No joke, I owned a copy of this game on the DS. I had it in my DS when I took it to school with me one day. A kid stole my DS out of my backpack, and then returned the game to me because he hated it that much.
The question is do you still have the game???
No, I traded it in several years ago when I found out I could just watch the cutscenes on the HD collection.

Well if he's playing Final Mix BBS, then I'd be amazed if he finishes it in 2 weeks because while I consider BBS the best in the series the elements FM introduces in it's post game are f**king relentless.

As much as I enjoyed the story, I can never go back to this game just because of how little the enemies react to your hits, especially bosses. Feels like trying to key a brick wall; it'll work eventually by it takes for fucking ever to do.
I have to agree. The gameplay is honestly really boring and repetitive to the point where it took me 3 years just to beat this damn game. Well actually most of that was because it took like 2 years to beat the ruler of the Sky boss fight. Fuck that boss, he is the prime example of my gaming skills back in the day.
This is kinda the same problem for BBS and DDD on critical mode, Square Enix appearently forgot to make the game balanced for that difficulty. At least 2 was beatable on critical mode
Afrohawk Yeah I definitely can agree. The story was solid but the gameplay was downright atrocious to me especially in regards to combat. I actually enjoyed the CoM combat more than 358/2 and I don't even like the CoM combat all that much.

Uhh.. funny enough your other kingdom hearts videos helped me to understand their stories. but this was the first video where youre explaining the plot and im completely lost as per usual when trying to understand kingdom hearts stories
Basically, for this one, wow this reply is a long time coming, roxas is Sora’s nobody. Xion is a failed replica of Sora, (you remember replica Riku right? A clone created using information from Sora’s memories, well, Xion is a failed replica of Sora’s memories, which is why she looks like a black haired Kairi) when Sora is put to sleep in Castle oblivion, Namine (the blonde girl who manipulated Sora’s memories) needed to piece back Sora’s memories, unfortunately, those memories would be in Roxas, as Sora’s nobody. But since Sora lost his memories, those memories end up going on the fritz and Roxas wakes up without any memories of being Sora, Xion is then introduced, in the game, you spend a few missions with Xion until she takes enough of Sora’s dormant memories from Roxas to have a human form, which ends up being that form you see for the majority of the game. Her sole mission is to slowly steal power and memories of Sora from Roxas, which will prevent Sora from waking up and get rid of Roxas should Sora’s good nature inside of him cause him to rebel from the organization. Unfortunately for them, while Xion stole some of Sora’s memories, she gained a will of her own and a friendship to Roxas, as the two of them were very similar in their introduction to the organization. (How much of that is actual affection and how much is programming remains to be seen) when Xion discovers that she’s siphoning away Roxas’s power, memories, and technically even his life, she disappears, then returns to confront Roxas, hoping to either destroy him to take the rest of the memories or to be destroyed by him and have all the memories go back, either way, Sora’s awakening would then become much smoother. Xemnas reprograms Xion using devices Roxas was tasked with deploying over all the worlds, increasing Xion’s power, and setting her on Roxas to kill and absorb all his power. This forces Roxas to fight, ultimately killing Xion. Since Xion’s existence is a result of a whole lot of memory manipulation, when she ceases to be, the memories of her as an individual disappear also. Roxas merely refers to her as “her” at the end of the game, and Riku has to struggle just to remember the name Xion.
@@mr.dantastic5073 I thought by the time Roxas was created (thus b4 Sora even entered the castle) he still didn’t have any memories of being Sora. I just assumed it was like that because Sora was still alive. Not because he was losing his memories if that makes sense.

If you're talking about Marluxia, remember that smartphone game KHUX which takes place 100 years before BBS. Marluxia's somebody appeared there. Plus the plot there just went from Nomura's recommended to must watch due to important story elements appearing which might/will affect KH3.

About Xion, apparently she and Naminé supposed to be deconstructions of the Mary Sue archetypes that frequent *so* many fanfics. Naminé being a deconstruction of the Self-Insert (she's actually a sad and lonely girl who's crying out for help) and Xion is a deconstruction of a more typical sue, one who's inserted into the story with little foreshadowing and is forgotten about once the smoke clears.
In both cases, neither of the girls is happy (although Xion is more joyful in the beginning of her game) and in the end, they cause the main protagonist emotional harm, rather than enriching their lives.

This was actually my first KH game. I didn't understand the story much, but I loved the gameplay. Perhaps I'm easily entertained, but I thought the combat was tons of fun and I still felt my heart strings tugged during some of the final moments.
As I've had to point out so many times before, the "Who else will I have ice cream with" line is because Roxas has very little concept of what a friend is. What he knows is that friends are people who have ice cream together. Roxas is saying to Xion, that without her, he won't have any friends.

I was one of those few people who did 100% on the game just to unlock Sora.

@@Chad_Eldridge yeah, 100% completing BotW was just atrocious for me. The korok hunting was awful, farming items to upgrade equipment (specifically from the dragons and the shooting star fragments) was tedious as hell, and filling the compendium was an exercise in frustration. BotW was definitely fun to play through (on a blind run at least) but completing it was just horrible
@@Chad_Eldridge I know you can buy pics for the compendium, I'm just stupid and wanted to do it myself. I only bought like 3 pictures and that was because I just had no luck finding what I was missing, even with a guide.
Honestly, I envy you and others that have that kind of appreciation for BotW because it's not a "game" I care for in the slightest. What I mean is that on my first playthrough my mind was always wondering "what's that over there?" "Where does this lead?" "What can I do with this?" and things like that. However, several months after I finished the game I started over and with the prior knowledge of the game, the second run through was nothing but boring and frustrating. My thoughts were no longer "What's over there?" but rather "How much longer is this gonna take?". And without the mystery to focus on, my mind was paying more attention to the mechanical details, like I think the breakable weapon mechanic implementation was horrible, the meals were exploitable as hell, the shrines were mostly annoying, and the rain was even worse than the first run because again, my mind wasn't thinking "I have to wait to find out what's up there." and was instead saying "now I have to wait to get this shit done".
The best games in my eyes are the ones that I can return to again and again. And most Zelda games are incredibly fun to play for me. But BotW is not a game that is fun to play, it was a game that was fun to discover. But once that experience is had, the game that is left was just annoying. BotW is a phenomenal experience, but a terrible game in my opinion.

The Multiplayer is the best part of this game, you can do real cool stuff like build a pure healer or dps, just shooting guys from afar with spells etc. Offering for more play styles.
It is so cool and strange playing this game with 3 people playing as Sora Goofy and Donald.
The downside is having to gold every mission to get Sora.
But if you have a 100% game you can play all the missions with a friend, it's tough but worth it.
Dammit John. I'm in class. You know I'm gonna watch this in that one class where we don't do anything.

I feel like Kingdom Hearts as a series has the Miyamoto problem. Every game has to innovate in some forced way which is why we have card battle mechanics, weird inventory-puzzle-grids, the character swaps in 3D and more. Fortunately it didn't appear much in II so I am hoping Kingdom Hearts III will be pretty much like I and II but better.
KH3 will be very similar to KH2 but it will have gameplay elements from all over the series like Athletic Flow, Shotlocks, Command styles, better Magic, Summons, and Attraction flow (which i think is gonna replace Reality Shift). Then the new mechanics Keyblade transformations will also be included.
I think they use the spinoff games to experiment with different playstyles and mechanics, while the main, numbered entries (KH1,2,3) sticks to the formula that works best while adding the good stuff from the spinoffs on top.

I'm pretty sure no one would see this but johne and the reader you in general should be worrying what the content/product is rather than when to release it. Of course stuff like school/work is complicated so I understand it
It’s the story of 358/2 Days that really made me a fan of Roxas, how tragic his life is, how everything slowly falls apart and has to basically die in order for Sora to awaken and we see his anger and misery in not only his fight with Riku but with Sora in KHII. Everything Roxas loved was taken away from him and then some it’s a heartbreaking and tragic backstory for this character and it makes it easy to feel sorry for him especially when you go back and play KHII after this to see all of this unfold. And yeah it really does feel justified when he’s angry at Sora who has no idea of who he is and what his deal is at first until Dream Drop Distance where everything Roxas experienced during his time at Organization XIII is awful in losing his friends and home.
this is my 2nd favorite kingdom hearts game, story wise that is. And Xion precious is a baby that must be protected, I will never get over what happened to her Roxas and Axel.

The line "who else will I have ice cream with?" Is actually genius. At the beginning of the game Roxas asks Axel what a friend is and he says somebody you can have ice with. After ditching the organization he has nobody. He's really saying who will I be friends with. I think it's a really deep throw back
There are better ways to present it. It still sounds goofy and corny in the worst ways possible even with context.
Just because it’s a callback to something earlier does not make it clever automatically.

It's also worth noting that the Manga changed the line completely. It added a subplot where Roxas, Axel, and Xion all promised they would go to the beach on their next day off. Roxas's line references that instead.

I actually loved the ability panel system, specifically because it was a puzzle game with your inventory. Getting all the pieces to fit just right felt really good.
Despite what Johnny said, this still remains my favorite kingdom hearts game. Love the story and even though the gameplay is repetitive, I find it oddly addicting.

Same, I truly love this game. Just played it for the first time a few months ago, got about 70 hours into it now and trying to get 100% on the challenge missions. Plus you unlock secret journal entries for doing them so I'm still getting a bit of story!

Side games is not a thing in this series considering how ingrained Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are to the overall story. Nomura himself even calls them main entries so I don't even understand why there's a debate about this. Even the "pointless" games like Days are going to be relevant in KH3.
I'm a fan of the series, but I will not attack those who call the handheld entries side games. They mostly serve to milk the franchise by forcing in retcon by linking EVERYTHING back to Sora in some convoluted, nonsensical way or serve as a holding pattern during the wait for a full console title.
358/2 Days is a side game featuring two fan favorite characters, Axel and Roxas. Their friendship is not new. Xion serves to be the token female in the keyblade trios Nomura likes so much and whose importance outside of this single game has yet to be shoehorned into the overall KH plot.
Birth by Sleep is an exception to this since it was originally planned for the PS2 and tells and original story that references other titles without using them as a crutch to justify its own existence.

This game is definitely in my top 10 best games of all time. I loved the different attacks with different keyblades, I loved the puzzle inventory, and it's one of the few games to ever make me cry.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days was actually my first Kingdom Hearts game. You see, I never heard of the Kingdom Hearts series until I was in middle school and I saw one of my friends playing it on the bus. I later got it for Christmas, and I actually had a good time. I like being able to customize my characters in video games, so I enjoyed the Panel System. I didn't find the story that confusing because it feels so disconnected from the other KH games (said friend summarized the previous games for me, so that probably helped). I also enjoyed Mission Mode! It was so much fun playing missions from Story Mode as the entirety of Organization XIII. It was also fun unlocking the extra characters. Hell, unlocking Sora in Mission Mode is the most satisfying Game Clear bonus of all time! Yes, you should play at least KH1, CoM, and KH2 before playing this game, but it's still enjoyable!

You miss some dramatic irony if you play it first. Like when Ross's says he could only handle seven days of vacation which is a reference to two. Also days would ruin 2's story for you, as the ending wouldn't feel satisfying.

In my case I was just looking for 3d action game for my DS and stumbled in this awesome game. Going in blind actually made Roxas' story more relatable to me since, just like the main character, I had no idea who this Sora was or why Xion needed to die. I believe it served it's purpose, since I ended up playing the other games lol
I got it this Christmas!!! I played kh1 when I was young but I don’t remember much, this is one of my favorite games ever the story is amazing
Interesting fact with both Saïx and Axel is that both of them are the current voices of two hedgehogs. Kirk Thorton (Saïx) is currently Shadow the Hedgehog and Quinton Flynn (Axel) is currently Silver.

I find playing 358/2 Days before KH 2 is better, since this game takes place before 2, and helps explain the Roxas episode of KH 2.
This feels superfluous as this comment is three years old and obviously this is just an opinion, but I have just gotten into the series, a buddy bought me the entire collection and 3, the collection puts 358/2 before Kingdom Hearts 2, but I chose to play 2 first because I think prequels tend to kill impact of certain events and I think that is true here, the only reason I was able to get through the prologue of 2 was trying to put together what was going on, this game would kill the riku twist, etc etc.
Why do I feel like the Metroid: Samus Returns Review will end up taking priority over Birth By Sleep as it comes out in 2 weeks or so?

i'm one of the few people who liked this game then and still like it now. the story and the simpler gameplay just did it for me. i wish i could play it again, but i lost the game card. just left it on the couch for a bit and came back to see one of my brothers sitting in the exact same spot. I asked if he'd seen it but he said he didn't. its been lost for like 5-6 years now. :(
I know lots of people thought that line Roxas said in Xion's death was stupid but for him it had a lot of meaning. For Roxas, he thought that best friends were all about hanging out and eating ice cream together which is what he did with Xion and Axel. For him losing Xion, he ended up losing a friend, someone he could hang out and eat ice cream with. And losing a friend like that can be really heartbreaking
True. Honestly it really frustrates me when people say that the quote "who else will I have ice cream with?" Ruins that scene. If u think about it, that is ALL Roxas has been doing in thus game. Hanging our with friends and Eating ice cream together. So to him it is really hurting him inside that he wont be able to do that anymore so no wonder he wanted to destroy Kingdom eat the end.

From what I've observed, after this game Nomura's ice cream obsession dies down quite a bit. Either that or his writing team finally going got around to telling him to leave his fetish out of his game. Sea Salt Ice cream is still mentioned occasionally in Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance, but nowhere remotely NEAR to the same extent as in this game.
One subtitled version of the japanese scene that I saw had him say "Let's have ice cream again" Which also isn't really a great line, but since it was with a japanese voice i can't really tell the context. Like maybe its his way of telling her not to die, or maybe he is saying we'll meet again

358/2 was my first kingdom hearts game and it was the one that made me fall in love with the franchise. I didn't know anything of the story besides reading about it in a magazine (which checking it again is an article about re:coded) and it gave me enough of the other games to actually wanted to play them. It's probably not a good starting point but I don't think is the worse either... Anyway can't wait to hear your thoughts about bbs since it's my favorite portable kh

This was my first KH game and I will always love it for that. I remember renting KH 2 and when it had the fight with Xaldin I remember thinking "Hey I remember this part". I actually really wish they would have included it in the remasters.

This actually was my first kingdom hearts game and I never felt like I didn't know what was going on. But granted I was a young kid at the time and I had almost no idea what kingdom hearts was so it wasn't until kingdom hearts 2 that I got the full picture and realised how much I missed.

So I had a lot of TH-cam to catch up on today, so I opened a bunch of different tabs for all the vids I needed to watch. I also went ahead and clicked on every one and paused it so they could buffer. Except this one. The intro to your videos are so damn good, I ended up going back and replaying the song a few times before I watched the full thing. THAT is how you do an intro people, lol. This game holds dear to my hearts since it was my first Kingdom Hearts game I ever played. Oh, and I knew about the story of the first 3 games too. I definitely enjoyed reading the manga version of this game, since it shows a little more personality for the characters, especially Roxas and Xion.

I still remember beating the secret bosses . 1 nobody that had a shit ton of health , one of the big heartless with dreads and one huge falcon looking heartless and if you died you had to reheat the first two enemies before the big falcon heartless

I mean, isn't any story? Even original stories start out as just your OC's. And anybody writing with established material, is basically fanfiction.
As a guy who doesn't know the KH lore beyond what these reviews cover and the SGB KH2 LP, Xion doesn't seem that redundant as a base concept for the Organization as (I took from) the way Johnny kind of presented. Roxas can use the Keyblade, which is important to their plans obviously, but as noted, he's only half of Sora's power, so not as powerful. Xion essentially gives them a means to bring Sora's full power under control by having her take Roxas instead of Sora, or at the very least gives them a Plan B as noted. Also, Xion was (in theory) meant to be easily controlled without a personality or totally free will, which keeps the Keyblade in their hands without the evidently founded concern that Roxas might go rogue, which best case scenario they lose their Keyblade and worst puts his power back with Sora to outright fight them as happened in KH2.
Maybe the character's presentation seems like that of a fanfiction, but the motivation within the universe for her creation seems logical enough for me. The 14th member thing isn't that strange to me, weren't there only 13 of them after Roxas joined, not to mention retaining the XIII title after half of them died in CoM? I figure either Xion would've taken Roxas's 13th seat or they just would have become Organization XIV or something.

Speaking of fanfiction: some might even argue that Xion is a deconstruction of a Mary Sue: she looks like Kairi with black hair (at least to Roxas and Axel, others see her differently), she's the 14th member of a group that, as of the game's release, had 13 members, and she has similar powers to Roxas and by extension, Sora (like wielding the Keyblade). But, because of circumstances surrounding her creation, as long as Xion exists, she only serves as a hindrance to everyone around her, to the point where she needs to die to save Roxas. And once she dies and gets absorbed into Roxas, everyone forgets that she even existed.

Wasn't the Riku replica a copy of Riku himself? I thought Xion was supposed to be a copy of Sora, not Roxas himself, and since Roxas disappears into Sora to restore him, magic keyblade power is tricked into thinking "Xion = real Sora".
+papershadow69 Riku was a replica made from some of Riku's memories that Vexen collected. Xion is a replica made from some of Sora's memories (I guess collected from Vexen?). She was also made to steal Roxas' power, as you and Johnny mention, in case Roxas proved to be a problem.
To me, Xion is similar in terms of purpose: being a replica. My question is why is Xion different from Riku Replica in the sense that her existence prevented Sora from waking up since she's made from Sora's memories? Why was Riku still walking with Riku Replica also walking around?
I also feel that Riku Replica's story was a lot more tragic: He was a copy of the original, and he felt that he couldn't be his own person until Riku was out of the picture. Then when he died, he just gave up and died, and it was even darker in the original COM because after hearing Riku's answer, his final words were "Oh well.".

Not that I want to go back to this game anytime soon... but I ate it up when it was released, I loved it so much, I was thrilled to have "my own" KH game, since I never had a ps2.

This was my first Kingdom Hearts game. I had no clue what was happening or why and it was also the first game of this genre I had ever played so I found it very difficult. I got all the way to the final boss and could never beat it.
