

    i think one of the most iconic things about this song is that there is i believe four different versions that were released and leaked before the album version came out many fans fight and argue to this day about which version is the best‼️

    after watching you guys react to japanese denim and as a really big daniel caesar fan i really have to recommend ‘Won’t Live Here’ that song is definitely one of my favorites from him and it’s just beautiful. there are really only two things you can hear in the song which is the piano and his voice, and the piano just completely compliments his voice and i want to cry whenever i hear it. thank you guys for the videos :)

    Gotta show your dad lil Wayne's "something you forgot" his most emotional song about his separation from his baby mama.
    Also p*ssy, money, weed.. absolutely hypnotic song that despite it's obviously crass nature is dare I say beautiful.. ok maybe not but both of those songs have a lot of musical elements your dad will be able to appreciate.
