Very similar to what’s done In Maryland, we call this a bush bob, go down the river and set several lines tied to tree branches, go eat, bank fish, drink a few beers then run the lines, every tree shaking has a fish, love the videos
We call em diddy poles here. Hopefully I'll get it tweaked where I can hook a fish and enjoy the entire fight instead of having to go across the river and get it. Glad you enjoy the videos man!

Have you tried using a planer board from the bank? It seems like you could use it to get your bait to the other bank in a similar way to how you used the stick / clip.
@@RiverCertified I was picturing casting it with the planer board attached out into decent depth to start. The current pulls the planer board across the water until you stop letting out line. The planer board ends up basically being a float that suspends the bait. (But the planer board would stay where you want it instead of floating away downstream like a normal float.) May be a dumb idea, but it would be fun to watch the attempt.
I must have read the same old In Fisherman article in high school. I went low tech, a toothpick or small stick stuck in the back of a loop of duct tape around my line. The bank pole style stick stuck in the bank had a standard clothes pin tied on a length of bankline that held the small stick or toothpick in the loop of tape. The bigger the bait, the bigger the stick. When the fish hit, it popped the stick/tape out of the clothes pin and the fight was on. I found that having the swivel and weight about 1ft under the water with a 18" leader for the bait helped keep everything in place until it got bit. Surface splash from the bait still happened, but the weight being under water helped act as a bit of a shock absorber to a sudden tug by the bait. For big baits a rubber band in place of the tape worked too, a big fish would break the rubber band, but the bait fish seldom did. I was fishing a creek and never used huge bait. Eventually I learned the float paternoster rig, and found that I can fish many of the same situations that way while being able to rebait easier. Gar were always an issue, especially right under the surface at night. I mostly used green sunfish or bluegill, never had a great bullhead spot in those earlier days. When I used to run bank poles more often though, we caught a lot of fish including a few over 50lbs on humps or ledges with a similar set-up. Weight a foot under the water with the bait on an 18" leader so the fish could come from below and grab it. Bank poles were like our trail cameras when learning the river, we did mostly catch and release but learned a lot about what to and not to do. On the river I fish, almost everything likes green sunfish. Bullheads are much more likely to still be on the hook when a flathead comes by, I save my bullheads for when I want to sleep and only be woke by a flathead, or for near surface sets since they want to struggle to reach the bottom so much. When I'm awake and checking baits regularly, I use green sunfish because they work great and are much easier for me to get. My best 5 rod and reel fish have all come off green sunfish, but that's more due to how much I've used them than them being better than bullheads. Anyway, hope some of that helps. I've really enjoyed your videos for the last several years and learned a lot. Glad you made your dream your reality, it's not work if you do what you love. Hope you catch a (another) giant!
That’s about the way I seen fellars out in New Mexico, and Arizona, I think, fish the smaller rivers out there, and they generally catch some pretty good flatheads like that. And my old man had a cousin that lived out in Stanton Ky and he would line cane poles or bamboo poles, up and down the Red river ( over in SE Ky), but he’d spread those poles out about 20 feet apart and put on some live bait, and just dangle them at the top of the water and jabb the cane poles way back into the bank, he’d put out about 20-25 poles and then just wait, he’s caught pretty good flatheads and channels and occasionally a Muskie, doing that.
We call those diddy poles. I tried to use it to hook the fish on rod and reel still. The line was suppose to pop out of the clip, but I guess I had it too far in the clip. I'll get it dialed in. That's super interesting that your cousin caught some muskies on them.
@@RiverCertified - yeah you’ll get that dialed in, I have no doubt about it buddy! I remember my cousin telling my dad that he had always heard there were Muskie in the Red river, the part of it that runs through Estill county, which is a big portion of it, but he never much believed it until he started setting out those bank poles for catfish and then caught his first Muskie on one, course those things have a bad temperament and will hit just about anything that swims or in the water with them, Pike have a bad temper too bud Muskie’s makes them look like a water dog or something, haha! I don’t know if anyone knows how the Muskie got into the Red, I know Cave Run lake is just a little way North of there and it’s chalked full of Muskie, real trophies too, maybe they got into the Red from there or vice versa, there’s a creek at the tail waters of cave run and it meets the red down river, so do the math, huh? Anyhow, have a good one buddy 👍👍🤘✌🏻
