+LSJ Shez You could even argue that Daniel Day-Lewis's work in There Will Be Blood outshines De Niro's in Raging Bull. Bob is a legend, arguably the greatest American actor who gave probably the greatest performance of any actor (male of female) in the 20th Century with Raging Bull, but in recent years he's been slacking. Does that make DDL the best actor out of Pacino and De Niro? Maybe. But these three (five, including Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando) are legends no doubt.
Not to take anything away from Bobby D, or Raging Bull; I love em both.A lot of the acclaim for the performance rests on the weight gain/loss and boxing skill, which is great. But I prefer him in Taxi Driver and Godfather 2. I don't know as I'd say DDL outshines him; I just think he has been more consistently great. When De Niro is on his game, especially as a younger man, he's electric. It's just a pity the roles that he can excel at are few and far between these days. DDL seems to be able to pluck them out, even making an average film like Lincoln above average. It's been said that Scorsese wanted De NIro for Gangs Of New York, but I don't think he would have made that role into anything as good as what DDL did.
LSJ Shez DDL's a very consistent, but he takes mighty long breaks between films, which limits the amount of great stuff we can see him in. And yeah, him as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York was a treat to watch, and probably the best performance of that year (It surprises me that Brody won it to be honest with you). DDL's a fucking fantastic actor man, no one is doubting that. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have ended up with 3 Academy Awards from 5 nominations.
It's crazy how this man standing there on this stage receiving this award is nearly unrecognizable from the Daniel plainview we saw in the movie, his voice, his gestures, damn he looks ten years younger than the character he played in the movie. One of the most deserved Oscars in history.
flappy188 I kind of know what you mean, in fact it was some time that I had seen Lewis, I thought he had grown older watching Plainview, it was truly amazing. He literally became a turn of the century oil man.

Leo has a ways to go before he is on the same level as Daniel, but I will say he was completely mesmerizing in The Revenant and makes me think he could do some DDL level shit at some point.

viggo blew my mind in Eastern promises what a great preformence but going upp agains the king himself most be hard as hell. like alot of people said any other year and he whould have had an Oscar for sure
It gives me chills how much he changes in his roles compared to real life. His accent, his voice, the way he walks, his face expressions and completely different. This is just amazing !!!
Daniel Day-Lewis is a down-to-earth guy, and from the rules that he has played not a lot of people would think that he's such a relaxed person. But he really is just a nice guy that is a great actor and can do pretty much anything. Well deserved award and he won over 10 of them for this movie worldwide
I like George Clooney. I enjoy most of his movies, I think he's an excellent director as well. But lets be real here, George Clooney can only play one character and thats George Clooney. It's all good, aint nothing wrong with that. It's sorta like how Bill Murray can only play Bill Murray, but Bill Murray is so fucking great in everything we tend to look past the fact that he's just playing himself.
+khoa pham I'm with you: there are some actors who simply excel at playing themselves. I beg to add the following entries to your list: Tom Cruise, Jack Lemmon, Kurt Russell, William Hurt, Jim Carrey...and, rather grudgingly, Paul Giamatti and Christoph Waltz. As you said, this doesn't mean they're bad actors, they're just really, really good at playing a single role.
+lisvender Hmmm...Jim Carrey did something different with Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. i think he was pretty good in it, I think he could leap into drama whenever he wants.
+lisvender In general I agree with both you and khoa pham, however there are certain films with each actor listed that break their typecast: Clooney: Burn after reading; there are similarities to his usual performance but there are slight ticks and nuances that are very differen, a good performance. Murray: Broken Flowers Tom Cruise: Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick's last film, underrated) can't think of any for Lemmon except for maybe JFK Kurt Russell: Elvis, maybe the Thing William Hurt: A History of Violence Jim Carrey: as Carolina Vallario said: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the Number 23 Paul Giamatti: The Amazing Spiderman 2, Cold Souls Christoph Waltz: I think his two Tarantino roles are quite different in character, but I can also see similarities especially in the accent used and the politeness/formalities of both, in which case I would suggest the Zero Theorem by Terry Gilliam
khoa pham agreed nothing wrong on being able to only play one character. I love Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson and they can only play Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson which is a joy watching them play that same character every film. Brad Pitt is another one I enjoy from that category actors who are great at playing themselves every single film
This speech, this voice is like a breath of fresh air to the oscars, Daniel is so éloquent when he speaks and the choice of the words is magnificient, he is brilliant, the best actor in the World ! There is no one like him , his performance in THERE WILL BE BLOOD is quiet unique , I haven't seen a performance like his in my entire life ,in fact the only equal performance is his performance in My Left Foot ,so that makes him evidently the best actor without any doubt !
This is one time the academy definitely got it right! DDL simply disappeared into this role! Everything he had to do for this role made it so deserving-the voice, the posture, the non verbal language-everything. And I just love that he gave a simple speech of gratitude and admiration-for Paul Thomas Anderson. He didn’t start virtue signaling like so many of them do. He’s retired now, but if someone offers him the right role, I hope he’ll consider coming back again.
I very disrespectfully disagree with the idea that it could have been anyone of these other people. Daniel Day Lewis blows you away with that performance. So powerful. Viggo was good though...
Hell that was a dignified and eloquent speech....DDL is an actor no more...I can't think of any greater loss to the industry. To retire at the top of his game....it's incredible. Is it a damning statement? I don't know. But my goodness, a phenomenal actor....perhaps the best of all time? Every actor brings something unique to the table...DDL bought such an immense talent and complete inhabitation of the role...
DDL, what an icon... what a treasure... HE IS THE GOAT! Just submersed in every role his is in. The other 4 he was up against was no "walk in the park"! They are all seasoned, incredible actors with amazing roles. DDL is just crazy good and probably got a few more votes than the others. Great year for Best Actor nominees!
Damn what competition but the performance he did and there Will be blood it's something that really only comes around in cinema once a couple decades he truly deserved it
I know the Academy is utter bullshit, with the awards bought and sold wholesale, but this is evidence of why I could never sit on the board and vote. How do you pick between Day-Lewis and Viggo in general, and in these two movies in particular!? These are the best performances by two of the very best actors ever in movies that will not soon be forgotten to time.
RandomTXDude210 Viggo didn't even scratch the surface of the level that DDL was operating on in TWBB. It is and always will be the best performance in cinema.
Not really Daniel's is certainly one of the greatest if not the greatest performance by a male lead of all-time, meanwhile Viggo was good but I wouldn't even call it his best career performance let alone anything close to being as good as the performance Daniel gave.
@@b.pack3 Seriously Daniel Day Lewis only plays characters that give him a chance to show off. Just because Viggo played a much less showy part doesn’t mean it’s a worse performance. Acting isn’t good bad or great, it’s just truthful. That’s why these shows are utter bullshit. It’s either an actor wins because they’re popular or an actor wins because their performance is showy.
@@b.pack3 He’s always the center of the piece. He never takes any supporting roles. It’s like the role is just not worth his while if it’s not at the center of attention... and he only ever works with great directors... But I guess he’s just superior to Viggo... whatever!!!
Obviously DDL deserves this oscar, but George Clooney put in a shift in Michael Clayton. One of the most understated and underrated performances ive ever seen. The opening scene alone when he is confronting the rich guy who hit someone is amazing.
Unfortunately it wasn't the first or the last time the academy fucked up the best picture winner. Goodfellas, Shawshank, Gangs of New york, frost/nixon all deserved to win more than the actual winner in those years. Just my opinion of course. In fairness, TWBB losing to No Country is understandable.
It hurts my brain to listen to this gentle man speak after watching There Will Be Blood. The skill and talent to transform himself into Daneil Plainview is astonishing.
I would say Sweeny Todd was a better showcase for Depp as a singer than as an actor. He is good in it, and I love the movie but I wouldn't say he deserved a nod for it. But the actor least deserving here is Tommy Lee Jones. I have never seen a more stiff actor with less range, I really don't get his appeal it baffles me.
I live for film and try to consider myself very open when it comes to all styles of actors and what they bring to the screeen....but Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood is by far my all time favorite male performance of all time! Simply terrifying this man's talent!
As Michael Fassbender says in an interview, he believes DDL is in a league all his own and, I couldn't agree with him more....DDL is my favourite of all-time followed by Spencer Tracey.
I feel sorry for other nominees in a 'Daniel Day Lewis year', that is those years when he's produced a knock-out film and they may as well as start engraving his name on the trophy before the envelope is opened.
DDL is the GOAT. No contest. I hope he changes his mind and returns to acting. And what a humble and heartfelt speech. His speaking voice is so beautiful.
Daniel Day Lewis at his finest. Wonderful performances all around. The story is intriguing and this is one of the best time period pieces ever made. Lewis may be the best male actor of all time and in this movie he shows off his skill to his craft.

My secong choice would've been Viggo, his character dripped with creepiness
Yeah, he was great in that movie.
It's crazy how this man standing there on this stage receiving this award is nearly unrecognizable from the Daniel plainview we saw in the movie, his voice, his gestures, damn he looks ten years younger than the character he played in the movie. One of the most deserved Oscars in history.
i cant even see danial planiview when i look at daniel day lewis, they looks so differnet. like i cant see it being him. i dunno its weird.
That is why he's such an amazing actor!
flappy188 I kind of know what you mean, in fact it was some time that I had seen Lewis, I thought he had grown older watching Plainview, it was truly amazing. He literally became a turn of the century oil man.
flappy188 a true method actor, he doesn’t adapt to a script , he transforms
there's acting where you know it's bad and it's embarrassing to watch; there's acting when it's good and you don't really notice it's an actor acting.....
... then there's acting where you go "holy shit" !
I think Leo Decap. can also pull off the holy shit
no he cant .. he is not even in the same universe as Daniel
Leo has a ways to go before he is on the same level as Daniel, but I will say he was completely mesmerizing in The Revenant and makes me think he could do some DDL level shit at some point.
Leo is mediocre
askjiir de CRAPrio
what really surprises me everytime is how strikingly beautiful he is.
This dude was absolutely GREAT in There Will Be Blood...Not sure why a few argue about which other nominees should have won...Daniel Day Lewis absolutely TOWERED over rest of nominees for this role and also the role as Lincoln...Some of the best acting we have ever seen so far...
You can see how great performer he is when watching his normal way of talking.
Viggo Mortensen was Amazing in Eastern Promises
He should have also won for “In The Name Of The Father”
Robert Sander He also should’ve won for Gangs of New York, he won Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG, and BAFTA but lost the Oscar to Adrien Brody 😡
@@guy5529
Christ. He won for my left foot. He lost for in the name of the father. He lost for gangs of New York. He won for Lincoln. He lost for phantom thread. And three oscars isn’t enough? You think he deserved all 6???
YOU DDL FANS ARE INSUFFERABLE!!!
HES NOT THAT GOOD!!!
@@ruly8153 he should have like 2-4 phoenix deserved the oscar in 2012, haven’t seen my left foot so can’t speak on that but deserved it for phantom thread and possibly deserved it for in the name of the father.
@@niallkquinn4458
He deserved 2 I think. There will be blood and My left foot. The Lincoln one should have been Phoenix and Hanks, Brody and Oldman deserves the other 3
100%. He's been my favorite actor since, and I couldn't ask for a better birthday buddy. 💖
He should've won an Emmy at the Oscars for that smile he gave in the end
Lol. Good one
So intelligent, so humble, so pleasant. He's just a guy who really likes to act in a guild full of status-obsessed tabloid propaganda. Dude seems sweet.
Cullen Cochran He's british! That's why he's intelligent, humble and pleasant. If he were american do you think he would be like that? I doubt it!
Cristina Sousa That's a gross generalisation. Every place has its share of both delightful and obnoxious people. Britain is in no way an exception.
Cullen Cochran He really is a class act. When he won the Screen Actors Guild Award earlier that year, he spent most of his speech praising Heath Ledger, who had just died, and dedicated the award to him 💕
@@ifeelpretty5790 Now THAT was a great, classy moment in movie history! The great sir DDL knew about Heath's amazing talent...Thanks so much for mentioning it.
The acceptance speech of a winner who always knew that any other outcome would have been virtually impossible.
viggo blew my mind in Eastern promises what a great preformence but going upp agains the king himself most be hard as hell. like alot of people said any other year and he whould have had an Oscar for sure
Waiting for Viggo Mortensen to win an Oscar for his incredible talent... He is so over due for that accolade...
The best thing about Day-Lewis in his acceptance speeches is that he mentions the child actors he works with.
It gives me chills how much he changes in his roles compared to real life. His accent, his voice, the way he walks, his face expressions and completely different. This is just amazing !!!
if Johnny Depp doesn't win an oscar until his retirement it will become a senseless award
Overrated asf
Holy shit this is the first time I think I've ever heard his actual voice...
DDL’s performance makes all the other nominees seem so basic Lol
Even more than the way he acts, his humility is incredible
holy shit this was 8 years ago..... doesnt feel that long

I'm win 😜👍😂
2024 here
Daniel Day-Lewis is a down-to-earth guy, and from the rules that he has played not a lot of people would think that he's such a relaxed person. But he really is just a nice guy that is a great actor and can do pretty much anything. Well deserved award and he won over 10 of them for this movie worldwide
The Best Performance since Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
+t1288 I thought Joaquin Phoenix was better in The Master
Even if I am ure opinion or not, "There Will Be Blood" came out before "The Master" :D
t1288 Even if I am ure opinion? WHat? And my bad, I should have said Phoenix in Walk the Line then
t1288 RIP Jonathan Demme.
I'd never say Joaquin was better but he's on top 5 best performances from this Century for sure.
Daniel Day-Lewis is the absolute GOAT and my favourite actor ever.❤
my all time favorite performance by any actor this man is the goat of acting there truly never has been anyone better.
That wasn’t Daniel Day Lewis in There Will be a blood. That was whole other person! Such a deserving win.
That's a good point; I hadn't thought of that.
+lisvender In general I agree with both you and khoa pham, however there are certain films with each actor listed that break their typecast:
Clooney: Burn after reading; there are similarities to his usual performance but there are slight ticks and nuances that are very differen, a good performance.
Murray: Broken Flowers
Tom Cruise: Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick's last film, underrated)
can't think of any for Lemmon except for maybe JFK
Kurt Russell: Elvis, maybe the Thing
William Hurt: A History of Violence
Jim Carrey: as Carolina Vallario said: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the Number 23
Paul Giamatti: The Amazing Spiderman 2, Cold Souls
Christoph Waltz: I think his two Tarantino roles are quite different in character, but I can also see similarities especially in the accent used and the politeness/formalities of both, in which case I would suggest the Zero Theorem by Terry Gilliam
khoa pham agreed nothing wrong on being able to only play one character.
That was a heck of a nominee list to contend with.
Melonie Zappa I hope you’re being sarcastic. None of those matched DDLm’s performance besides maybe Vigo.
Clooney and Depp always play the same person and they are a joke
Evita jealous much?
@@tomcurry1502 Jealous cause I dislike them?
Yea REALLY hope you're joking lol ..
Viggo and daniel very close to call.
yeah man, Viggo killed that performance
+Joel Armstrong Vigo was great but not even close to what day Lewis was able to pull off. Just a perfect performance by a perfect actor.
respectfully disagree, I think they were close, but Daniel edged him out I'll give you that.
I very disrespectfully disagree with the idea that it could have been anyone of these other people. Daniel Day Lewis blows you away with that performance. So powerful. Viggo was good though...
mateo reggi are u kidding me dd Lewis blew everyone out the water
That Eastern Promise’s performance was perfection as well.
I remember watching these nominations without seeing any of the movies and it was very obvious just from the small clips, DDL won the Oscar.
No standing ovation for DDL, for such a masterful performance…kind of incredible.
That's weird to me too because they gave Leo DiCaprio a standing ovation
You know the films a masterpiece when every time a scene is played you get chills. There Will be Blood is that masterpiece.
Daniel is a once in a lifetime actor.
Damn what competition but the performance he did and there Will be blood it's something that really only comes around in cinema once a couple decades he truly deserved it
When I first heard him speak I 😮was so shocked. How can that be D.Plainfield? the same man? Absolutely the best actor alive. Mesmerizing
"I GOT A COMPETITION IN ME, I WANT NO ONE ELSE TO SUCCEED"
Johnny depp 🥰 he even sang...
When you see how he is in reality that proves what a stellar performance he created with Daniel Plainview. Brilliant.
no doubt Daniel Day Lewis won! He is the finest actor ever!
@@b.pack3
Seriously Daniel Day Lewis only plays characters that give him a chance to show off. Just because Viggo played a much less showy part doesn’t mean it’s a worse performance. Acting isn’t good bad or great, it’s just truthful. That’s why these shows are utter bullshit. It’s either an actor wins because they’re popular or an actor wins because their performance is showy.
@@ruly8153 how is Daniel Day Lewis showing off in say Phantom Thread. His performance is very subdued.
@@b.pack3
He’s always the center of the piece. He never takes any supporting roles. It’s like the role is just not worth his while if it’s not at the center of attention...
and he only ever works with great directors...
But I guess he’s just superior to Viggo... whatever!!!
Incredible performance. Well deserved.
Obviously DDL deserves this oscar, but George Clooney put in a shift in Michael Clayton. One of the most understated and underrated performances ive ever seen. The opening scene alone when he is confronting the rich guy who hit someone is amazing.
a great year for movies -- as for the men's best actor award. Wow!! pure greatness.
If it were up to me it would have got the Oscar for best picture, as well.
Unfortunately it wasn't the first or the last time the academy fucked up the best picture winner. Goodfellas, Shawshank, Gangs of New york, frost/nixon all deserved to win more than the actual winner in those years. Just my opinion of course. In fairness, TWBB losing to No Country is understandable.

utubedestroysmytime Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash in 2005
utubedestroysmytime Roma losing to Green Book in 2018
It hurts my brain to listen to this gentle man speak after watching There Will Be Blood. The skill and talent to transform himself into Daneil Plainview is astonishing.
You know who I thought was snubbed.. Brad Pitt for "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford"
Definitely wouldn't mind him getting a nomination instead of Clooney.
I would have kept Clooney, actually - Michael Clayton is his best work in my opinion. I would have honestly excluded Depp.
Sure, I guess it's better than that Depp performance in any case; I personally think O Brother, Where Art Thou? is his best work, though.
He was really good in that, yah..
"I don't get it Big Dan."
BAAAUGGHH! (Smacked in the temple with a log)
One of the best performances since the 90s decade.
I live for film and try to consider myself very open when it comes to all styles of actors and what they bring to the screeen....but Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood is by far my all time favorite male performance of all time! Simply terrifying this man's talent!
Hell of an Actor, Lewis is.
Incredibly talented.
Daniel Day Lewis the greatest actor ever.
This man is the living form of the word "actor"
As Michael Fassbender says in an interview, he believes DDL is in a league all his own and, I couldn't agree with him more....DDL is my favourite of all-time followed by Spencer Tracey.
Possibly the best performance of the new millennium.. Definitely in the conversation.
Probably the Most Deserved Oscar In History on Level with Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Robert De Niro in Raging Bull
His most fascinating role that will be close to my heart.
"That's the closest I'll ever coming to getting a knighthood" - bet he had no idea he would be knighted in 2014 :D
So he took it then? That surprises me. Non-establishment types don't usually stoop for that
Loving this format most in presenting the Oscar, opposite gender from last year presenting to opposite gender of this year!
Unbelievable that there was no standing ovation to one of or if not the greatest performance of all time. These people are clueless.
You're absolutely right! And they still are, for standing up to Will Smith! What's wrong with the world?
Daniel Day Lewis at his finest. Wonderful performances all around. The story is intriguing and this is one of the best time period pieces ever made. Lewis may be the best male actor of all time and in this movie he shows off his skill to his craft.
