Cloudcroft sits at an elevation of 8,668 feet in southern New Mexico's Sacramento Mountains, over 4,300 feet above the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan Desert below. The logging industry surrounding Cloudcroft boomed at the beginning of the 20th Century, as a railroad was built to carry spruce and fir timber down to sawmills in Alamogordo. Favorable newspaper reports, though, quickly made Cloudcroft a popular tourism destination as well, a place to escape the desert heat much like we're doing in this week's new episode of Grand Adventure. We survey the camping, RV and recreational opportunities surrounding Cloudcroft, and also visit nearby White Sands National Monument.
