I seem to recall that suits were the standard for good bluegrass groups, several decades back. Bill Monroe might have had a lot of influence on that. He wanted his bands to look respectable. It's class.
Speaking of suits, the fact that Brian Epstein recommended that The Beatles wear suits (as opposed to the bad-boy-leather attire) made them more 'respectable' in the eyes of adults at the time.
