In this episode, we learn that Mary’s mom and dad’s names are “Samuel and Deanna”.. Dean learns this when he is first introduced to them in the past when he joins them for dinner.. you see that Dean puts two and two together that he and Sam must’ve been named after his moms parents.
John didn't know anything about being a hunter until after Mary died. Mary never told John about being a hunter because she wanted to leave the hunter life. Marrying John and starting a new family was a way to do that and raise a normal family.
I really do think that's why the difference in character is so jarring; it's meant to be tragic how much it changes John. And I do think there should be a difference. When it comes to striking the right balance between familiar and changed, I think they went a bit to far with changing him for the tragedy it adds. But John was someone who left highschool to join the Marines, and became a Corporal serving in Vietnam. Experiencing something like the Vietnam war at such a young age should have left more of a mark already, I think. Mary and John both having experiences with violence and traumas from a young age, and both wanting their idea of a "normal life", neither sharing their traumas that might have brought them closer because they both represent an escape into normalcy for the other; it's a different tragedy, one that I personally prefer. So I do wish we had seen more of John in John, but I do understand why they went with what they did.
I think this actor playing John isn’t as rough or gruff as John because John is still happy here. He survived being in the corps and is getting ready to propose Mary. He doesn’t have the trauma of watching his wife be murdered, of finding out demons and things that go bump in the night are real. And of trying to grieve while raising a 4 year old and a 6 month old baby, as well as trying to figure out what happened to Mary.
Yeah this really plays into the shots from the pilot really well. Mary is shown looking around when she first sees the hallway light flicker, only gets relieved when it stops when she taps it. Flickering lights is a supernatural sign. And when she sees John asleep, what does she do. Does she yell for her husband to help? Nope she runs up herself to deal with it (she's a hunter). In All Hell Breaks Loose, she recognizes the demon. We see why. In Home she apologizes to Sam, we understand why.
Dean always gets me crying when it comes to Mary. Always. I lost a parent around the same age in my life. I just relate to it, and Jensen is just...he just gets you with that voice crack when he asks her not to get out of bed. Somehow I never saw Mary being a hunter coming, but it's so clear in retrospect. Also, now we know why she said I'm sorry to Sam in season one in Home. And how she knew who Yellow Eyes was in the nursery. And now Dean knows Sam was fed the blood, which Sam never told him. It's all interesting. Also I live for all Dean and Cas' little chats at the beginning of their relationship. Edit: Your time travel Qs will be answered. Eventually LOL.

But Mary's ghost does tell Sam's she is sorry and in the flashback Azazel showed Sam Mary says 'you' to the demon when she sees him.
I think the biggest blow for Dean wasn’t changing the past but hearing that his mom didn’t want him to be a hunter. Dean always thought/hoped that Mary would be proud of him and Sam saving lives hunting but to find out that was the last thing she wanted makes Dean feel like he wasted his life
My personal interpretation is that Mary did remember to not get out of bed/to not interrupt Azazel but at that moment when she knew it wasn't John she decided that sacrificing herself to save her son was worth it. Also I love this episode so much because it reminds me that when Supernatural has good episodes it's an incredible show (this is coming from someone who loves supernatural but mostly loves it for the overarching plot and character arcs and not the monster of the week episodes)
I love the flashback episodes! I love this season! When Dean cries, I cry. If you remember, young Daniel Elkins here, is the old man Elkins, that the vamps killed for the Colt in season 1, Dead Man's Blood.
Dean's ".. don't get out of bed" always makes my heart hurt. Poor guy 🥺 When Sam cries it's so sad, but when Dean does it just hits different for some reason 💔😥
Another great episode that gives us so much exposition. Don’t worry, you’re not the only one that gets emotional when seeing Dean try to tell his mom not to get out of bed

One thing I love about this episode is that Dean loved Baby because of the tie to John. Only, the reason John had Baby in the first place is because Dean convinced him.
I think this is one of my favorite episodes of the series because when i first saw the show i was like in season 3 wanting to know more about the past and the life of the boys parents. ACK.. I forgot that this was a to be continued episode... Ya know how if you've seen an actor play a different role it takes a lot to wipe that other character away? Not this time. Mitch Pileggi wiped Skinner off the map for me with both grandpa Campbell and Azazel. I absolutely love that Dean was behind choosing Baby instead of that van. Back in the day, new parents were much more likely to name their kids after their own parents or grandparents than they are now... and there was family pressure to do so. Lots of Juniors and "the thirds" I'm pretty sure George Foreman named all of his boys George. I think it was the late 60s when that started to change. The hippy era sort of broke the mold on a lot of things.
I'm never a fan of time travel stuff in shows. Too many chances for things to get messed up. The chicken and egg thing with the car is one thing. And - would things have gone down like they did if Dean had never shown up? And it's an infinity loop thing with time travel. Just too many things to work out for consistency. But, this episode didn't bug me like time travel ones usually do. It was really good.
This was a really good episode. I was assuming I wouldn't like it at first because time travel in shows can get so annoying but it was really fun to watch it all play out. My only gripe was that I missed Sam and I hate when episodes only focus on Dean.... Cool that Dean influenced his father to buy the car. Sad that the grandparents died because of Dean. The Mary actress was great, she looked so much like her and she was badass. I love that she was a hunter and the reason she died was because of the deal she made, it makes it less sad. I think it was worth it. She was able to get John back, have her two sons and they will eventually avenge her death.
