A few notes for anyone trying to place something in some of these ads: the music in the Kangoo Frisbee ad is Moby's _Run On_ , the narrator of the Claudia Schiffer-starring Citroën Xsara ad is the legend Brian Cox, the woman with the red Metro in the Kwik-Fit ad (4:24) is Chrissie Cotterill, who played Debbie in _May to December_ , and the very briefly-seen mechanic in the same advert, handing the keys to the elderly lady, is, I believe, Richard Ridings, familiar in voice form to many as Daddy Pig in _Peppa Pig_ .
That Reliant Scimitar advert is a real rarity, I don't think anyone knew that existed! Their was a 1970s Reliant Robin advert but that hasn't been seen in 40 years, it showed a small car going round a game board like monopoly called the "economy game"
Modern cars have gotten so ludicrously big and heavy, but I was recently in a car of similar vintage to that Peugeot 205 (0:00) and I'd forgotten quite how bare and empty they felt. There's just nothing in them - painted metal and a scrap of fabric over part of the door. I'll accept some of the modern car's bloat to not feel like I'm in a tin can. Unrelated, but _La Bamba_ is one of the first two songs I learned off by heart in Spanish, so whenever I hear it now it's guaranteed to be in my head (and usually coming out of my mouth) for a good three day so... thanks, Steve? (Actually, I love the song, though the superior Los Lobos version, so I'll not hold it against you. And I love when you put a little soundbite or snippet of audio at the end - the one after the _Kwik-Fit_ jingle made me chuckle 😁)
I try to include novelty snippets when possible. The inspiration doesn't always strike. I also like La Bamba. I don't speak Spanish, but I know a lot of the song phonetically.
Some great adverts there. The Vauxhall Astra "Red Arrows" one appear to show the rare 5 door GTE versions that were only on sale between 1985 and 1986. Quite why Vauxhall decided to drop the 5 door model and only offer the 3 door I don't know. The less powerful SRi versions continued to be sold in 5 door body style. I believe Steve has fond memories of the Astra mark 2. 😉 Fiat Tempra (1990 - 96): these were great cars, a, rare sight in the UK. I owned one but the example I owned was crap. It ran on 3 cylinders and let me down a few times. My late mother had an evening job for Lex Wilkinson in the 1980s when I was a nipper. Was taken over by Federal Express if I recall correctly and then my mum was made redundant by them at the turn of the 1990s.
I definitely lean towards 5-door. it's one of the crieria I put into searches when I'm looking to buy a car. Curious .. were you referring to me when you mentioned memories of the Astra mark 2?
No idea on that one. I think it might be a proper song (ie. not just made for the advert). I was expecting it to trigger a copyright claim, but no. La Bamba, however .. that one did.
A great selection. Using patriotism to sell new cars seems so old hat now. Never used to really believe all the negativity about Kwik S*it (and Halfrauds) until I started using them and inevitably got ripped off. Never again!
OMG, don't get me started on Halfrauds! Recently ended up trying to get some air-con work done, as they were the only place near me that did the work I needed. They had my car for half a day, only to tell me they couldn't get some bolts undone! They also managed to forget to reconnect my headlight units as well. Took me the other half of the day to work out what had happened! 😡
@@RetroSteveUK In my experience either i) the work the car was booked in for isn't completed properly or ii) the car is returned with faults it didn't have before or iii) other 'urgent' issues are identified which need immediate (and costly) attention. More likely than not a combination of these! I just use the franchised dealer the car was bought from now. They have proved to be competent and trustworthy and only slightly more expensive than the cowboy outfits.
My favourite ads are the car and motoring ones 👍

@@El-Ritmo I recognised Richard Ridings as one of the characters from the old "Common As Muck" TV show about the bin men.
Man the automobiles from the U.K. looked super cool back then, really bad ass. These adverts were amazing, well done Steve 👍🏽😎👍🏽

The Metro, a British car to beat the world..perhaps not
Nope. 🤣
That Peugeot 205 advert at the beginning was awesome though, great find btw 🙂👍
Thank you once again, being in the motor trade back then, it does bring back fond times.

"A British car to beat the world." BL hubris at its finest. Actually the Metro was a nice little car, we used to have one.
You Tube put a car advert in the middle of this... it was over before I realised what they'd done LOL.
Wow! That did make me giggle .. 🤣🤣

@@RetroSteveUK You mentioned yours once or twice iirc.
Love the first ad! Clap and a pat on the head for mum parking haha.
Was a good bit of parking, tho' 😀👍
Did BL really manage to talk the navy into lending them a few landing craft?
For a small fee?
Seeing as how the UK is so small a place, wouldn't it take far longer than a year to put 12,000 miles on a car?
For some reason I now have The Proclaimers stuck in my head.
Who sang that song in the Fiat Tempra ad anyone?

@RetroSteveUK I can't get it out of my head I think it's on a chill out cd album I've got somewhere
@RetroSteveUK just been digging the cds out, Found it! Only You by Praise
@@stevedickson5853 I will look that up, thanks.

Have you noticed that most people talk proper English ., things nowadays are so different
