He started as an opera singer but ended up singing rancheras because at that time, it was more popular. Opera didn’t have a big enough audience. He didn’t want to wear a mariachi costume at first. Who would have thought that he sang rancheras in such a beautiful way that he brought mariachi music to a new height in the heart of Mexicans and the whole world.

JORGE had a show at Teatro Blanquita, he comes out starts the show and manages to bust the speakers at the theater; so he had to put down the Mic and finish the show without any electronics, which was totally not a problem for him.

It's so sad that both legends died at such a young age (Negrete at 42 from hepatitis and Infante in a plane crash at 40.) I don't know if people realize how huge Negrete was in the Actors Union in Mexico (he and Cantinflas has a massive battle over leadership of the Union.)

@@robertsosa2083 he was something in between a tenor and a baritone, either a lower-deep dramatical tenor leaning into baritone or a lightier and higher baritone leaning into tenor. Usually the so-called Second Tenor voices fall in a mix-up between a lower tenor or a higher baritone types, and they usually label themselves and lean more as tenors because after all there are greater songs and leading roles for those heroic tenor voices, rather on true baritones for the same level - and usually at those times, true full-baritones sounded even lower and darker as they´re First Bass-type rather than Second Tenor.
Nowadays as the musical tunning point is quite higher than at the middle of 20th century, the baritones are sung by the lighter baritones of the Second Tenor grade, instead of First Basses, and the latter ones became the absolute true basses as the real ones of Second Bass tier type became so much rarer today!!
Darker heroic tenors now aren´t just Second Tenor type but a mix-up between the First Tenor and Second Tenor tiers which back then was the central Lyrical Tenor standard one, and these ones are now totally at the First Tenor label alongside the Light/Coloratura Tenors not much different from each other except in weight and lenght on reaching higher notes - Coloratura Tenors are pretty much neutral or androgyne voices than what they were some 75 years ago as everything got higher and higher.
So for today standards, Negrete voice could be labeled as a true barytone, but back then there wasn´t any doubt he was a true heroic/deeper tenor then.

Looks like y'all also forgot the beautifulness of banda, like you should research more about the genre. For example, i can recommend you to listen "Dios Nunca Muere" or "Pinotepa Nacional" with banda oaxaqueña (or just any chilena with banda; there's also a video out there of "banda sinaloense vs banda oaxaqueña" so you can hear the differences)

I think my mom is super mexican because some of my friends who claim I’m not Mexican enough don’t event like the most Mexican things. I still till this day prefer hearing the news in Spanish. Idk why.

What's the problem? Music evolves and everything's beautiful or interesting in their own way. That's how we work, we evolve, and it doesn't make banda or reggaeton any less of a good genre or music

Well, here you are talking about a god, no kidding Jorge Negrete hypnotized millions o people singing with such a masculine style and, he is one of the big names in the golden time of Mexican movie industry the way he executed those songs is second to none, then later on other singers became a group of gods like Negrete but with a different technique, and gave life to songs which keep impacting millions still in these days, these singers are alive in the heart of people , every praise have been given to them by the millions of fans who still buy their records throughout the Spanish speaking world .

We were in a downtown Rome, Italy, hotel one day back in 1993. when the owner/manager of the place learned that we were Mexicans, he immediately made reference to Jorge Negrete, whom he called "the best singer in the world!" That was nice coming from a compatriot of Luciano Pavarotti. I also know that Placido Domingo (born in Spain) grew up in Mexico, admiring Jorge Negrete and wanted to sing like him. Placido got his dream and then some.

Welcome to Jorge Negrete's fan club, In my family he is the equivalent to Pavarotti to italians, his Baritone voice was very educated, armonic, manly but with a touch of softness you don't find anywhere else, combine that with great songs composed by Manuel Esperón and played by the famous "Trío Calaveras" and you get something nothing short of a heaven-like experience. Curious fact: Jorge Negrete is probably as well known in Cuba as he is in México. Search for a song named "Cuba de mi vida" performed live in Havana, if it doesn't touch your heart, nothing will. After hearing him Pedro Infante will sound like a peasant singing for his cows.

Jorge Negrete took singing lessons with the prestigious maestro José Pierson, which allowed him to start singing for the radio. When he performed well-known operatic arias and songs by Mexican composers for the first time on the XETR radio station in 1930, a dizzying and frantic career to fame and stardom began for that young man, barely twenty years old. After singing opera (he even recorded some operas in 1932 under the pseudonym Alberto Moreno) and performed on the radio and in music magazines in his country, such as the popular "Calles y más calles" at the Lírico theater (1935), with songs by maestro Juan S. Garrido, Negrete also worked on the most prestigious stages in the United States, from where he jumped to the great world theaters.

Remember that this is from the times when artists got their places in history from *actual talent* and not for being only gym pretty faces with a ton of media promotion, pushing them more for their photoshopped looks and 'image' than for their generic 'talent'. Too many karaoke singers these days.

Did you know Jorge negrete has 2 grand sons that are excellent singers as well? Their names are Lorenzo and Manuel Negrete.
