How Do Tap Timers Affect Flow Rate?

  • Yesterday, we had a customer reach out to let us know that their sprinklers were not popping up.
There's a bunch of reasons why this happens and after working through each possibility we could not see a reason for this other than a loss of either pressure of flow. The system was running through an Orbit B-Hyve Tap Timer.
We took this opportunity to find out how our tap timers affect the flow rate out of a garden tap.
We tested a Hunter BTT Bluetooth Tap Timer and an Orbit B-Hyve Bluetooth Tap Timer to see which one came out of top and to see if a change of tap timer would resolve this issue for our customer.

    Hi there
If you don't need a fast flow rate is it necessary to have a low pressure tap timer on a low pressure system? ...or can you use a standard tap timer

Hey Peter. Sorry for the super late reply. I missed this question. Have you sorted out your tap timer? I don't actually understand the question.

Does the BHyve have some type of internal restrictor that could be removed? The one I have feeding a few pop ups is useless.

Sadly there is nothing more you can do. They're just very restricted.
If you want a better flowing tap timer look at the Hunter tap timer www.waterpro.com.au/shop/hunter-btt-bluetooth-tap-timer

So how did you resolve the pop up issue? Use a different timer? I have the same issue....

Split the system across two lines or change the nozzles to low flow if it's an option.

Is there a top timer tha does not restrict pressure

The Hunter BTT restriction is the lowest. www.waterpro.com.au/shop/hunter-btt-bluetooth-tap-timer

I'M PISSED OFF LIKE YOU CANT IMAGINE BECAUSE THESE DAMN TIMERS CUT PRESSURE IN HALF MAKING MY MILNOR SPRINKLERS NEARLY USELESS!!!! IS THIS DONE ON PURPOSE OR SOMETHING?!?!?

I don't think they make them drop flow on purpose. I think it's unfortunate collateral damage from making them fit a price point many desire.

@@waterproau I gotta tell ya, if that's the reason, I couldn't think of anything more counterintuitive because of the money it cost in lost work, seeds, moss and top of the line Milnor sprinklers that aren't covering half the advertised area because of these timer issues, which disallows you getting proper coverage for the area a particular person may be dealing with. I'm seriously tempted to take this timer apart to see exactly what it is thats restricting the flow, it may be as simple as drilling out a ball-valve.

The restriction us caused by the path the water passes through being so small.
