Anthony Hopkins' character comes across just as a psychopathic on steroids...Javier's portrayal of Anton is in another level of evil .It transcends evil ...in a way that's hard to explain.
Wow! To think that the Anton killer from No Country for Old Men would love his mother that much is startling. I knew nothing about Javier when I first saw No Country for Old Men about a week ago. I became fascinated by his character. He seemed to be able to take his victims into a type of alternate reality where everyone else went into a type of sleep coma besides himself and his victims. NEVER HAVE I SEEN ANYONE accept an Academy award and openly dedicate it to his mother like that!!! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!! Wow! Let me tell you Javier really deserved that Academy Award for he is one heck of a fantastic actor. The Anton killer character almost seems like he came into existence as a fully grown adult person. It's hard to imagine him ever growing with a family or loving ANYONE. Great acting, folks. That Javier is one heck of a great actor. He really made Anton a believable character!
JAVIER BEING FAMOUS IN SPANISH MOVIES FOR YEARS. I SEE VERY GOOD MOVIES FROM HIM AND PENELOPE AND ANTONIO BANDERAS IN SPANISH. VERY GOOD MOVIES. WELL DESERVED OSCAR
Our family is truly the top of our love for us Hispanics - more for Latin Americans than for Spaniards, I thought, but I was wrong -. Penelope was already his partner but he went to the Ceremony with his mom, remarkable & famous Spanish actress Pilar Bardem. Love Javier, he's proud of his work, proud of his family, proud of his culture and proud of his mother tongue :) . The same for Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio, 2019 best actress nominee, who came to the ceremony with her mom.
Javier Bardem's acceptance speech was awesome giving credit to fellow actors in the film & the incredible producers the Cohen brothers who also won Oscars (for best Picture, Director & Adapted Screenplay) for the movie. Also addressing his mother (whom sat next to him) in his native language of Spanish an endearing final touch.
Vivan tus huevos de oro y viva esa madre que te ha parido. Ganar un oscar es algo muy dificil, ni siquiera los buenos tienen suerte a veces así que sientete orgulloso.
Five centuries ago it was also their language, Matheus, even the natives spoke it (it was the lingua franca of the time). I doubt that today's Americans have lost their language skills, they have simply lost interest in knowing Spanish, their first European mother tongue. By the way "Camargo" is the name of a valley in the north of Spain. Your ancestors were Cantabrian. Btw, Javier was brilliant in NCFOM and deserved the Oscar too.. Even if he didn't win, Casey definitely deserved to be nominated..
Gaurav W Did you see "assassination of Jesse james"- it was dreadfully boring and Affleck was boring in it- Dano was the performance that couldn't have been equaled by anybody else
Of course Bardem deserved that win, but how the hell was Paul Dano not nominated for "There Will Be Blood"??? That was easily the 2nd best supporting performance of the year, muh better than Casey Affleck, though Affleck had 3rd. But Dano's performance was beyond phenomenal.
Completely agree. I was truly impressed tho with Hal Halbrook's nomination, he was just like 30 minutes in the movie, but he made me cry in that scene.

This was a very strong Best Supporting Actor year. For all the good performances, Hal Holbrook was perfect in Into the Wild. He inhabited that man’s life so convincingly and the emotion he kept inside, his love for Alex (Emile Hirsch’s character) was palpable. A study in subtlety and authenticity in acting. Ironically, I felt Javier had these same qualities in the film Biutiful from 2010.
All were fine performances. But no competition when it comes to Javier Bardem with arguably the greatest performance of the last 20 years as Anton Chigurh.

And I think it’s unfortunate that Tom Wilkinson’s turn in Michael Clayton had to come in the same year as No Country For Old Men. Anybody that has not seen this movie...rent it tonight. The story is taut, the film is riveting (and at times downright disturbing), but Wilkinson’s performance is absolutely brilliant. There is so much depth in his interpretation of the character. But Bardem’s turn as Chigurh was so powerful, and unnerving. The Coens are two of America’s greatest filmmakers, and this might be their magnum opus. And Javier Bardem has created one of film’s iconic antagonists. He is ruthless, and operates within a code that is wholly his own.
I absolutely adore No Country for Old Men, probably my favourite movie of all time - Anton is a significant part of why I enjoy it so. Hal Holbrook deserved an Oscar for just that scene with Ron.
Biggest missed opportunity: Javier would've presented his wife the Oscar the following year if they followed this presentation style.
