thanks a lot, i use abq, i have 3 of them , no problem at all, only one got broken pot after one year, i changed with a normal pot by soldering the pins and thats it. i prefer abq instead of mm4, couse is smaller all in one and fast to mount , no need to be soldered, and also i dont use to boost gain so i like to have only one pot , thats it, thanks for your videos !
Nice comparison dude 👍 totally agree with you on the MM04 booster … have them on two of my Alexi Edward’s and absolutely love them with my Marshall JVM. The MM04 brings the EMG HZ pickups to life 🔥💪 cheers 🍻
Hey guys, Someone in the COB group pointed out that the EQs on these boosts work a bit differently than the traditional graphic band EQs. These boosts work by altering the pickup's resonant peak impedance through a high cut(low pass) filter, thus the dipswitches expand the cut off starts. So i'd thought i'd let you guys/gals know. Something i was not aware of when i made the video: The "1" dipswitch on the MM-04 is actually a dummy switch that does nothing, and thus the other 3 switches work pretty much the same as with the JE-1000 and ABQ. I verified these things by reading the manuals. I apologize for not having done this before making the video, and possibly giving you guys wrong information.
From what I understand #4 dipswitch is the dummy switch. Not 100% sure tho. Great content man. Ive been playing my GP1000/Intellifex/ 1987 Marshall 1960B a lot lately lol.
@@5150forevermore I have it! From what I remember, last time I used it; it didn’t make a significant difference in the tone, so I leave it out of my signal chain so it doesn’t take up space.
@@Warhearts Nice. I almost blew 600 dollars on one lol. Good thing I asked you first haha. I enjoy the tone I have now just with the GP1000 and Intellifex so I doubt a 2400 will make a world of difference
Super interesting video and I love that you pointed us in the direction of a pedal that could accomplish the same thing. In regards to a potential setup with that pedal what amp and pickup combo would you recommend to go with that pickup since getting a gp-1000 and a je-1000 is pretty unrealistic for most people to get their hands on?
Great question, but I don’t have the answer. The other amps I own are a peavey jsx and a Roland micro cube. If I find a sound setting that comes close to that of the gp-1000 it will be on the jsx, but that amp is pretty rare/expensive too so it wouldn’t be accessible to other people anyway. I’ve thought about getting a Kemper profiler, profiling the tones already booster with the Xotic SS, and either selling them cheap or straight up just giving them away. But, the Kemper profiler is a huge expense so I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
@@Warhearts you not having a good recommendation is just a good reason to keep exploring and trying new tones 🤙😎 I play through a 5150 with a tube screamer in front of it and my axes are loaded with Duncan distortions. I get a pretty good tone outta it but I doubt I could get something close to the aydy sound
MM-04 is definitely the more balanced of the three, but I think the JE-1000 sounds better for rhythm while the leads sounds better with the MM-04. The ABQ has more highs and sounds shrill to me.

Thanks for the video! Mind if I ask what those chunky string lock screws are on your floyd, visible at 5:01?
Hey, good question. Those are the Floyd Rose Hollow points. They function terribly, but look cool so I filed the threads down and put them on the guitar just for that. I’ll do a quick video on them within the upcoming weeks.
Do you believe using an MM04 (or any other onboard boost for that matter) together with more modern, high output pickups would be "overkill?" I am looking for alternatives to the EMG passives or J50 - let's say ESP Japan doesn't want to deal with any of that. I'm interested in having the best of both worlds by having an organic sounding passive + the boost switch when needed.
Great question, Not overkill, but you definitively need to adjust/level the gain/eq on the MM04 to match the tones you’re looking when using one of these boosts with a different pickup. Also, if the treble/gain is up high on your amp, activating the MM04 can cause a lot of feedback/unwanted noise. I don’t think it would hurt to have an MM04 on a guitar since it gives you additional tonal options which you can just turn off with a flick off a switch though. Idk if that answers your question.
@@Warhearts Thanks for the reply - it definitely does! I reckon if used with a really hot pickup it could create tons of unwanted noise, so in that case the XOTIC Super Sweet might be a safer option. I like the idea of having an onboard preamp though - I hate managing pedals :)

I had never heard of that super sweet pedal
I was about to tear apart my LTD Arrow for the Alexi lead tone 😅 thank you so much
No prob! If you don’t want to pay 130-150$ for a new XSS, you can find them on guitar center’s used department for 80-100$.

hey man! great video! what did you use for tone shaping besides guitar and boosters? Amp, pedals etc? :)
The ESP MM04 sounds the same as the EMG ABQ to my ears. The JE1000 has more midrange to it it seems.
ABQ is little darker but overall very close to MM04.
ABQ has more highs.

The same settings shown on the video. Switches 2,3 on, and gain at 10 o’ clock.
