Check out Combat Machines, an original and wide-ranging 8 part thematic series takes you to the heart of the action of how machines have been an essential tool throughout military history.
    In August 1960, a US Navy pilot took off from Naples, Italy, and climbed to about 5,000 feet. It was a routine operation-nothing unusual for the day.
    When he leveled off, he found he needed an unusual amount of pressure on the stick. It was strange. The F-8 Crusader he was controlling felt a lot heavier than expected. It was also unresponsive. Something was definitely off.
    At first, he cursed the crew in maintenance. They had surely missed something.
    Looking around for the cause, he analyzed the control panel. Maybe a switch was off, but everything seemed OK.
    That was until he glanced outside the cockpit window. For a second, his entire body felt a shock than ran down his spine. He was flying with the Crusader's wings folded up.
    Keeping his head cool, he managed to dump fuel to make the aircraft lighter. After 20 minutes of dangerous flying, the pilot made it back to base unharmed.
    When the engineers at Vought heard the story, they were both pleased and perplexed to hear that their aircraft could fly with the wings folded.

      They got lucky the Tip vortices effect evened out the drag component and gave a bigger lift component. This would explain the flight characteristics. The ailerons not being effective and giving a sluggish performance. The winglets pushed the control sweet spot to the outside I bet.

      I was holding short of the runway in an A-1 Skyraider when the tower said they had vip transport ac that had priority for takeoff and I was blocking it from taking the runway. I decided to fold my wings to let it get by. Shortly after I was cleared for an immediate takeoff. I taxied on to the runway and began adding power for a rolling takeoff when something in my peripheral vision caught my eye. It was my left wing tip bouncing around. I stop the takeoff unfolded my wings and lived happily ever after. Guess that is why Navy pilots have to pass stringent eye tests.

    When I first went into the Air Force in 1966, my first field assignment was at Edwards Air Force Base in California. My job was personal equipment specialist which means that I worked with the pilots survival gear and safety equipment. One of the aircraft that was being tested at that time was the F 111, also known as the aardvark. We had an incident while I was there of the two man crew trying to land that swing wing airplane with the wings folded. I never did find out if it was intentional or an accident, but the result was tragic. The plane crashed short of the runway. it simply pancaked in. After hitting the ground the plane started on fire. One of the pilots got out and started to run, then realize that the second pilot was still inside the aircraft, so he went back to help get him out. Unfortunately they both died in the fire. The squadron commander brought the pilots helmet back to our shop for us to rebuild so it could be presented to his wife. It was a sad assignment since the helmet was all charred and burned. I recall seeing the aircraft sitting in the salvage yard upside down with the wings still folded, and looking quite intact except for all of the scorching on the outside. It looks very strange, and poignant.
    I don't know for sure if this is relevant to the theme of this video, but I thought I would include it anyway.

      @restojon1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for your service. I remember the F111's as I was growing up here in the UK during the 70's and 80's. That must've been quite a duty to have to carry out on behalf of that lost crew. Blue Skies to both of them, Per Ardua Ad Astra, as we say over here.

    • @geraldtrudeau3223
      @geraldtrudeau3223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@restojon1 Thank you very much for your reply. This was my first duty station, and it was quite an introduction. I arrived at Edwards Air Force Base shortly after the incident with with the B-70 crash. The salvage yard was right near the gate when I entered for the first time, and the first thing I saw what's the wreckage of the B- 70 that I had just read about. That was very interesting duty, very very interesting base. While I was there they took the second B 70 bomber that they stripped parts off of to get the first one flying and then had to replace those parts to get the second one operational. The SR-71 was also going through testing at the same time while I was there, and I had the rare opportunity to watch both of them flying right over my house in formation. I was struck by how it looked like a Swan flying formation with a Crow, at least that was the impression I got. They were both quite low so I got a really good look at them. That B 70 supersonic bomber was one of the most beautiful airplanes I've ever seen.

    In the 1970-s the Navy safety magazine, 'Naval aviation News" described an incident of a Marine pilot taking off in an F-8 with the wings folded. this was in the "Grandpa Pettibone" segment. The pilot took off from a land base and quickly realized the wings were still folded. he declares an emergency, carefully circled the field and touched down on the runway. It was then he realized he had made a second mistake. He failed to extend the landing gear.

      Why not? We have a f14 come back missing a wing. And an a10 missing half a wing...
      Fixed wing aircraft are extremely stable, with way more lift, than necessary.
      My experience is with helicopters... They do not keep flying on sheer will. I can't believe we still use them, considering how precarious their ability to fly is... Except for the Chinook. Who is still very threatened by mechanical issues. But avoids the other bull shit smaller ones have to deal with.
      Think about how many issues you might have had with a car, and still be able to drive it to the shop...

    When I was teaching flying back in the late 1970s, there was a poster on the wall saying: “An exceptional pilot is one who uses his exceptional skills and exceptional knowledge to keep from getting into situations where he needs to use his exceptional skills to save his exceptional ass.” That having been said, although it was a boner to taker off with the wings folded, all credit to the pilots who brought them back safely onto the deck of a carrier in that state!

We built the road to the crash and when the pilots showed up the investigators stood there and freaking applause them for like 10 min. I want to say it was the 1st female Tomcat pilot trainee too. During carrier operations or land operations, the air and ground support do the exact inspections of the aircraft from start up to launch. It's amazing on how many eyes are on each aircraft before it gets launched (add even more eyes on the carrier), and they still make simple mistakes. On a similar note, let's talk about how many military aircraft land with the landing gear still up.

    In 1971, this type of mishap occurred at NAS Miramar. The F-6 crashed at the onramp for I-805 and Governor Drive. The pilot bailed out and landed on the roof of a house, which contained a classmate at home sick (she was slightly injured by debris from the pilot going through the roof). I was 5 years old and counted dozens of fire trucks rolling past my school. Coincidentally in the same neighborhood several years ago about 1 block from where I lived, an F-18 ran out of fuel and the pilot bailed out. The F-18 crashed into a house and destroyed it, the pilot landed safely and was videoed talking to someone over a cell phone immediately after landing.

      No clue for Navy/Marine aircraft, but USAF F4s were manual fold and lock with the only indicator that the was locked down was a 1" post at each fold point. If wing was down but not locked and indicator was missed by ground crew and aircrew the craft would look normal until enough lift was generated to fold wing. If both wings folded aircraft could go arou d and land. If only one wing folded the aircraft would uncontrollably roll to the folded wing. If the aircrew was fast on the eject the back seater could survive the ejection, front seater would eject inverted due to roll rate and impact the ground.

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the case of the Crusader, it would be most common to happen from a land base. Early morning flight. still dark on the flight line. they taxi out there with the wings still up. And oops! Normally this was not as dangerous as it sounds. As for most planes with the wings still up, on a long concrete runway, the pilot is going to reach the decision point, realize he's not getting any lift, and throttle back to abort the takeoff run. It's embarrassing, but it is a survivable screw up. (note this differs from the situation where the wings are in the down position, but not properly locked). Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the folding mechanism on the Crusader was fully powered. As the Crusader had a very high mounted wing. It was not one ground crews could reach to manually unfold and lock the wings. This differs from the F4 which had a low wing within reach of the ground crew. Now most manufacturers would say that you could not fly with the wings folded. You simply would not get enough lift when accelerating down the runway. But the Crusader was insanely powerful. It was just a cockpit strapped to a massive engine. It had enough raw power to brute force its way into the air aerodynamics be damned. It was essentially a missile with a pilot. Actually the more impressive part of the story wasn't that he got a Crusader off the ground with the wings folded. It was that he managed to land the sucker successfully with the wings folded. Staying airborn with the amount of thrust he had wasn't the issue. It was going low and slow to land.
      If I remember this Crusader story correctly, the pilot in question eventually went on to make Admiral. And he would tell the story frequently as part of his lectures.

    • @msgtdan60
      @msgtdan60 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonyv8925 Thanks, I didn't make the eject sequence clear in my post. Your right about the sequence. It's why the front seater(pilot) ejects inverted, my understanding is the rear seater (USAF WSO) going out first would go out at about 45 degrees from vertical while the delay for the pilot would put him out at about 135 degrees due to roll rate with the difference of lift between wings. AGL at ejection would not be enough for chute deployment and the pilot would impact the ground. The USAF F4E were manual wing fold, and took 4-5 people to safely fold/unfold. Where I worked on them we often folded 1 wing when putting into a hanger for maintenance. This allowed additional aircraft in the hanger at once. Going into the hanger was about the only time we folded wings.

    In the late 80's at Clark Ab, Philippines, and F-4 took off and the wings folded up on takeoff. The back seater punched out, the pilot was ejected into the ground.
    The maintenance teams had been on 12 hour shifts , pressured to hurry wing-fold inspections. That phantom's wings were not locked back down.

      They had a F4 crash at Clark in the mid 70's while I was there. Stupid pilot didn't do his walk around and it cost him his life....tips were unfolded but not locked. There is a bright orange locking pin that sticks up to tell you it is NOT locked. Unless he was blind, he should have seen it....

    Did these planes not have wing indicator lights in the cockpit? I mean indicator lights are standard for landing gears so I would assume that they should also be standard for folding wings.
