- In this video I head from Forster to Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour in my small steel trawler Renko.
This involves a fair amount of passage planning to safely cross the bars and harbour entrances and getting trapped in Coffs Harbour for a few weeks during a big south coast low causing large wells and high winds.

Another busy video Stu, loved the navigation discussions and decisions. A successful cruise definitely requires some decent planning and lots of options that still work. Didn’t hear how you got the taco/ alternator working .
I misunderstood "Plan A, go to the bar" for a few seconds and my initial thought was that well yeah careful planning over a pint probably works

For me that is a perfect size boat for everything, it was a great restoration project and an even better cruising vessel....Cheers...
Thanks mate. I do think it is the perfect size for a work boat, which is what it will spend the bulk of ours life being. A little small for a cruising boat though, but it is great that it is possible to live aboard for periods of time in relative comfort.
The joys of coastal cruising. My Dad and his mates brought a 50ft Ocean Alexander down from Port of Brisbane to Fenwicks and they had to spend time in some ports waiting for the weather to improve. So it must be a wonderful voyage for you to make Stu. Wishing you all the best for the rest of the voyage mate
Thanks mate.....You got some good Electronics on board your boat.....l remember the days when l had nothing like that on my boat....Back in the 1060's....l was a fishing guide off shore out of Tampa bay Mirina for a while with my brother just on the week ends.....!
It is good having the gear, but also important to not fully depend on it, only use it to make things safer and easier.

Grabbing that little scooter is one smart idea, there Stu I musta admit.
It's been super handy. Just checked today on the App that connects to it and I've done 205 kms since buying it two weeks ago.

Although it is a relatively small boat still, it is nice to be able to have a fridge and sleep onboard etc.

I've been watching this channel from day dot and have really appreciated it.
I used to live at Ettalong for many years and traveled many,many a mile from there to the west coast (Darwin), to Tasmania and all around the east coast with just me and my dog on my 42ft steely (Ketch).
I currently reside in Ballina and would love to grab your lines when you get here.

This is brilliant Stu! Really well done, fantastic to watch your voyage up the east coast going past my patch on the way up. You’ve been lucky with the bar crossings so far, hope this continues for you. My local the Macleay river is one of the worst on the east coast, scary at the best of times!

Wise move not to leave Coffs that week. We saw a 35’ yacht get smash broadside on the bar off the southern break wall at Yamba that week. He nearly capsized twice, eventually making it back out and following the exact line you were given by marine rescue. A very lucky sailor!

Mind showing the sleeping accommodations and what that’s like on boat?
I don’t remember the exact video, but if you look for the first few videos of when Stu picked up Reno he does go over the berth which is located directly below the helm.
@@bobuncle8704 I do recall, but he oddly doesn’t mention the outfit of his sleeping birth often or rarely pictures it in his videos and/or cover “life on board” very specifically. Toilet, cooking, eating, sleeping…comforts and sacrifices of a boat that size and design. Etc.
I would also like a tour.
I've still got a few jobs to do to finish organising things down there before showing it again. Not showing it saves reading a 100 comments about how I am too messy for their liking.

In between Maydays and logons/offs it has been interesting watching your progress and very glad you have keeping in touch with the various Marine Rescue bases up the coast. We have a lot of very dedicated volunteers eager to ensure the safety of all boaters travelling up and down the NSW coast.

But he did run aground in the Barrier Reef. ;)
@@DangarMarine yes he was stuck there . It was at lizard 🦎 island where he climbed to its peak to view a passage out of the reef, I’ve been to lizard island, and I too climb that mountain.
He was truly a remarkable man.

Google maps is actually amazing even in the West African bush it brought me to the place I wanted within a few hundred meters
It is a great tool. Satellite view is very handy for looking at sandbars in clear shallow water.

Loving the navigation video from the now fully-operational battle station...I mean...converged Raymarine/ethernet/PC/video network.

@@DangarMarine I'm in the same kind of space with our flying club airplane; two years after a new GPS and transponder meeting the ADS-B (think "AIS for airplanes") requirements, we're removing the pneumatically-powered mechanical gyro flight instruments (and associated plumbing) and replacing them with modern solid-state touchscreen devices that have the same form-factor. This means retiring the primitive 1970s-era analog electronic autopilot with a modern one too.

After I finish my next phase of flight training and the new systems ae on board, it'll be time to think about making videos again.
The parallels between aviation and seamanship are very strong. And we flyers should do more to integrate video with the aircraft systems...seeing GPS and AIS data overlaid on live video is awesome.

Fortunately the two forward 4" scoops send a fair bit of air down there while underway. It would be interesting to see what the ambient air temperature is though.
A lot of gadgets on board. When I went to Cairns from Port Stephens I didn’t even have a tide chart on board. Only thing I had was a simple depth gauge. No cell phones only a VHF radio I think I used twice.
Yep, boaters are much more informed these days thanks to equipment like this.
30 gal.+ on a 10 hr. run is not too bad I reckon considering what some vessels guzzle. Turning out to be a nice voyage. Enjoy. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida 🌞

Some flopper stoppers off the roof of the house with a mast in the middle to elevate your radar as well. would make rough sea rides a whole lot better, and you can use them as outriggers too. Thanks for sharing, I look foreword to your videos, ALWAYS!!!.

We have bream fry's here, they make great fish sandwiches with a spicy coating, hamburg bun lettuce tomato and mayo, even good cold.

Just fillet them like a big fish, catch them about hand size and the fillets are hamburger bun size, basically free eats and they are fun to catch with crickets, worms and 1/8th ounce jigs, use all on bobbers about 2-3 feet drop from bobber.

Thanks Earl, it is an amazing amount of time to hold your breath for. Very slow heart rate! Renko has been fine to sleep on. The bed could do with being about 100mm wider, might do that in Bundaberg too.

All those screens really make Renko feel like a ship! You're doing a great job of capturing that "Man with his machine" feel, really makes me want to get out on the water.
Could you show how you make your Yerba Mate? The only time i've seen it, you needed a special gourd cup.

In 1950 navigation still worked well.
Pity we can't track your progress in real time Stu, would have loved to see you come through the Southport bar (Gold Coast Seaway), assuming you have already been in of course (you mentioned you are now in smooth waters) :-)
Having watched the renovations from the beginning, it would be great to see Renko in real life.

Thanks for taking us along in the trip...suggestion. if you can find a free audio analyser app for your phone you might be able to figure out your rpm from the exhaust note...frequency divided by number of cylinders would give r per sec....then multiply by 60 for to minutes.
Hope you find that doable and useful.
Don’t forget to divide by 2. It’s a Detroit diesel.

Well now I'm confused. Since it's a two stroke, you would only hear one discharg note for two revolutions, so wouldn't you multiply by 2...hope someone will come straighten us out
Audio might be a good way to go, optical is also very good for diesel engines. No need to divide with a two stroke. A four stroke is divide by two as each cylinder only fires once every two rotations of the crankshaft, with a two stroke (up and down are the strokes) each cylinder fires once before revolution of the crankshaft.
Glad you turned the AIS back on, or fixed it, or whatever. Way cool watching you progress in real-time. Did you get that tacho fixed? What was the issue? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just turned the exciter current off and on and it started working. Not sure if it is a fault or just one of those things. Can't find any real issue with it since.
