Cloudcroft has grown tremendously since I lived there in the 1970s. There are at least four times the number of buildings on Burro Ave. I love that little town, and I have so many good memories of it.
In Dec 1959 to Feb 1960 we went to Cloudcroft. Probably on Swallow Pl. Snow was 4ft deep. 10 or so uf us 8-10 yr olds took a sled to the top of the road and a couple of kids stood on the highway and watched and stopped traffic so we had a clear shot straight across the highway! Mid January is still the record cold for Alamogordo, -14F in Jan 1960 and maybe 2 ft of snow. Threre was an apple oracher near the train trestle a few miles outside of Cloudcroft. U pick 'em apples were 5 cents lb. I saw once a train on the trestle which I think was a rare event for C. 1960
It sure would be a rare event to see a train on the Mexican trestle since the line was abandon in 1948. The record low for Alamogordo is -13 set on Febuary 3,2011
@@TheHypnotstCollector Double check the official record for temperature. And once again-the rail line was abandoned in 1948 along with the track pulled up and the trestle had to be rebuilt in 2009 as you see it today because it rotted away
@@frankpeletz1818 I checked the "official record" many decades ago. Don't know where you got your official record. And I don't care if the line was abandoned, I know that. I merely said I saw an engine on the trestle. c. 1957. Don't know if a train was up there 9yrs later but it's what I recall. Trestle was sound then..
Mid March to mid May is the time of year when many of these lil mountain towns have the winter ski season behind them and are resting up for the summer deluge. The time of year when these business folk take their vacation while they can!!!! Nice time to visit if you are there for the scenery and quite isolation because not much is going on.
I THINK he meant, "My batt tops off with 80 more miles and that shouldn't take 3 hours." But still... wanna go 300? Just how many hotel rooms do I rent a day for 5-10 hours of recharge time, and that's assuming I am first-in-line. Otherwise, just remember your laundromat days when patrons might not return for another hour to move their clothes so yours could fit in. That's another stall time factor. It ain't the range, folks - it's the RECHARGE TIME that's important on EVs. Very nice for city driving with your home station...
The grub at the Western Bar and Grill is very good also. The chicken fry is as big as a hubcap...2 or 3 meals! That beer truck parked in the middle of the street was making its weekly delivery up from Alamogordo.
The Western Bar was there in the 1970s. I loved that old shuffleboard they had there. Freeda wouldn't serve me because she knew I was underage. I had to go to the Lodge Hotel to get a beer.
The coop building looks like they fixed up the storefront. The buildings downtown also look like they've been given a fresh coat of paint. It looked rundown for years.
I was born in Alamogrodo and lived in Cloudcroft for 12 years, I miss my little cloudcroft and I hate how there are weed despenseries there now. The population is about 800
It's the re-charge time that kills me for EVs. Spending 3 hours for 100 miles or 200... ugh, when I'm used to logging 800 on a medium day. I never care about range-claims - it's RECHARGE TIME that kill EV viability for me. Thanks for this nice li'l succinct tour of CC.
Good to know…but for those of us who have just stumbled onto your videos for the first time with this video, what are you driving? We. Watch a lot of EV videos at my house, but are not familiar with what kind of charge goes with what car, so we haven’t figured it out yet. What kind of EV are you driving, good sir?
If you Google White Sands Missile Range, you can see how big it is. It covers a huge chunk of this area. You can only drive through the part where Alamogordo goes to Las Cruces. The rest is restricted. If you wanted to drive from Capitan to Truth or Consequences, you have to go around White Sands Missile Range, and it's 150 miles. If you went "as the crow flies," it's 100 miles.
Yes GM is ending the Chevy Bolt but replacing it with an Equinox EV so all is not lost. GM is working on improvements to EV vehicles as well as introducing new models in the near future . Change doesn't come easy but it's coming on fast....leave it to Rusty to find free EV charging.
All we wanted was a burger and a beer. This town must be LDS because the latter was impossible to find. Even the restaurant advertising "cold beer" said they no longer had a liquor license. Wtf?
I have kind of figured out a way to extend an EVs range. Simply pull a small trailer with a generator on it so when the batteries are depleted you could start the gennie and fill the battery. Obviously it would be for emergencies only and the generator would need to be chosen properly so it could handle the current draw. Sounds like a joke, but if need be, the range could be greatly extended. My son drove someone's Tesla across the country and said the trip was basically aiming for the next charging station. Rusty, could the generator in your class C power the charger?
I just heard GM has decided to drop its affordable Chevy Bolt EVs. Both the EV and EUV will be phased out this year. Instead they’re making the $100,000, 2024 Silverado EV 😅
It was the worst decision ever to get a Chevy bolt. Chevy will stop making them so therefore you’re gonna have massive depreciation on your car in the next 2 to 3 years should’ve stuck with a Tesla. It is not going anywhere and it’s the most innovative brand for EV.

Lived here, the road 244 at night has herds of Elk and wild horses from four to eight running across the road. What a sight.

I know Cloudcroft is kinda touristy, but I like that little town! Thanks for taking us there!
As a life long ICE driver, I found it interesting how to plug in your car.
3 hours charging time for 80 miles of range? How does that work for road trips? Dedicate every other day to charging without any driving?

Does Cloudcroft get cool at night or just during the day in the summer? It's a beautiful town and scenery is fantastic.
cool all day long...sometimes cold
the pine trees in Cloudcroft smell incredible.
It'll get into the 40s at night in the summer.
As soon as the sun casts shadows on the area it cools down quickly
30 miles an hour, wow! It would take all day to charge up if you were really low! Nice ride, thanks!
I have to put Cloudcroft from one of my places to visit
How do you pay for the electricity you use at that station. I didn't see you use a card or cash.
it's free

That's very disappointing of GM. They designed a cute vehicle that people liked, and it was affordable.
