My current headsets volumecontroll constantly screws up the balance between right and left audio, I sat here constantly trying to fix it until I read this comment, damnit
naihanchin Kempo I usually use headphones but lately i havent been since i got a big ass subwoofer from best buy.it was on sale, and bass is wonderful.
i guess my tentacle porn is what you consider horrible and degenerate "fetishes".. noted :) but seriusly though.. a fetish is just that youre attracted to something thats outside regular intercourse.. like i love sexy legs.. or girls in high heels look hot.. ect. its just our nature to find some things attractive that others dont care for, or feel appalled about.. i have a friend who keeps hitting on overweight girls.. ill never understand his taste for it, but i dont go and tell him its disgusting -.- ... and why did you mix prostitutes into this? that is an entirely different beast.
Make sure you have a quiet pc if you really care about the audio and you want to get a pair of open audiophile headphones. With open headphones you can hear pretty much EVERYTHING that's going on around you. I have a Cooler Master Seidon 120v CPU cooler and the noise it makes completely fucks with the music that I'm trying to listen to. Also, open headphones may be a bad choice for you if you have extremely loud family members that can't seem to shut the fuck up for 20 minutes.
I have a Corsair h80i , and 2x Gtx 970s running 100% fan speed , and my case sidepanel is off , and my pc is on my table next to my monitor and it sounds like a jet and it is fast like a jet. I have some half open Sony MDR XB700 and some almost closed V-Moda Crossfade LPs , I am not sure to get the Crossfades M100 ( There is no other headphone that can compete with the tank like build quality and the bass at once. I dont want a headphone made out of plastic , I thought about some Hifiman he400 or something like that , but only if the sound stage can make it up to the price difference the the lack of build quality
Here's an idea. Take one pair of open headphones and one pair of closed. Saw them both in half. Take one half of each and tape them together. Now you can experience openess in one ear and closedness in the other for the ultimate headphone experience.

SinerAthin Sound volume = pressure, they are the same thing. The details might make some difference but if you have two sets of headphones, one with almost completely enclosed pressure and another with an open design the enclosed ones could potentially cause more hearing damage at the same volume settings as the overall pressure against the ear drum is higher as you have "meaningless" extra pressure thats not actual sound. Thats just basic scientific common sense and there may be some finer details that change things though. Personally I prefer open ones because I can have my games at a higher volume and enjoy the sound effects and music without annoying the neighbours but I can still hear things around the house (which is usually quiet) and know if someone is at the door and things like that.

I like your quick no bull stuff. I quit most by other people because they ramble on and on partly because they have not properly prepared and partly because they talk so bloody slowly. Don't they get that most people just want the info and not to listen to slow motion blubber. Thanks.
I don't think I'll ever go back to closed design again. Open sounds so much better than closed just by the more natural sound. They're also more handy as you're able to here people around you talk. There's no need to take them off when someone wants you something.
Guys, really? All the comments about the slight audio issue? Anyways, this video was great. Techquickie always comes out with fantastic videos and this was a good guideline for a novice headphone buyer.
You forgot that there is a bit of an in-between. I have a pair of V-Moda Crossfades and they come with a vent on each side to allow for a more natural sound, however they still don't let too much sound in or out. These vents do make a noticeable difference as the sound quality deteriorates some if you cover them.
Didn't mention one of the THE most important differences to (especially uninitiated) headphone users - BASS. Closed back cans typically offer superior bass response, particularly at lower price points. Very simply - imagine you have a speaker cabinet, then take the back off. Bass is still there, but you lose (yes internet it's 'lose', not 'loose' lol )a LOT of the reinforcement and punch that comes from the cabinet. Same thing with headphones. Open is more natural, but you typically have to pay more for quality bass (not Beats bass, real bass - extended and powerful) that you can get for far cheaper with a good closed back. So open or closed, you compromise either way - unless of course money is no object.
If Techquickie, or any of the channels Linus is on, ever decides to do a scene with Linus listening to Death Metal in private, i recommend: Eternity Too Short - Decapitated Spheres of Madness - Decapitated Fleshgod Apocalypse - In Honour of Reason That should have been in the beginning of this video. Would have given the audience a hilarious surprise.

Also, closed-backs being somewhat sealed constrict the driver to an extent, whereas open-backed earcups allow for freer movement of the membrane in the driver, which I think sounds better in most cases.
Not all closed back headphones isolate well. Also, closed-back headphones are dependent on clamping force to form a tight seal to block out sound, and that can become uncomfortable. If you want isolation, IEM's are best, especially used with foam earplugs. I prefer open-back headphones as long as my air conditioner is not running alot. In the summer I used closed back headphones for this reason.

I don't have a lot of experience with headphone, but I got a open headphone (HD 555 coincidentally) as my first headphone. Probably because I want to be able to hear the phone ring, door bell..etc that requires my attention.
Did anyone else notice how on his pair of Sennheisers, not sure which model those are, they look a little like 558's, but he has the little sticky nub for attaching the Antlion Modmic! Might have been worth mentioning
Also, open headphones don't project sound to your surroundings as much as Linus is describing. At a comfortable listening level, my 558s emit a hum. If you listen carefully you can probably tell what I'm listening to, but it certainly isn't the same as having the headphones on.
Open typically has better Stage, Treble, Comfort (less heat), and are just more natural Closed typically got dat bass, more isolation than an open but less than most In-Ear-Monitors, and the backs won't get water in them as easy haha Semi-Open are Open but don't leak as much sound, but still more than ideal for an office environment at higher volumes and might let in a little less sound.

Honestly, I held off on open headphones because I was worried that I wouldn't be able to hear my game, but I bought a pair of sennheiser PC 363D's to replace my Bose qc-30's and barely noticed a difference background noise-wise, plus the sennheiser's get better quality sound

It's because of the reverberation in the ear cups as the lower frequencies bounce around the inside of the cup.

i strongly disagree with the "just as" part but otherwise you are probably right :)
Which one is better for music production?
you made me think my speakers are out of order until i try some music to test it
But Linus, open/semi open headphones have better spacial positioning audio for games like CSGO. You should try out the Superlux HD668B. They're like AKG K240 clones, but sound just as good at a lower price. Add some Velour pads, and mod the screens a bit and you have yourself some good cans!
