I as an American salute you Brits for your astoundingly powerful and touching patriotic hymns. No one else comes close. This hymn and Jerusalem are the most moving. What I would give to attend the spring graduation performances of the Proms of these compositions.
I am British born and came to Australia when I was 6 years old with my parents back in 1952. I have to say that this piece makes me quite proud of my British heritage and to be British born.
Rick. I’m the same. Huzzah ! I don’t think I want any other lineage and I couldn’t be prouder of my roots!! God bless the UK 🇬🇧 and These United States of America 🇺🇸!! Ours is the blood of Knights ,patriots , and heroes
My school sang 'I Vow to thee..'' for the five years I was there and this has stayed with me all my life, never failing to bring a lump to my throat. Reminds me of the loss of loved ones and those brave lads who lost their lives, in the Battle Of Britain, in fighting for this country of ours. For this reason, it is my favourite tune. ...to the end...........chokes me every time.
This was played at Sir Winston Churchill's funeral and I can't think of anything more fitting. That man was England, without him I dread to think what would have happened. RIP Winston. God Bless you Sir
Look at all history from all sides, Churchill is not the man, as portrayed by the UK, his most famous speech , he didn't even give, too drunk to do it, he was a just representation of the group that rules the world today, Vlad the Impaler was a real hero , he used to want to fight the leaders himself, to save the slaughter of his men and their men, that's what a real hero does
As an American, I came to say I'm proud to be band of brothers with you my British friends from across the pond.. We will always stand side by side with our motherland country.... In any time of need, we will support you, we will stand tall and never break or bend, but push forward for freedom we shall defend. Ready to be ferocious in battle and magnanimous in VICTORY! May God save the Queen and God Bless America, Peace be with you Cheers!!!! Sincerely, Dan from the Sunshine state of California..
Beautifully said. From the small shores of Britain, I thank my American brothers for all they have done to help every cause in the preservation of liberty. I may not believe in God, but at least I can hope that the Anglo-American alliance will live forever.
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. I am American but several branches of my family came from various counties in England so I guess it's okay for me to feel it can be my anthem, too. It's just beautiful.
I mean, given that it was not conceived as an anthem of any kind... and music belongs to everybody anyway, it's about the art and emotion, especially with pieces like these. How would one deny you feeling at home in a piece that conveys so much depth, that somehow connects the soul to all there is?
I vow to thee, my country, All earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, The service of my love: The love that asks no question, The love that stands the test, That Lays upon the altar, The dearest and the best; The love that never falters, The love that pays the price, The love that makes us unduanded, The Final Sacrifice. And there's another country I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, Most great to them we know, We may not count are armies, We may not see her King; Her fortress is her faithful heart, Her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently, Her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, And all her paths are peace.
Actually this piece (when used as a hymn tune) is called 'Thaxted'. Possibly better known as "I Vow to Thee My Country" but honestly the words of that are horribly bombastic, the music is far better on its own. And it's also much better alone than in the Planets 'Jupiter', because in that Holst has book-ended it with some incongruous orchestral fiddling that clashes with the mood. But by itself it is, I think, the most beautiful and moving piece of music ever written.
I can understand you very well, although I am not British (I wish I were), this music is so inspiring and majestic! I heard this hymn for the first time in a very good film called Another country (1984) and it seemed so wonderful that I began searching the internet to find out what it was. One of my very favorite pieces of music/hymns. I've loved this since I first heard it played at Winston Churchill's televised funeral, at my grandmother's home, in Indiana, USA. Even as an American, I have always thought of this hymn as patriotic, but the older I get the more the second stanza means to me. Where all "her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."

As an American, I have immense respect for Great Britain and the United States equally. We've both had rough days, but that's how countries work. And now, I want this pride and patriotism for our countries to come back.
Like many people sharing comments here, I’m invariably reduced to tears by this moving work of Holst. This arrangement is especially powerful, given that it accompanies the archival film of Winston Churchill’s funeral. For we who so admired our fathers and uncles returning-or not returning-from the war against fascism in Europe, and barbaric aggression in the Pacific, this music is not just another TH-cam moment. It is elegiac, epic, anthemic-a wistful hymn of gratitude to a generation that risked everything for us, their kids and grandkids. It even records for many of us the survival of a free humanity, with all the tear-brimmed sentiment that deserves. We can see the evil posed by Trump and Putin because their brand of evil is not new. Anyone moved by this music must embrace its importance in the recurring struggle against the new Hitlers, the new Mussolinis, Francos and Hirohitos.
I'm not British but I will play this song at my funeral. The world needs more leaders like Mr Churchill right now, true leaders of the character of mind and masters of strategy!

I first heard this melody while playing a recording of Holst'sThe Planets. My reaction was that a great western film should have made this its theme. Only decades later did I discover I Vow to Thee My Country, and that at least two Protestant hymns have been set to this melody. I would not dare have this played at my funeral, unless I had been in combat for the British Services.
Today with death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96, after a lifetime of public service that dates back to World War II, this hymm takes a new meaning marking the end of an Era.
I have seen that video too. It's truly beautiful and masterfully constructed. The timing was superbly sympathetic to the music. It comes together as a rather emotional video.
Being British by blood is about pride, dignity, humility, doing the right thing, helping those in need and all the unique things that give us the right to call ourselves British, no matter where we are in the world our home will always be England, we carry the pride of England in our hearts the cross of Saint George in our minds when we travel, so if you are British hold your head high, we always come through the storms.
+Ben Bruce The present course we are on, it will be doubful if Britain makes it into the next century as a Nation, it will be just a distant memory, you can thank the Yanks for this, and succesive Governments who have pandered to this Narative, why people on the other side of the world should have any bearing on our lives is beyond me, Thats why we should all vote to come out of Europe, We don't want to be the United States of Europe, look at the State of the US, do we really want that model, the US are going backwards socially, they are going back to the Dark ages, don't let them take us with them.

Everyone forgets that the British are patient. You can push and push a Brit... until you overstep the mark and push once too often... and we'll respond; in a way you really don't want to contemplate.
What I like most about this song is that it is a solemn patriotism. It is a measured pride in one's achievements, not an overblown pride like so many songs are. It recognizes the immense sacrifices so many made to make it happen. It recognizes that there are still greater things out there. And it recognizes that one should strive to make one's nation better, not simply be complacent in how it is. It doesn't matter if you're left-wing, right-wing, centrist, or none of the above. It doesn't matter if you're pro-EU or anti-EU. This song is for everyone. It is more than just pride and patriotism; it is hope, sincere gratitude, and a recognition of one's own responsibility in continuing to improve. Also, if anyone dares start a trollish political argument in the replies to this comment, well...you make me sad. Now step aside, Sir Internet Knight.
I cried when I first heard this in Battlefield V because it was played at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales and what is even sadder is that it was also played at Charles and Diana's wedding. I can only imagine William and Harry's pain of losing their mother.
I've a confession to make: I was brought up on a NW England council estate in the 60s. Yes, we had a flag waving street party for the 1977 Jubilee, all that, but it meant nothing to me. Here's the real confession - I scoffed at it all. I'm still not a royalist but given the same oppourtunity I wave that flag till my arm falls off. You never know what you have till it's gone.
If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream-and not make dreams your master; If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!
This is literally the best version of this song you'll ever find.

Nice arrangement. This hymn is part of the OST to the Korean drama - My Life Again. The music fits nicely and proves this hymn is definitely loved internationally.
This piece makes me cry every time I hear it..
Just been reminded of this wonderful piece of music, so find myself here! October 11th 2018
It does something to me! Can’t explain! I love it so much and always have, my fav piece of music ever. I’m British, but not quite as proud as I used to be!!
Hello to anyone reading this. Whoever you are where ever you are.
Such a beautiful piece! It gives me chills every time.
RIP Elizabeth II
You were long-lived with a reign to match. It really is the end of an era.

This will be one of the first, if not the first song I can seriously say that I would like to be played at my funeral.
***** I'm an American and I plan to have this tune at my funeral but the words will be of a Lutheran Hymn. Beautiful music and the lyrics of "I vow to thee my country" are tear inducing.
Absolutely and joyously gorgeous.
I am not British, but hearing this piece makes me want to pledge my sword to her Majesty the queen!!!
It makes me want to pledge my heart and soul to that "other country...where her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."
@@edwardmcilwain2139 so you want to become a Buddhist?

R.I.P to our wonderful Queen🇬🇧❤️
A masterpiece of music.
wow, its beautiful!
omg an Argentinian who isn't talking smack about Britain and the war, but instead being kind towards us? you my good sir have just changed my whole opinion on Argentina
FABSF BR united kingdom has a beautiful culture, i have been in london and its a beautiul city, many argentinians don`t hate england, maybe there grudges because of the war and the islands but no hate
***** no, what happened is that the falklands were from spain, and when we get the independence, spain gave us some territories, one of this territories were the falklnads, the only lands that argentina conquered were the patagonia and the chaco, that were under the controll of native americans and paraguyians, but i am not worried of this islands, because nowadays our country has more importants problems inside, our president is destroying our country :/
***** On this week, the news said that england send more forces to the falklands islands, but dont worry, argentina will not declare a war, our army is a piece of shit and our economy too, the president is not so crazy for declare a war, i think. But do not worry, its impossible a war nowadays
nicowish1 I hope that England hands them back some day. Bless her green and pleasant land.
Thank you for everything, Queen Elizabeth. You can rest now.
Holst composed Jupiter and used the refrain in this song himself
Very smart
The intro to this tune is one of the most powerful pieces I have heard. Please publish it.
Makes me think of my Grandfathers especially fighting in the first and second world wars. Miss them tremendously!
Today with death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96, after a lifetime of public service that dates back to World War II, this hymm takes a new meaning marking the end of an Era.
Uma magnifica interpretação musical de um proifundo sentimento Nacional
this is my favourite orchester song
I have seen that video too. It's truly beautiful and masterfully constructed. The timing was superbly sympathetic to the music. It comes together as a rather emotional video.
2.25 makes it ALL worth it in his symphonic arrangement. From neighbours and family in 🇨🇦 Canada to the UK 🇬🇧.
I challenge anybody not to be moved by this piece of beautiful music.
Always proud of British heritage been in Australia since 1965 but will always love England and Thou to thee is England to me
The tune to one of my favourite hymns in Lutheran Service Book: Hymn #941 We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God.
beautiful, beautiful. We used to sing this in highschool and i still love it even though I've never been to the UK
I'm not British, but I think second verse of this music is one of the most beautiful funeral song for all mankind.
I will always be proud to be English.
+John Lee english but also european
Me too John. God Bless you mate
No Jim,John said "Proud to be English" he never mentioned European and had no need to. He is an Englishman. And by the way..England has a capital 'E'
Abnormal Guy: Thank God
Well said Mate, English till the day I die. That's not racist, its being proud of your country and your heritage
I sincerely hope so.
+Nolan Swadds Maybe to you, but that doesn't mean it's the same for everybody.
+Ben Bruce ...I believe the peom that made I Vow.. was about Britain and not the usual exclusive England. Scots wa hey!
+Ben Bruce Man... Unfortunately I'm not British, but this text of your almost make me cry. Really love and respect Queen's country and people! Keep going on the right way, British!
God Bless you Ma’am,
Till we all meet again,
This great Eden of ours which we are blessed to witness and duty bound to cultivate and protect; may the garden of human happiness and well-being forever flourish, and the shining light of liberty and hope guide us. Providence wills it!
Well this is relevant now
Glad to hear you're enjoying it. You might be interested in listening to some of the other music from the game too. Although not commercially available apart from the game, you can listen to the other pieces on my site.
Very moving. Heard the hymn last night on Downstairs Upstairs. Thank you so much.
Best version I have heard
A beautiful and moving hymm written a century to honor the tremendous sacrifice of young men for Britain and the Empire in the Great War.
I love this so much, it's the reason I keep playing the British section of the game. There are several more musical gems associated with this section of the game too.
True the music comes from Gustav Holst’s suite ‘The Planets’ specifically Jupiter but the lyrics are in fact from a poem called Urbs Dei by Cecil Spring-Rice.
Thank you for your informativeness and interest.
Why is every pice of music refered to as a song a song is a peice of music that is wrtten with words to be sung by choirs or soloist either at a sporting event during a recording session or events such as the proms orgaised by the bbc during the summer thanks for reading ferretman
Absolutely great.
Now I have a reason to play as Elizabeth! Too epic not to pass up now
I am not aware of the orchestra that is playing but this particular version is from a game called Civilization V and is composed by Geoff Knorr and Michael Curran. If you wish for more information I believe that Geoff knorr has a youtube account under the name 'KnorrMusic'.
From the U.S. hello from across the pond, here's lyrics:
I vow to thee my country all Earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect the service of my love,
The love that asks no question,
The love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best,
The love that never falters,
The love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice
... ... ...
And there's another country I've heard of long ago most dear to those who love her most great to them that know,
We may not count her armies we may not see her king,
Her fortress is secure and her pride is suffering,
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths of peace.
This is the brave's lullaby, and the cradle of the brave's soul
This is full of a unfathomable admiration , and immeasurable emotion, and comfortable to the ear and the mind
Everyone forgets that the British are patient. You can push and push a Brit... until you overstep the mark and push once too often... and we'll respond; in a way you really don't want to contemplate.
"Is it leaving?"
--Gandhi
Is that why you're a minority in your own country now, Briton?
This promotes spiritual uplift and awakening, and activates the soul,
Magical
Absolutely breathtakingly sublime.
Oh!
Great days when you shone brightly and filled us with longing and joys
We will not forget your great and shining days
Would you be interested in a trade agreement with England?
+Shar Thulovaas pleased to meet you!
Do you mean the United Kingdom? M.
Very well.
Would you be interesting in a trade agreement with Enola Gay?
Yes obviously.
Magnificent Arrangement ! Thank you for posting this. Is this avail available n CD ?
I cried when I first heard this in Battlefield V because it was played at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales and what is even sadder is that it was also played at Charles and Diana's wedding. I can only imagine William and Harry's pain of losing their mother.
Just bloomin wonderful ! Love to know more about the picture ? Cheers Geoff..
awesome!
RIP ELIZABETH THE GREAT RIP
I never knew the theme of the song, the composition/melody is amazing 👏 😍 🙌
British related or not
Matt Black, Gustav Holst was British, he was born in Cheltenham, England and died in London, England.
Bouguereau's painting a soul brought to heaven
Wonderful....
I have instructed my wife to play this at my funeral :)
She said she cant wait O_o
Might wanna find a new wife it that was her response.
Hahahahaaaaahaaaaaa almost choked on me coffee!
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!
I come from the Land Down Under, and I have the highest of respects for Britain. God save the Queen!
Gorgeous.
Je te voue mon pays
toutes les choses terrestres ci-dessus,
Entier et parfait,
le service de mon amour;
L'amour qui ne pose aucune question,
l'amour qui résiste à l'épreuve,
Qui repose sur l'autel
le plus cher et le meilleur;
L'amour qui ne faiblit jamais,
l'amour qui paye le prix,
L'amour qui rend inébranlable
le sacrifice final.
Et il y a un autre pays,
J'en ai entendu parler il y a longtemps
Très cher à ceux qui l'aiment,
le plus grand pour ceux qui savent;
Nous ne pouvons pas compter ses armées,
nous ne pouvons pas voir son roi;
Sa forteresse est un coeur fidèle,
son orgueil souffre;
Et âme par âme et silencieusement
ses limites brillantes augmentent,
Et ses manières sont des manières de douceur,
et tous ses chemins sont la paix.
