    Hi, I work in Human Resources. If you are reading this comment and you are one of the people who submitted your salaries for this video, for the love of Christ you need to FIND A BETTER PAYING JOB. If the animation studio you work for has an HR department they are absolutely exploiting you and your labor. ALWAYS ASK FOR A HIGHER WAGE THAN WHAT YOU REALLY WANT IN THE INTERVIEW PROCESS. Let the interviewer negotiate downwards to your desired salary range.
    It is the year 2023, in the United States any salary from $15/hr --> $19/hr IS NOT A LIVABLE WAGE.
    If possible always try and push for unionization in your Animation studios. There are very few downsides to unions, if you don’t Unionize you risk being automated and losing your job in the next decade with A.I. and Machine Learning advancement in the animation field.
    --sincerely, a random HR person

    Wowwww, this is super informative! I'm a 19 year old art student trying to earn my BFA in Digital Art and Animation. The pay rates in these videos are the around the same amount I had when working a full time entry level job not needed of a degree. This really opened my eyes about how important animation unions are. It would be cool to see you dive into talking about animation unions in depth in future videos!
    Also I want to say thank you for posting your videos in general. I remember I started watching your art career videos when I was in 9th grade and admiring your story of how you came to be in the animation industry. Your story and guidance in these videos helped me step my foot forward into making my mark into the animation industry. So thank you! :)

    I've worked in the VFX industry (very similar to animation) for 12yrs for studios in both LA and Vancouver and I can confirm that starting positions can pay very low. My first gig right out of university in LA paid me $500 a week and after factoring in OT I was essentially making less than $12 hourly. I also had to commute an hour each way for that job. That to say, it can be very difficult to get your foot in the door in this industry. Sometimes artists need to take low pay, work unpaid OT, or do undesirable work just to get some professional experience. The best way to increase your income fast is to hop around to different studios and make connections. Connections can lead to better gigs and each new gig ask for more money. I'd also like to add that VFX doesn't have a union like animation does so that can attribute to why it's a bit harder to get started in a VFX career.

      jusr curious, but how are u doing nowadays? in terms of jobs with a good pay in the VFX industry

    • @itsBobtart
      @itsBobtart ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@andieskywalker at this point in my career I make a pretty comfortable salary to support living in downtown Vancouver. I’m in the ballpark of some of the salaries in her last video. But in my personal experience it did take me about 10yrs to get to that point.
      Once you reach a senior artist level it’s much easier to find work and get the money you ask for.

      @@itsBobtart im glad to hear that! hope u keep on growing and living a successful and comfortable life as an artist :) would u say this whole journey was worth it? im a student rn and im honestly scared hahaha

    • @itsBobtart
      @itsBobtart ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andieskywalker It was absolutely worth it! Sure, it was a rough start, but I believe that I had to go through it all to get to where I am now. There were many experiences and lessons learned along the way.
      Despite the long hours and undesirable conditions at times I still find this career extremely fulfilling. I’m creating movie magic with so many talented and creative people and I’ve built some of my strongest friendships along the way. And I’ve been able to travel to a new country for my work. That makes it all worth it.
      It’s okay to be scared. I forget who said it but there’s a quote something along the lines of “if it excites you and it scares you at the same time, it’s probably worth doing”. So go for it and I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

    I always think the pay USA would be decent, but boy how wrong was I... I'm a 2D background artist who work in a local studio for 5 years (Malaysia) , and I got pay (in conversion) US$500 per month. which is lower than any local fast food workers. 😅

  • @cetriyasArtnComicsChannel
    @cetriyasArtnComicsChannel ปีที่แล้ว +9

    sounds like these people are getting paid less than working retail...
    I work in appreal and its maddening to me that in LA they're asking people to work there for around 50k. how can you live on that? and why such low wage for a specialized skill?
    Also, those states keep lying that 'cost of living is low" um 1 br in FL is abour 13-1600 a month and thats not including Miami. also, you're not getting paid enough to save for retirement which is tax deductable. And no, you can't afford a 400k mortgate on 40k salary (not to mention student loans)

  • @IreensBeans
    @IreensBeans ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This is actually crazy because my veryyyy first job out of college was a junior concept artist at this LA tech startup and I got 80k a year with 0 experience!!! (Ofc they were a tech startup and not an animation studio. And sadly I got laid off at the 10 month mark, but they had a veryyy nice severance package. So, still. LOL) The fact that so many people working in animation and VFX are being paid this low is ridiculous. I'm glad I started off my art career with a reasonable, liveable income because I don't think I'll accept being low balled like that fr.

    have you made videos about getting into the industry without connections?
    I've moved to the states over a year ago, and applied to 10 different places per day for a few positions (primarily storyboard) for a whole year and never once heard back from any studio..
    I considered internships as well but all I found were for grad or under grad, while I was recently graduated before moving here, my degree was from a foreign country and I'm afraid that limited my chances while the window (6 months after graduation) was limited

    i'm an Art student taking BA in Animation here in the Philippines and our pay when it comes to local studios based off of my connections who work in the animation industry locally are being underpaid which 9k to 15k PHP Isn't a livable wage. But I think Internationally companies do pay more with a starting salary of 30k PHP for a character designer (livable in PH but not livable in US)

    When artists state their years of experience do they have professional time accrued with a company or providing services to back it up, or is it just a number they are posting along with their portfolio? I always wonder if someone has been working in blender for 2 years, make one or two decent projects, and then say they have 2 years of experience.

      The employees ATTEMPTED to unionize, but the studio management hired a union busting firm with some really shady tactics and threats, and then quietly fired everyone that had vocally been pro-union. Last I heard none of the unionization attempts in Atlanta have succeeded yet.
