I just bought a box for my wife’s 30-30 as a stocking stuffer I was a little surprised when I looked at the box and saw such a low velocity. Thanks for your test now I know what to expect from it.
This Nosler ammo might be useful to people who are recoil sensitive. Otherwise what is the selling point of low velocity 30-30 ammo? Thanks for the tests and another excellent video.
Man i love your videos. No bias or prejudice against any brand even across different calibers, just results. I loved what you said in one of your other videos where you said it may be a bad box but the fact is anyone using those for hunting could get that box off the shelf and have poor results which as an ethical hunter is not good. I used to not be a big fan of federal ammunition but after watching your videos it seems theyve really really improved over the past few years. Ive always been a big hornady and nosler fan but they seem to have been slacking in performance compared to federal and norma based off the tests in your videos. Its also crazy seeing the vast results in the same line of ammunition just changing calibers. Hopefully these videos catch serious traction so that it can kinda hold these ammo manufacturers to the fire if they perform badly or not as advertised so that they may get their act together to produce better bullet performance for what customers pay for. Not many hunters are interested in the "ballistics" of various calibers and bullets types like i am so i enjoy these very much cause it can prove that you sometimes cant just grab a box of ammo and get ethical deer/elk/coyote etc results. Fantastic videos man. No paid sponsorship, bias, b/s. Just plain in your face results. Keep them coming man!
What a bummer man, I was waiting for you to test these. Those rounds shoot great out of my rifle, definitely the best out of the 4 types I tested. Looks like I gotta go back to testing 😅
Thanks for the great video! Nosler really blew it with this ammo. Even if they had expanded "okay", which they sure as heck didn't, the trajectory would be so poor, and the energy would be so lacking, compared to every other brand of .30-30 ammo, terminal performance would be inferior to every other brand available....AND...that's even if it lived up to its stated velocity, which it doesn't. Thanks for the info. Nosler knows better and could have done better, but didn't want to, that's obvious. Do you think they would have done such a poor job with something like the .30 Nosler? No way! They just didn't care enough to make a high performance.30-30 load. Sad.
And then there are the Hornady ballistic tip rounds, when fired out of my Winchester and Marlin lever guns that either act like FMJ and just sail on through or grenade at maybe 6-8". I keep a small stash of those rounds on hand for "just in case" I can't find more dependable traditional rounds or all the components I need to handload traditional rounds for my .30-30s .35 Remington, and .444 Marlin rifles but I, and several friends that I hunt with, have learned not to trust ballistic tip ammo out of our lever guns.
Man during the shortage I got a box of these. Glad I didn't use them. Got plenty of Remington core lock now. I'm sticking to the deadliest mushroom in the woods. Great video. Always love these videos. Never seen any but 30-30 videos of yours. If you have a 243 or 35 Remington would love to see how different calibers and rounds work in the jell. Thanks again for the good content.
Thanks for this test. Very surprising results, but you have the facts. As an aside, during covid the only 30-30 ammo I saw was from the Hornady 160 gr ftx. It would not chamber in my Savage 340. Other ammo which I still had on hand fit just fine. Contacted Hornady and they had never seen such a thing. Traded it off for some standard stuff which chambered ok. Over this last black Friday found some ftx ammo at a great price so I bought a box. It chambers just fine. Haven't had time to shoot it. First box must have been defective. Happens with the best companies. Even happens with handloads. This box of Noslers might be defective. Maybe try another box some time and just give a brief update to see whether the poor showing is typical for this load. Thanks again for your testing. Gives people real world information on factory ammo.
Glad to be of service. It is what it is, the box I get gets tested, it’s not feasible to test every lot of every load in every caliber that comes off the line. I’m doing every load in every popular caliber that exists. Somehow certain manufacturers seem to have a lot more issues than others.
Nosler gonna ruin their reputation putting out junk like that. Especially when they charge top $ for all their products. Just bought their 140gr ballistic tip for my 280rem for about 50 bucks, I'll be chronographing them first chance I get. Thanks again great job!
I’m looking forward to trying these in different calibers, but as you said, it’s extremely pricey, so I haven’t yet, I might have to just to see because if they’re all downloaded like this that’s crazy (no idea if they are).
@@masonleather_outdoorsI’ve tested 280ai and 30-30 nosler with the 30-30 I got right around the same results in velocity I did have one go 2043 fps and as for the 280 tho it was 160gr nosler partitions box advertised 2950 I got around 2900 fps
Nosler ruined their factory ammo rep a long time ago. I had a round blow up in my bench 6.5 cm as soon as it locked into battery without me touching the trigger. It flattened the case too my bolt and ruined it. I've known of several other people who have had similar things happen
@@jdibben29 I hope nobody got injured, I had some nosler 308win 165gr ballistic tip that was hard to close the bolt on plus they were loaded to hot, chronograph @ almost 2800 fps from a 20" barrel. Had to force the bolt back open! Left a shiny spot on case head. Way too high pressure I won't shoot the rest of them I'll probably pull the bullets & reload them
@keithreese9636 no one was hurt but it sure scared the hell out of me and it burned my beard a little when the explosion of the primer/round came back through my bolt.
That seems to be so dependent on individual rifles especially lever actions. I have one 30-30 that will shoot virtually any factory or handloaded ammo in 2 inches or less and another that only likes a select few ammo combinations and will spray 6" groups with loads it doesn't like. '
Nosler makes great bullets. I’ve never been impressed with their ammo though. I love Nosler, but they leave a lot to be desired in their ammo. Looking at the specs of the ammo they claim a 24” test barrel. Which could account for about 100 fps but not 200.
My guess is that @ 2300 FPS, expansion would be significantly improved and gel penetration would still be in the ballpark of 17-20". Weight retention would Likely be pretty low. These bullets were engineered for handloads running normal 150 grain speeds I am betting. These factory loads are just plain weird given all we have been conditioned to expect from Nosler Ballistic Tip Bullets in general.
There is no worse insult to a man than to tell him that he has a slow barrel😂. Never been a big fan of loaded nosler ammo. Too expensive and typically unimpressive. Good video 👍
it's test like yours that warns us hunters. For a low recoil round, probably would be just fine. they sure did penetrate though. that really surprised me.
Without expansion almost anything goes deep, there are multiple 30-30 loads that penetrated to similar depths with far better overall performance. Glad to be of service!
Watching this made me wonder if my .357 Mag lever gun shooting Federal American Eagle JSP could match this watered down 30-30. Any chance you have a 357 carbine to test?
If I were a bettin' man, My guess would be that since the 30 WCF (30-30) was introduced on 1895, Nosler's lawyers are worried that a full power load might blow someones antique rifle up. I do know that right from the start. Winchester only used nitro barrels for the 30WCF rifle, but barrel steel has gone through years of development for high strength, mainly through WWII gun barrel steel became far stronger and lighter. It is the reason why there are +P versions of ammo like 9mm, 38 special and 45ACP, and the box's will say not for use in older guns, and some will download the standard ammo for safety reasons (I mean avoiding lawsuits). Another example would be 45-70.
Bought 3 boxes of this last week before picking up a Merlin 336 made in the 60s. Could have bought 5 boxes of remington for the cost of 3 of these. Guess i should have done my research first 😬
I wonder if Nosler has reinvented this load yet? The Nosler Ballistic Tip; love it or hate it, is a well designed high quality bullet. Why they would down load this one is a huge mystery to me.
I might try them in my own hand loads and get the velocity up to above average for a 30-30. I would like to see the performance with these projectiles then.
Bet we see this ammo being discontinued and sold out at half price soon. That load is an embarrassment to Nosler. This makes blue box Federal 150s look like a super premium at a raging bargain price point.
@@masonleather_outdoors Same here. Some of my best results have come from Power Shoks in 30-30, 350 Legend, and 12 ga. sabots. Accuracy is good and never had an animal lost.
Interesting. I wonder if this is their low recoil stuff and they just forgot to put it on the box. 😂 The Mrs shoots the low recoil stuff out of her lever but we are working up to the average factory loads. She’s doing good considering all she’s ever shot was a 22 and my AR.
Not very impressive… I’ll stick with federal blue box over those, and much cheaper. I did buy a box of hammerdown after watching your video, we’ll have to see how they group out of my marlin…. Thanks for sharing!
This kind of testing is going to remove the invisible factor that ammo makers can hide behind. If you bought this ammo (or other ammo) and never had a problem, you would never know that some cheaper product is actually out performing it at almost half the price.
The gel was perfectly clear, that was a brand new block. The surface is wavy because it was wrapped in plastic for shipping, after I melt them down once that goes away. There wasn’t much to look at anyway. Next batch of new blocks I get I will smooth the new ones first.
@masonleather do you think that this low powered bullet would work better if they had an unstable bullet, so it starts tumbling immediately? I've seen some pistol bullets that do thay, though I have no idea if that would work in a rifle

There are things I wouldn't buy if I was swimming in money. I don't need much of a bullet to punch holes in paper or a 150 pound deer just fine.
It's a low recoil hunting for women & kids & such. So what? You can get low recoil in many calibers. Shotgun ammo also, in low recoil, slugs, buckshot. Nosler listed the velocity on the box, you bought them, duh!
