His training / work ethic was 2nd to none. Nobody has ever trained harder than Rocky did at Boxing. I was friends with Rocky's late nephew, Peter Marciano Jr. and he had that same winning & mental toughness that Rocky had. Peter was a smaller version of Rocky at 5ft 7in at 175lb. All rock hard muscle and he was very quick. Peter was one of the greatest Football players to come out of Brockton. He was also a great handball player at the Brockton YMCA. Rocky Marciano's legacy is not that he was just undefeated, but how he was undefeated. He overcame cuts, knockdowns, trailing late in fights, and more. His will is unquestioned. When you look at the greatest heavyweights to ever reign over the most prestigious title in all of sports, the greats are near-mythical figures that would give everything to win, men that had an indomitable spirit to go along with skill. When you think of guys like that, you think of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, Holyfield and yes, Rocky Marciano, who undoubtedly etched his name among them. So let the revisionist run their mouths about how he was too short, how he was just a brawler, how his competition was weak etc. In the end, no other heavyweight champion has ever retired undefeated and I doubt anyone else ever will.
    The one-man that did it is always standing and his name is Rocky Marciano!

    It's unusual to retain muscle mass and strength with such an extreme training regimen. There's the aerobic vs. anaerobic tradeoff. And this was in the days before anabolic steroids. Rocky usually isn't given credit for being the amazing physical specimen he was.

    • @cygnusprime6728
      @cygnusprime6728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      Well the secret isn't so mysterious. He was training to increase endurance, not to increase his bulk or mass. The most important things for a boxer are stamina, explosiveness, and coordination. His training like pounding the heavy bag, doing long intense running, speed bag, and sparring were to increase his lung capacity and to remain on his feet and keep his hands up all night for 15 rounds.
      Basically he was training like a work horse and a beast of burden at the same time. He was training for matches as if it were a marathon for long term stamina as well as making his fists back and legs strong and durable without becoming huge and bulky (which would have made him slow and lacking stamina).

    • @visearms5774
      @visearms5774 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Well this wasn't before the days of steroids but I most certainly do not believe he was taking them.
      Steroids may not have been that popular in mainstream sports before 1960 but they were around.
      Pud Galvin, a baseball player, started taking testosterone in 1889. Testosterone was later synthesised in 1935.

    • @cygnusprime6728
      @cygnusprime6728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@visearms5774 Rocky would have scoffed at steroids. He was like a monk and hard work was his religion. A very self reliant man who got to the top through sheer hard work. It was his only talent. Rocky's body wasn't even suited for athletics. Both the army and the baseball team didn't think much of him, he was very short with stubby arms, bad balance, and wasn't very fast or explosive. But he was as tough as an old boot and had that burning passion and work ethic. His style was nothing fancy, just come forward and wear the other guy down with relentless pressure. He couldn't get on his toes or use fancy counters, so he just focused on the few good things he had going for him.

    • @mskidi
      @mskidi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Depends on the person and type of aerobic exercise. Rocky's training was sort of similar to an old farmers' activity where they would plow behind an animal, they'd stop for a second to catch a breather and then continue likewise for hours on end or like a lumberjacks'. Rocky's training and fighting beat was steady, consistent and relentless. Plus he was naturally heavy boned, his hands were very heavy for his size, and blessed with stamina. He used to run 20-25 km before he got into boxing just for the fun of it.

      Rocky Marciano was one of the greatest heavyweight champions but his opponents were either washed up,very old or simply past their best.He was floored by a forty something year old Archie Moore and missed a lot for nine round to finally win on a knock out.To think that Rocky Marciano was to make it through against the likes of Cleveland Williams and Sonny Liston is miscalculated and stupid.Heavyweights of Ali era would have shoved him out of anywhere near top ten contention.Jerry Quarry would have too much for the rock .The mention of Ali,Foreman,Frazier,Holmes,Norton,Holyfield etc against Marciano would,in my opinion,be way too much for the rock.(2021.05.21-19:39-KwaMalandela)

If you haven't read "UNBEATEN" by Mike Stanton, i would recommend it. It is the most thoroughly researched biography about Rocky's entire life from the Womb to the Tomb. Rocky had a tough time against Lowery unorthodox boxing style. In their 1st fight Ted had won the 1st four rounds and a lot of people felt that he won 2 more rounds after that, but Rocky won by a split decision. One reason he was so light is he knew he had to be in better shape with his height and stubby arms. The man was a fanatic. He would have camps last 6 months or more. You white Marciano lovers 💕 adore little Rocky's high-work-rate, but 6'2" 237 lb Ike "The President" Ibeabuchi threw a record breaking 975 punches vs David Tua in their 12 round fight, more than tiny penguin🐧arms was capable of. Authentic Heavyweight Ibeabuchi would've manhandled small Rocco and smashed him like a 🍇 grape.

    Rocky was a man who was perfectly aware of his shortcomings. He trained to overcome said shortcomings. If he was shorter, or had a smaller reach, he trained to overcome that. If his opponents trained for 4 hours a day, then he would train 6 hours to compensate, he figured that if he trains more than the other guy, then he'll be on the level. If regular boxers ran 5 miles to train their stammina, then he would run 10.
    Yes, he was undefeated, but each and every one of those fights were a steep run uphill that cost Rocky sweat and blood. Rocky won not by talent, the other guys had talent, Rocky simply had a relentless spirit that never surrendered. Yes, Rocky had no style. But neither does an anvil.

    I have to say this. Especially to all those who practice boxing. Know your body type and fight accordingly. If you are naturally tall and lean this type of training wouldn't work that much for you (except the running and sprinting). Try skipping rope, double end bag and pay attention to most of your footwork and defence. Work on your jab and straight right (or left for South Paw) to utilise your reach. Rocky is short and most of his opponents are taller than him so he had to train this way to beat the wide reach disadvantage. Train hard and train smart👍

    But heavyweight in the past were smaller. Joe Louis was small.

    • @SilverSmurphy
      @SilverSmurphy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Joe Louis was small? He is the same height as Povetkin with a inch advantage in reach. Weighed 213 pounds against Rocky. Wilder also weighed 213 against Fury and hes 6ft 7!. Povetkin KO'd David Price who is 6ft 9 260 pounds and KO'd Dillian Whyte was is 255 pounds at the age of 40. Povetkin shown he can his fighters like Joshua dispite his height so Joe Louis could definitly do the same. Not to mention he would likely be on PEDS these days and would be bigger.

      Tyson was the small by modern standards he did ok was Ali better in the foreman fight or Liston? ....rhetorical question

    • @abaddontheannihilator8144
      @abaddontheannihilator8144 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stupid argument. Their are lots of successful Heavyweight boxers that aren't tall like Fury, Joshua, or George Foreman. Like Andy Ruiz, Povetkin, Tyson, Chris Byrd, and David Haye.

      @@abaddontheannihilator8144 Why did I comment the way I did again? I don't even remember. Why is it even an argument that he was small? The video says it! He weighed in below the cruiserweight limit!

    I know this sounds funny but one thing that really amazed me when reading a book about him was how he was so disciplined to his training, that he declined Hollywood model jayne mayfield when she approached him and tried to hit on him

      Until he meets Sonny Liston. It'll be Rocky's last swan song

    • @XanderMarshall
      @XanderMarshall 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @El Alfredo How? Rocky brings nothing to the table that Sonny has in spades. It's a bad stylistic matchup. And he doesn't have the physical attributes to contend with Sonny.
      It'll be exactly like how Foreman trashed Frazier.

    Rocky and Frazier would have been a brawl, Rocky and Tyson would have been murder. Someone would surely die. All three were masters of the left hook and had that short hard crunching in your face style, missing seeing that today.

    Interesting closeup of Marciano's body at 00:28 . Not too many images of him like that. He doesn't look physically imposing at all, but god help you if you were in the ring versus him.
