After 2 hours of doubt and frustration, I came back to the computer and found this video. It worked first time! Handle out, 12 turns, handle in, remove lock cover. YES! 2006 Jetta TDI rear drivers side door.
I am indebted to you. This instruction video of your's was perfect. My door was sometimes really difficult to open because the wire that the little clip that goes into the door handle to release the door, has been stretched through use, so I moved clip on the end, out a couple of notches on the door handle, and now it is working perfectly. I could never have got access to it without your instructions. If you ever find yourself in county Tyrone Northern Ireland, I'll be glad to buy you a pint. Thanks man.
Fantastic Charles! 2016 MK7 GTI I only used -5 turns- for recessed screw. Also recessed screw was T15 while black screw on right was T20. You are a national treasure for the family of VW owners. ;>)
Top tip, the release mechanism can become seized. Mine had and wouldn’t release. A couple of firm taps with a soft-headed mallet directly on the lock (or blank in my case as it was a rear handle) freed the rotating steel section allowing it to release the lock/blank.
Used this video previously for a caddy I was repairing and it worked perfectly, being some time ago I just watched it again to refresh as currently repairing a polo door..!! Needless to say I give it a 👍

I wish that I had watched this one first. I didn't count 12 turns. I ended up dropping some sort of retaining clip down inside the door after pulling out the cylinder out. Now I probably need to take the whole door apart to get the dropped part back. Then I need to find a lock cylinder repair kit. You did a great job. I didn't.
Like you, my lock would not remain within the unit. So I removed the door panel, window and the door lock actuator. Then I could remove the door handle backing plate from within the cavity of the door. The problem is the locking ring which rotates as you adjust the T20 screw. You caused the locking ring to fall out of the backing plate. You need to remove the backing plate and either replace the unit or refit the locking ring. NOT really difficult but requires multiple hours.

I’m embarrassed to as, but I turned the retainer bolt on the cylinder too many times, and that little clip fell down into the door. I’ve retrieved it - any tips on how to put it back in place?
Stupid question but, will the interior door pull still allow to open and close the door with this removed? Pulling the handles to have them repainted and figuring I'll just keep the windows down to be safe?
This is a very usefull video ,but how can i fix a door handle that doesnt go back in place it just stays outside and i have to close the handle manually by myself to close the door! any tips on how to fix it?
Working on a my Golf mk5 front passenger door. T20 bolt is loose and cable is out. The keyhole nub piece is out too. But just cannot remove handle. I have tried sliding and pushing both ways. Any more force would break something so i have left it. I have found that even after retightening the the T20 bolt, the nub piece can still come out if i pull on it. The handle itself is the only thing preventing it falling out. So something is clearly not right but i followed the instructions in the video exactly. It looks so easy in the video but my handle will not come out.
Hey..... Would you please make a video on how to put it back nice and perfect... Coz the lock ring inside the door keeps popping out off the groove whenever am tighening it.. Thank you..

Hey Charles, any chance you'd know how to take the handle out of a 2013 Beetle? I really only need to remove the door lock cylinder to transplant it to a nw door. Thanks!
Yes, the T20 somehow releases the lock, and you can pull it out. My difficulty, like others here, is securing the lock back in, because after putting it back in and tightening the T20, it comes out again, the handle doesn't return to the fully closed position and the cable slips out of the adjustment channel.
after taking off my door panel 2 months ago and putting the lock back on. the lock works fine but the handle would stick out a little bit unless i tapped it. it was really annoying, this week i tried tightened or loosening the set screw and it didnt work. i looked into the latch nope, needed wd40 though. and i looked at the cable behind the inside handle maybe i put it back on wrong no. until i tried thise tightening the set screw WITH THE HANDLE PULLED & it worked

Naglis Gr. I just went to the junk yard and got all new mechanisms cause 3/4 of mine were broken anyways. And redid all the door mechanisms and now my handles are fine woohoo. So tedious and annoying though. Thanks to the previous owner for not knowing how to put things back together after painting the car. Now I’m just trying to figure out the hatch on my golf. 💆🏻♀️
You should not blindly follow this guide in its entirety. I did 12 turns on my VW Touran and everything fell apart inside the door. Very tricky to re-assembly. I tested after following the official written instructions, which say to to only loosen until the locking cylinder is loose. Which turns out to be only about 4-5 turns in my case. So my advise is, hold the handle open, ½ turn at a time and check if it comes out. This way you for sure wont loosen it to much.
What happens if you go beyond the 12 turns and remove that release screw? Mine is stripped and won't accept any Torx fit, and my door lock cylinder tends to pop out anywhere between 1/8" to 1/4" (it's the kind with no key, just a smooth surface). I'd like to replace that release screw, or at least get out the Dremmel and make slots to accept a standard flat screwdriver. That's always a go to, if the screw isn't that hard to work on. In the mean time, please let me know what happens if that release screw is removed completely. Thanks, and thanks for the great video!!!
@@winzeee It's been awhile since I worked on it. I never did go beyond the 12 turns, and got my door all taken care of. Just wish the entire car would not have chosen to nickel and dime me soon after :( Prices for parts and repairs started to turn into a nightmare, so I had to sell it. I would love to get another one, an automatic, but in better shape
For the life of me i CANNOT remove my door handle, it seems as if there is a screw holding the front part to the door. Any ideas with this…mk5 Golf R32 (uk) I have done everything that all the videos say but it’s like it’s bolted to the door 🤷🏼♂️
I tried this on my 2006 jetta front passenger side door but mine won't come out. The door handle does not stay out a little like the video shows after 12 turns either. I've tried turning the screw from 9 to 14 rounds and still nothing. Any suggestions?
What can one do if the screw holding the lock is actually messed up - in my case looks like the head is missing and the remains of the screw are visible :/
I did exactly how you said but it will not move at all. 12 times and holing the door handle open at the same time. So to me it doesn't matter if the screw is there or not. The lock will simply not move. The only solution as I see it is to get a new door and change everything
Thank you for your answer. The only issue I'm having is rust. So I'm trying to separate the outer door skin from the door itself. Maybe I messed it up myself. The first time I screwed about 12 times but did not hold the door handle open. The lock moved a bit but didn't come loose. Since I couldn't get the lock to come loose I tried screwing it all the way out (It's possible because my screwdriver is magnetic and can hold the screw). Now it seems the lock has decided it doesn't want to move at all
BTW I figured it out. If you end up screwing it too many turns like might have done, then you end up bending a part of the mechanism that releases the door lock. The mechanism works like a big round disc with some tabs that prevents the door lock from coming out. So to release the door lock this disc actually needs to be turned. That's where little screw does its job. It pushes to a part of the disc and makes the disc turn. But if you screw more than 12 turns that part bends and the screw no longer pushes anything. I wonder how VW came up with such a weird system
Hey I wanted to ask you I replaced a little rubber piece on my power window on my vw passat and now the door won't open from the inside what could be wrong I know I didn't brake anything on it
I’ve been following your for years. My Passat door handle stopped working. Now fixed thanks to your video . I’m taking on a corrado 1989 project and putting a Vr6 12v aaa into it. Trying to spend the least amount of money. What does the engine require that would be done while engine is out

Did you manage to put it back?
Great vid however my door wont open from the outside help! Ford Galaxy mk2 car is.
VW Golf IV 1J 1.4 - twelve it is! Thanks!
Dear Eng. Do you have a video for door handle with Keyless click?
My car have it and I'm afraid to disconnect the wire
Thank you very much !
I tried this on my 2006 jetta front passenger side door but mine won't come out. The door handle does not stay out a little like the video shows after 12 turns either. I've tried turning the screw from 9 to 14 rounds and still nothing. Any suggestions?
does the screw can fall after the twelve turn?, or is just held in place by a few threads
great tips greetings from mexico jeje
It doesn't, but the clip can catch on the lock and cause it not to come out, or to jump out of the retainer and the entire thing comes apart.
Hi can you do the same way for a 2008 kia amanti?
What can one do if the screw holding the lock is actually messed up - in my case looks like the head is missing and the remains of the screw are visible :/
I did exactly how you said but it will not move at all. 12 times and holing the door handle open at the same time. So to me it doesn't matter if the screw is there or not. The lock will simply not move. The only solution as I see it is to get a new door and change everything
It really depends on why the door is having an issue. Someone could have messed it up before.
Hey I wanted to ask you I replaced a little rubber piece on my power window on my vw passat and now the door won't open from the inside what could be wrong I know I didn't brake anything on it
Thank you so much, really helped me fix my broke door 👍👍👍
Awesome. Glad to help
I’ve been following your for years. My Passat door handle stopped working. Now fixed thanks to your video . I’m taking on a corrado 1989 project and putting a Vr6 12v aaa into it. Trying to spend the least amount of money. What does the engine require that would be done while engine is out
Do the chains for sure! Most anything else can be done in the car. I’d also do a solid inspection to be sure it’s good
Will do, I enjoy your videos. Keep making them. Please check out my videos too, on my corrado 2.0 16v
Hello there . few screwdrivers. can you tell msz
Does this same method work to remove a vw eos doorhandle as well?
What if you overloosen that screw? Is there any way to tighten it back down and get the lock cylinder to stay put?
Like you, my lock would not remain within the unit. So I removed the door panel, window and the door lock actuator. Then I could remove the door handle backing plate from within the cavity of the door. The problem is the locking ring which rotates as you adjust the T20 screw. NOT really difficult but requires multiple hours.
