Supernatural had the BEST twists and turns in these first 6 seasons. MAN. The way they weaved together the entire Yellow Eyes/demon army/Lucifer etc etc plot was MASTERFUL writing. Practically zero plot holes. Perfect television in my eyes. This revelation was insane. Mary was the hunter?! John got sucked in just like he did his boys? Crazy. And tragic for Mary who just wanted out. Insane writing.
Man Dean had it rough this episode. Not just because he failed to change the past but hearing that his mother say she never wanted her kids to become hunters must of been devastating because Dean has lived his life under the belief that his mom would be proud of him and Sam hunting and protecting people.
We ALL thought the hunting started with John. This is an important episode for adding to the Winchester family lore. Before this, all the information we were given was that John started hunting when Mary was killed. Here, we learn that it all started with Mary's demon deal, ten years before Sam was born. :( That scene with Dean and Mary when he tells her not to get out of bed - that tears my heart out every single time, no matter how many times I have seen it. Jensen's acting there is just breathtaking. You said, "I hate seeing Dean cry" - and I second that x1000. He is one of a handful of characters that without fail, if he's crying I'm crying.
There's a picture of young Jeffrey Dean Morgan next to a headshot of Jensen & they literally look identical like father & son. It's uncanny how spot on the casting was!
Yes, daddy John was definitely fine as hell. Mary was very beautiful. Both brothers are lucky they both came out gorgeous. 😅 This was a HUGE bombshell of an episode. Back then there was the CW chatrooms, and believe me...we went crazy. The fact that it was Mary's family that were hunters, and not John...🤯! It also made understanding John a lot more relatable. He dives deep into being obsessed with finding out about how Mary died and ends up using his marine training and mindset to follow in the hunter's lifestyle...and then to protect his boys he trained them up like soldiers because that was the only way he could deal. He wasn't the best father, but he was determined to make sure his sons could survive all the supernatural bad things out there. I couldn't feel angry at him, because he didn't know how to be who he used to anymore, after seeing his wife die like that, and then had to raise two small kids and protect them from things after them. The boys definitely got John's and Samuel's stubborn attitude. My heart broke after hearing Mary say how she never wanted her kids in that lifestyle. She never told John about the demon deal. Idk if that would have made a difference, though. And Castiel's threat..😮. I was "Oh sh*t! It's about to get real."😂

In 1971, my Dad bought me a turquoise '67 Impala!!! I loved that car! I love flashback episodes! It's so cool to know that Mary is the person who started it all. More young John Winchester, please!! I think it's a little weird that if the parents wanted to name their boys after the grandparents that they would start by naming their first son after the mother. I would think they would have named the first after the man and the second might have been a girl they could have named after Deana... And then it was a boy so they just went for Dean. The joke would have been just as funny if the grandparents were Samantha and Dean so our Dean figured out his brother had a woman's name.
