It is a traditional Mexican song which has been like a tour the force for singers, to boast their skills to sing. The song describes a somewhat pastoral, bucolic, scene. The name itself, "El pastor" (The Shepherd) gives you a hint of this. It narrates one working day of the shepherd, how he guides his herd to pasture before dawn, and how he uses his flautín (piccolo flute) to attract the attention of the sheep. So the singer imitates the piccolo flute sound with his own voice, as a sound image of the scene itself. When the sun goes down, the shepherd guides his herd back to the pen, and again uses his flute to show the sheep the way back home. Arturo Vargas is, no doubt, the best falsetto singer of his generation, and Mariachi Vargas is the best Mariachi ensamble in Mexico.
