  • Pineapple Rag 🍍 by Scott Joplin is a super fun, catchy, & lively song. I personally think this piece sounds best when played at a “moderate” pace, as I’ve played, to truly hear its elegant melodies. I think this rag is up there as one of Joplin’s most famous pieces. This is actually my favorite rag to play; I’m sure you can see how much I love this piece from my movements and facial expressions. Right hand slipped up for a bit right at the 3 minute mark, but hope you enjoy my playing anyway 😊

Very nice ! If you don't mind to awnser i have a few questions ! For how long have you been playing, and at what age did you start playing as a selft taught ? I'm on the path of learning piano myself at 29, and my main goal is to play ragtime. Do you have some recommendations for me to one day be at least as good as you are ? books about music theory that you felt like helped you, books about playing ragtime, etc ... i'll take it all !
    TIA.

    • @Natt_piano
      @Natt_piano  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Hi there, thanks for watching! Happy to answer your questions :) that’s really awesome you’re trying to learn ragtime, it’s such a fun genre to play. So I’m almost 27, but I started to teach myself in 2013. I started off learning classical music but it didn’t click with me. Once I heard ragtime and tried it back then, it “made sense” to me. I grew up on Nintendo games so some music patterns and sounds are quite similar to ragtime music, so that helped me pick ragtime up as a late teen.
I honestly did not learn with music theory books! I only learned how to read notes and basic chords from a music teacher, that’s it, but ragtime itself I learned by myself. I watched a lot of TH-cam yearsss ago to learn about ragtime and listening to ragtime pianists such as Bachscholar. A lot of the ragtime patterns get more familiar and “predictable” the more you play - you’ll know what I mean when you play more :) but I HIGHLY recommend you know how to read notes and get familiar with basic chords and key signatures. Also, look up “Scott Joplin’s School of Ragtime” to learn the basic ragtime sounds and patterns. It’s a good entry into the ragtime genre and movements. Then, you can be ready to start tackling some rags.
The first ragtime song I learned to be honest was maple leaf rag, 10 years ago. I do not recommend that song to start with, my playing back then was all over the place lol. It took me a few years to get comfortable with ragtime, during Covid was when I got “much better” with my skills and performances (I still have to improve). So I would recommend you to play Peacherine Rag or The Favorite by Scott Joplin as good “starter” pieces. Those songs have their difficult parts but overall I personally say they’re good entry songs into this genre.
Hope this helped!! Happy to chat more about music if you have more questions. Thanks for the compliment, but I’m not that good LOL, I play for fun and I know I’m not perfect with my playing.

@@Natt_piano Thanks a lot for taking the time to awnser !
i'm only 2 months in learning piano, currently still learning how to read notes and chord from a beginner's method book that already helped me a lot as i can read and play very basic exercices, but obviously i still need a lot of work on this to be able to know all chords and scales in all keys, be able to read the notes easier and faster, etc ...
Before starting piano i have been listening ragtime for quite a long time, watching many videos, one of the first ragtime video i landed on was one from Tom Brier, it imediatly "clicked in" to me. Maybe deep inside for the same reason as you, beign from the 90's and playing lots of nintendo games !
At first i was willing to follow the book i bought to build a solid base, but i started drifting a bit from the exercices as i don't enjoy the songs themselves (classical, french popular songs made easy for beginners as it is a french book, and so on), and 2 weeks ago i decided that i'll be still following the book, but also aside of it, have my fun and start to learn Pineapple Rag, as it is one of my favorites rag song :)
Maybe not the easiest to learn on, but i enjoy the process a lot. Currently i can play the 2 first pages on the right hand at a decent tempo, and i'm bringing the left hand alongside it, little by little, bars after bars, at a slow tempo. Beign right handed i feel like it's easier for me to grind the right hand to a point that i can play it without thinking, and then add the left hand wich i have to focus on.
I take note from your advice to look on "School of ragtime", and also will keep in mind your recommendations on Peacherine and Favorite rag as future "not too hard" rag songs to play, hopefully after i'll be able to play Pineapple rag, or maybe as a side goal if i ever come to a point where i feel like it's to hard for me to stay on it at a particular time because of a lack of technique.
Got this video in my recommendations today and watched almost all of your previous one, definitely subing to your channel looking forward to your next videos !

    • @Natt_piano

@@paulaner4514 oh so you’re quite new behind the keys! It’s never too late to learn. That’s the right thing to do, learning how to read notes and getting familiar with some chords. A beginner book is a great idea imo. Don’t worry too much about learning so many chords as there’s so many variations of them. What I like to do while learning a new piece is to look up the name of the chord to get familiar with it. I admittedly don’t know scales at all, but reading notes comes smoothly the more you play! Reading notes while playing is a fantastic skill I don’t have… I should learn music theory, I’m glad you’re doing that while in the beginner stages of learning piano!
Yeah Tom Brier is a ragtime king! He’s so amazing and gifted to sight read and play at the same time. Yeah, those Super Mario and old SNES tunes are so catchy and helped develop my subconscious love for ragtime due to the similar sounds haha
I totally know what you mean that you “drifted from the exercises”, the beginner exercises are there just to help you learn the basics, fingering, and whatnot, but often times you won’t enjoy those classical or foreign popular songs made for beginners lol. Learn what you can from the book to get used to hand movements, musical theory, note progressions, and so on, but while also learning songs you enjoy!
Pineapple rag is a great song, it’s my fav ragtime song too :) It’s actually not a super difficult rag at all, sections A & B aren’t bad. The trio and the D section I personally think are a little more challenging for newbies. Enjoy the process indeed! Amazing you can play the first half of the song with your right hand, the problem can be synchronizing the right hand with the left hand jumps 🙃 you got the right idea with learning how to play a rag; I learn a new piece 2-4 measures at a time with my right hand, then learning the left hand for those measures, and then slowlyyyy put them together until I get the left and right hand to sound good, and slowly increase the playing tempo, then I’ll move on to the next set of measures. I’m the same where my right hand can move “freely” basically and my left hand I need to concentrate on.
Good luck learning Peacherine and The Favorite if you choose to learn them after Pineapple Rag! If not immediately after pineapple, definitely keep those in mind for future considerations after getting some more technique down.
Aw thanks for subscribing & watching some other simple videos of mine 🙏🏻 I look forward to hearing your progress with Pineapple Rag!
