Old Errol:wood fence gate wheel building a cement work pad area Vlog 2

  • In today's installation I will be improving upon the entrance gate. Pretty much I need to install a wheel on my driveway gate. Because the wood causes a lot of issues when the gate gets cold. In this particular video I will be drilling two holes. And installing the gate. The key to drilling the holes is to drill the holes lower than where you mark them. So that the wheel will constantly be under tension.

    Thought it was a very good video. and worked great for my grade and application. Beside the mistake the have overly pointed out., My focus was on the wheel. Thank you Sir for posting and I found it very helpful.

    nice work. just a little tip from a Danish carpenter. next time you make a gate try to make the diagonal piece the other way. It has to go from the bottem corner by the hinge op to the top corner. that way your gate wont sink and go down and tuch the terrain. Love from Denmark

  • @tintdr
    @tintdr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Couple things you did wrong here. You could have added wood to were you wanted to mount it, 2 you should have shimmied up the fence before drilling the homes and mounting the wheel so the spring takes the pressure, shim it up allot higher so when the wheel is mounted with wheel on floor when fence drops the spring load hold it up. Also spin the bolts around and use stainless or galvanised bolts that wont rust and aren't dissimilar metal of the wheel metal

    • @olderrol1968

      I really just guessed. I tried put in as much tension on the gate wheels pride to install in this. Because once the gate gets wet. it comes down a little bit more than normal.

    Hi good idea with the wheel. The main reason your gate has dropped is because the diagonal braces should be going the other corner to corner. the way they are fitted are not supporting the gate from sagging

    Very useful video. I'll be doing something similar to my driveway gates. It might help you if the diagonal cross-bracing on the back of the gates is mounted in the opposite direction, meaning that its low end is at the hinge side of the gate and the high end of the cross-bracing is at the opening side of the gate leaf. That way, the cross bracing will be able to support the gate leaf from sagging. But you have to make sure that all the joints or fixings that connect the cross-bracing to the gate leaf are tight and secure so that all the force of the gate leaf that wants to sag is transmitted into the bracing. Hinges also have to be securely fixed to the gate leaf. Hope this helps you. Thanks for the video.

    The bolt should have been inserted from the outside of the gate for a cleaner look. Also, I would have compressed a little bit of the spring before mounting the caster wheel to the gate so that it would take some of the load off of the gate hinge.

    I would just say that, though the wheel wouldn't be central on the vertical wood of the gate, I think you would have still had enough strength in the wood if it had been put a bit to the right. You could always still move it, but you would need to glue in some wooden dowel to fill the drilled holes to be able to drill new holes fairly close to the old ones. As for the bolts, if the nuts still come loose, buy some nyloc nuts. They should only be a few cents and they won't vibrate off the threads like those normal nuts. Otherwise good job pal.

    Your Gate hasn't enough support for the weight, Sure a wheel then takes all the support of the weight but then your dragging a wheel every time you open or close the gate. I can tell by the bottom of your fence panels that the whole gate is drooping, It doesn't look as if your gate was framed correctly
    What Farmers and fence builders been done for Hundreds of years you take a cable or wire from the top of the gate by the top hinge near the post down to the bottom of the gate at the opening and put a turn buckle in the middle of the wire or cable and tighten until it takes the droop out

    • @olderrol1968

    You could of just trimmed the the bottom boards with a saw boom finished in 5mins then back in side where it’s warm.

      I wish it was that eazy. Trimming the bottom of the fence.does not stop the gate from dropping down.

      Amazon has them now as well. I also purchased a U shaped 2” double bolt to attach mine from a local ma & pa hardware store. These wheels work GREAT on Single and Double Gates. If you have a double gate that is sagging also install a turn buckle it will Help Tremendously and is super easy to install as well. Hope this helps.
