They need a heating system in the storm drains to prevent blockages and subsequent flooding. But getting local councils and their members to spend some money on innovative solutions is probably too much to hope for. Good luck to anyone who is in danger of being flooded or from bushfires. I live in Texas, where we have very little snow. When a few snow flakes fall, I run outside with my camera. I can't imagine what it is like to live in this much snow. We do have tornadoes.

Here in Mammoth, we haven't been able to see out of our first-floor windows since December. Even once the snow melts (July? August?), the trails are going to be a complete mess. There aren't enough trail workers on earth to get the PCT hikable this year. Sorry for the thru-hikers.

@@JonathanPetramala Yes, but I'm dealing with a sick pet so my schedule might change. I hiked 100m in 2020 and they asked us to get off trail due to Covid. In 2021 I hiked 2000 miles while having to dodge fires and take time off to closures and then when I went back I fell in a blizzard and broke my ribs. I'll do the while thing if I get the chance, it's too beautiful to pass up.

Y’all are so resilient! *WINTER IS ALMOST OVER!* Keep reminding yourselves 😩 lol I’d be beyond over it crying. Sending you all love. Thanks for posting these to show people like me, in the desert, what life is like up in the Sierras lol. Originally from Chicago, IL (lived there for 25 years) but we never saw nothinnnn like this 😅 and I know how difficult just _a few_ feet of snow can be 😭 I cannot evennnn imagine this!
I lived in Tahoe in winter of 73-74 and had a cross country snow mobile business. I bought it from a guy who moved on and he told me I would pay for the business in 2 weeks at Christmas. Well that Christmas we had NO SNOW at all and it didn't start snowing until Jan 6th. Wow...about broke my little business but we made it. Stopped snowing in MAY...LOL. Good Luck to all in the Sierra's...miss it. Lived in RENO for 22 years. Now PACNW.
Great job. I do volunteer PCT maintenance in the WA. Cascades. Last year I couldn't get out on my section until July 1, the latest in 9 years of work. This year looks more normal up here (not so for CA.)
climate change isn't real and i'm very sure i can tell that from this season's weather and the narrow window to the cosmos that is my lifespan (thus far).
Drought, floods, fire and big snow events have been part of California's environment for thousands of years. None of which are reason for panic. People who claim a need to "stop" climate change are vacuous and irrational. The climate is functioning normally. There is no climate emergency.
So no the climate of today is not near the climate of say the 1940s of California. I love people like you who use Historical records to tell people not to panic.... Yet you don't actually look at the Historical context of those events. In California we used to not have any of these reservoirs upstream causing mass flooding in the Central Valley. When the Central Valley floods it changes the climate for the surrounding areas. When we had Tulare Lake we had a chance at Lake Effect snow... Now we don't have that. We used to have 3 massive Lakes in the Southern valley now we only have 1 man made lake. Big difference in how that affects climate, if the climate is changing guess what the words Climate Change is pretty fitting not irrational. Your concept of looking at history is Irrational as you only look at 1 data point and not the entire History of the area.
Saw one of videos on Fox Weather on YT. I don't think I could live there at least not all the time and this winter for sure. I would say it takes a special kind person to live in those conditions.
How about heated window screens that could be installed ahead, like a wire mesh that will run a little warmth enough to melt the snow? Is there something like that?
I feel bad for the PcT thru hikers. That's painful to see them so early in the hiking season realizing there are insurmountable obstacles that can't be overcome. Sad..

@@adamsky77 I wouldn't say that...the interview was shot as a wildfire had halted months of effort to achieve a goal...and the interview was centered on asking about their specific goal and the fire...so the answers were in-line with what we were talking about...it was about them and the hike itself so they answered that way. My impression meeting them is that they were motivated, goal oriented people who would help out if needed and truly cares about the trail and nature and they want generations of people to be able to attempt the same thing they did.
Government does NOT want to leave any ROOM for FLOODING. If all the lakes, rivers, and streams dried up people would build houses in them and then be mad if the water came back.
Everyone seems to start the wildfire clock around 1980, nationally that was by far the lowest acreage burned and even recent decades are 5X less than 100 plus yrs ago. The economic potential of Cali was questioned around statehood in 1860's due to the persistent smoke.
I’ve been wondering the same thing about our snow versus rain in big Bear Lake. Seems like there’s extra moisture trapped in the middle of the snow up at higher elevations from the rain we had here in January and also in March. Trying to estimate how much more our lake will fill, and I’m counting on more than expected based on how much moisture could likely be hidden within the snow.
@@DanielMorello Ave daily temperature must be the big factor, if we get a rapid warming for a few weeks, easily could happen, then it's going to flow, flood to some degree.
Spring is here and the huge melting and flooding is coming. I know people in Mammoth Lakes that installed french drains around their places in the past to get the water and flooding away from melting snow. There will be lots of water damage and flooding in Mammoth with damaged and destroyed roofs.. There will be no where for the huge flows of water to go. Every low area will become a pool or lake without a place to go. All the creeks and steams are blocked with heavy snow and ice. Hoping there is no or very little damage from the heavy plied up snow and a rapid melting in the area. All that water is on it's way to the hot creek and Crowley lake.
One wonders how the roads may fare, for the Donner Pass Region communities featured here. Yes, there were some periods that were ultra-cold, especially during the storms that lowered the snowline to the vicinity of Rocklin on the I-80, but those particular events probably weren't of long enough duration to foster the creation of permafrost. If an event such as that occurred, there would be no subtlety to the frost's attack upon pavement and its ballast. Yet, with the way this Winter's assault is shaping up to be, when the Spring-Summer melt-to-dryout happens, entire paved roads, neighborhoods of streets, could crumble, disintegrate, to muddy, then gravelly and dusty flinders that could suddenly require the use of high-clearance-only vehicles. The finest of the finest of CalTrans' Snow Removal Professionals and their machines could be feather-gentle, as they strip down to actual pavement, but they could still nevertheless rip up big clods of pavement. Terrible roads and streets may still yet be a possibility, with ballasting subject to prolonged saturation that wrecks their integrity, so that the roads and streets could still yet end up being quite brittle, by Summer's end. Something else to consider . . . the foundation pads for buildings . . . unless those are firmly attached to shallow bedrock, they may be warped beyond recognition, with the differential settling of relatively soft soils as they progress from mud-to-dry evolution. That's another way that buildings could be torn apart, other than snow loadings upon some questionable roofs.
First off most here don't know anything about the Sierras. You can say put them underground but we aren't talking about Kansas soil, we are talking DG and Granite boulders. The Sierras are a Mountain range so yeah putting them in the ground is cool but building a 15 mile long tunnel to go from one area to the next underground makes Zero Financial and logical sense. Most these areas are not Prone to flooding, Kernville No one died and no one lost their home. We know where rivers go and flood and we tend not to build there. The flow of the Kern River is usually around 800-1200cfs during that event it was 45k CFS.
A "snowblower" designed to pull in & melt the snow may be more beneficial than to keep piling it up. In the long run, early winter "artificial melting" would freeze into ice. Ice takes longer to melt than fluffy snow. In turn, may slow sudden melt which may prevent flooding! Just a thought that popped into my pea size brain🤣
Tell the country to deal with it's over- abundance of " impervious surface". An engineer told me those were the magic words. Obviously more storm drains are needed.
A big problem is the ground water and how much has been used. I have a video coming out later today about Tulare Lake and how the land has dropped so much over the last five years. It’s significant
those people that think a continuous thru hike is not possible have no clue what they are talking about. if they dont choose to do so is one thing, but dont dictate your own limitations onto others.... they are very close minded people. and closing the trail due to snow??? no. thats literally not a thing. lol. seriously. snow does not stop hikers, just prepare better for what you are going to be dealing with. its not a big thing honestly, just bring snowshoes. Just a few years ago a couple guys did a Thru Hike of the PCT in the WINTER. all the snow, all the way. so a bit of extra snow in the spring is not going to be a issue for hikers. and they cannot actually "close" the trail. its just not possible.
I’d be more concerned about slides, but it seems like snow would make a challenging hike almost impossible…but I am not a super athlete, I about died hiking in snow a half mile up a mountain to get a shot lol
So the county and city needs to haul snow out of town like so many other places have to do. I’ve seen video from Canadian cities blowing snow into dump trucks and hauling the loads to a reservoir or river for disposal!
You need to do what they did in the old days. You need to dig trenches to divert the water to where it should go. And you all should pitch in. And donate for use of tractors and and whatever and whoever else you need. You need to get on this Now ! Speak to the National Guards too ! Before anymore Serious flooding.
What everybody now calls "climate change", for centuries was known as "seasons". There have been extreme weather events long before humans measured them. We can't control the earths rotation around the sun, which is the major cause of this. I know this isn't a popular belief now, but it's the truth. Best to plan your homes for heavy snow loads and flooding. Where I live, the government is requiring the raising structures 2 feet above minimum flood plain and no more construction in known flood plains. And no parking in the streets because the streets are designed to carry the water. Where I live, all buildings have to be one foot above the crown of the road or have dedicated water paths.

Seriously so what you say Centuries ago we also had the 9th largest lake in the world the largest lake West of Mississippi. We also had two massive Lakes in the very south of the valley. We didn't have dams or flood control that was built in the 1950s. We used to also have Native tribes here who lived in the Wetlands of the Central valley. There are barely any wetlands left the rivers dry up before the lake beds causing massive climate disruptions. We used to get Lake Effect snow not anymore, we used to have our Governor take a row boat from his house to the capital not anymore. Weird how the Climate Changed and yet y'all claim it didn't.

@@JonathanPetramala I grew up in northeast wisconsin. When snow first falls it can be very light and fluffy. Once it begins to melt it compacts thawing and then refreezing again at night or during below freezing temps. Further into spring it soon becomes a lot of ice heavy snow pack. It is more like an ice mixture than snow. You have to chip it off the pavement to take it up. It can be frozen to the very cold ground and pavement. I fear many homes, condos, and apartments will have damaged roofs, roofing rafters, structures, and water damage. I am hoping few have flooding issues in their homes, condos, and apartments this spring.
The cause of these snow dumps will repeat winters from now on, we passed a hard tippingpoint earth can't use jetstreams to cool itself in winter oceans are too warm & the thermal_mass of the planet. Instead N.America gets a groundhugging cold airmass 1200mi wide 1500ft thick oozing AK to the Gulf where it meets warmer-moist air severeweather, yet also creates the rotation to harvest Sargasso from the Doldrums to Florida. It can't change back until oceans cool. To be real, plan on snow dumps yearly, plan removal strategies, some homes can't be saved without modifying roofs & digging pits with outlets to meltwater. Spent happy yrs there late teens to early 20's, hth, best tho'ts to all ❤

An expert hydrologist recently noted that rain on snow is 80% absorbed by the snow 20% melts snow, if I understood correctly. No doubt that must vary.
Everyone seems to start the wildfire clock around 1980, nationally that was by far the lowest acreage burned and even recent decades are 5X less than 100 plus yrs ago. The economic potential of Cali was questioned around statehood in 1860's due to the persistent smoke.
The recent rains were absorbed no doubt but my eyes show me how fast snow melts when water hits it and what happens downstream can be a big problem
I’ve been wondering the same thing about our snow versus rain in big Bear Lake. Seems like there’s extra moisture trapped in the middle of the snow up at higher elevations from the rain we had here in January and also in March. Trying to estimate how much more our lake will fill, and I’m counting on more than expected based on how much moisture could likely be hidden within the snow.

I know people in Mammoth Lakes that installed french drains around their places in the past to get the water
and flooding away from melting snow.
There will be lots of water damage and flooding in Mammoth with damaged and destroyed roofs..
There will be no where for the huge flows of water to go. Every low area will become a pool or lake without
a place to go. All the creeks and steams are blocked with heavy snow and ice.
Hoping there is no or very little damage from the heavy plied up snow and a rapid melting in the area. All that water is
on it's way to the hot creek and Crowley lake.

One wonders how the roads may fare, for the Donner Pass Region communities featured here. Yes, there were some periods that were ultra-cold, especially during the storms that lowered the snowline to the vicinity of Rocklin on the I-80, but those particular events probably weren't of long enough duration to foster the creation of permafrost. If an event such as that occurred, there would be no subtlety to the frost's attack upon pavement and its ballast. Yet, with the way this Winter's assault is shaping up to be, when the Spring-Summer melt-to-dryout happens, entire paved roads, neighborhoods of streets, could crumble, disintegrate, to muddy, then gravelly and dusty flinders that could suddenly require the use of high-clearance-only vehicles. The finest of the finest of CalTrans' Snow Removal Professionals and their machines could be feather-gentle, as they strip down to actual pavement, but they could still nevertheless rip up big clods of pavement. Terrible roads and streets may still yet be a possibility, with ballasting subject to prolonged saturation that wrecks their integrity, so that the roads and streets could still yet end up being quite brittle, by Summer's end.
Something else to consider . . . the foundation pads for buildings . . . unless those are firmly attached to shallow bedrock, they may be warped beyond recognition, with the differential settling of relatively soft soils as they progress from mud-to-dry evolution. That's another way that buildings could be torn apart, other than snow loadings upon some questionable roofs.

First off most here don't know anything about the Sierras. You can say put them underground but we aren't talking about Kansas soil, we are talking DG and Granite boulders. The Sierras are a Mountain range so yeah putting them in the ground is cool but building a 15 mile long tunnel to go from one area to the next underground makes Zero Financial and logical sense. Most these areas are not Prone to flooding, Kernville No one died and no one lost their home. We know where rivers go and flood and we tend not to build there. The flow of the Kern River is usually around 800-1200cfs during that event it was 45k CFS.

A "snowblower" designed to pull in & melt the snow may be more beneficial than to keep piling it up. In the long run, early winter "artificial melting" would freeze into ice. Ice takes longer to melt than fluffy snow. In turn, may slow sudden melt which may prevent flooding! Just a thought that popped into my pea size brain🤣

those people that think a continuous thru hike is not possible have no clue what they are talking about. if they dont choose to do so is one thing, but dont dictate your own limitations onto others.... they are very close minded people. and closing the trail due to snow??? no. thats literally not a thing. lol. seriously. snow does not stop hikers, just prepare better for what you are going to be dealing with. its not a big thing honestly, just bring snowshoes. Just a few years ago a couple guys did a Thru Hike of the PCT in the WINTER. all the snow, all the way. so a bit of extra snow in the spring is not going to be a issue for hikers. and they cannot actually "close" the trail. its just not possible.
I’d be more concerned about slides, but it seems like snow would make a challenging hike almost impossible…but I am not a super athlete, I about died hiking in snow a half mile up a mountain to get a shot lol

I'd advise no back country hiking in the Sierra this summer. There will be a lot of search and rescue, guaranteed.
You need to do what they did in the old days. You need to dig trenches to divert the water to where it should go. And you all should pitch in. And donate for use of tractors and and whatever and whoever else you need. You need to get on this Now ! Speak to the National Guards too ! Before anymore Serious flooding.

What everybody now calls "climate change", for centuries was known as "seasons". There have been extreme weather events long before humans measured them. We can't control the earths rotation around the sun, which is the major cause of this. I know this isn't a popular belief now, but it's the truth. Best to plan your homes for heavy snow loads and flooding. Where I live, the government is requiring the raising structures 2 feet above minimum flood plain and no more construction in known flood plains. And no parking in the streets because the streets are designed to carry the water. Where I live, all buildings have to be one foot above the crown of the road or have dedicated water paths.

Seriously so what you say Centuries ago we also had the 9th largest lake in the world the largest lake West of Mississippi. We also had two massive Lakes in the very south of the valley. We didn't have dams or flood control that was built in the 1950s. We used to also have Native tribes here who lived in the Wetlands of the Central valley. There are barely any wetlands left the rivers dry up before the lake beds causing massive climate disruptions. We used to get Lake Effect snow not anymore, we used to have our Governor take a row boat from his house to the capital not anymore. Weird how the Climate Changed and yet y'all claim it didn't.

@@JonathanPetramala I grew up in northeast wisconsin. When snow first falls it can be very light and fluffy.
Once it begins to melt it compacts thawing and then refreezing again at night or during below freezing temps.
Further into spring it soon becomes a lot of ice heavy snow pack. It is more like an ice mixture than snow. You have
to chip it off the pavement to take it up. It can be frozen to the very cold ground and pavement.
I fear many homes, condos, and apartments will have damaged roofs, roofing rafters, structures, and water damage.
I am hoping few have flooding issues in their homes, condos, and apartments this spring.
No one is forcing them to live there.
The cause of these snow dumps will repeat winters from now on, we passed a hard tippingpoint earth can't use jetstreams to cool itself in winter oceans are too warm & the thermal_mass of the planet.
Instead N.America gets a groundhugging cold airmass 1200mi wide 1500ft thick oozing AK to the Gulf where it meets warmer-moist air severeweather, yet also creates the rotation to harvest Sargasso from the Doldrums to Florida.
It can't change back until oceans cool.
To be real, plan on snow dumps yearly, plan removal strategies, some homes can't be saved without modifying roofs & digging pits with outlets to meltwater.
