I have a bit of a problem with 99% of JRPGs as a whole (retro or modern) as I've gotten older. I often feel its mainly full of typical shounen anime tropes, self-insert fantasies, and very one-note writing as a whole. I enjoyed them when I was a kid or a teen, but Im old now. I grew up with this stuff. I've matured past needing the 17 year old protagonist to magically win some fights and save the world in a world where adults are useless. However.... this game. This game was specifically made to approach and question difficult topics like war, regret, betrayal, and death in a mature way full of empathy. The only games I can think of that try and do this on PS1 are FFT and Alundra. Also breaks trends where the protagonist is not only a woman, but a mature woman. There is no weird power fantasy here that most of the "best RPGs of all time" have. Compounded with the fact this wasn't some simple "bad guy is bad." I get sometimes players wanted that kind of simple narrative from games like Suikoden 2 or Lunar - but this game was obtuse on its "who is actually bad," you lost more than you won, and had multiple confined stories that wanted you to know there are meaningful stories and purpose in even the smallest things. Hell, Badrach's entire story is a low-level story about actual true ethics and humanity that made you ponder those topics without even knowing it - and he was a trash human. Man, this game has aged like a fine wine. Its a wonderful narrative and I'll die on the hill that this the best RPG on the system. Edit: Also, this game is one of the only games that made me feel the same way that Quintet games did on SNES. To me, that is something truly remarkable.

I played this on a borowed PS1 from a friend of mine on a small ct tv at my parents home when i was 17 years old. The PS1 was the first generation so i needed to turn it sideways to avoid overheating and it had no memory card. The disc itself was a pirate copy of the japanese version of the game 😃 I didn‘t understand one word and i couldn‘t finish it at all because of it. I‘m from germany so Valkyries (or as we say Walküren) are part of our legends and history which was fascinating for me. The sounds, the menus, the charakters talking, it was sad and had a dark vibe, it was beautiful, the first time meeting Odin…the little girl crying…Freya…the music…i fell in love with the game instantly and i started it all over again every day after school because i couldn’t save the game 🥹 It shaped me and my love for RPG‘s forever. It‘s one if not the most important game for me. I bought the US version later in my live, but i sold it again (big mistake) because i needed the money. One day i will buy it again in complete form. Btw. i’m the original author of the Valkyrie Profile 1 Wikipedia entry. That’s why it‘s very detailed, written with passion and has some very minor sentence errors even to this day 😅 A japanese capsule toy figure of Lenneth (the colored one!) is still standing at my home office place in my apartment 😃 I will love this game till i die! Thanks for the video and bringing back some good memorys!
I'm impressed by how ahead of it's time this game was. It seems better than most ot the RPG's we get currently, on a mechanical, visual and story standpoint.
The pixel work looks awesome. I was into rpg’s as a kid too but I couldn’t play all of them. It’s been fun going back and finding games I missed and playing them now, this will be my next one.
I remember buying this day one when it first came out. I loved the gorgeous sprite work, beautiful music, and the sad and haunting story really stuck with me. Sadly I could never fully wrap my head around the gameplay and eventually lost interest. Now I find it a game I prefer watching versus actually playing it.
I didn’t own a PlayStation when I was young, but I remember all the kids were talking about this game when it came out. I finally was able to play it when it was Re-release on the PSP.
Playing this game right now as a matter of fact with our old ps1 disc on the ps3. I played it way back when it 1st came out but I wasn't as adept at RPGs back in the day and never got very far as I couldn't wrap my head around d a game where I felt like I had to give away my best characters. Playing it now, as an adult with some internet help to reassure me that I'm not hamstringing myself right out the gate, I am having a blast. Amazing sprites, a deceptively deep combat system that gets better and better as new characters, spells, abilities come into play and bar none, the most dramatic and emotionally charged RPG ever made. Did you feel bad when Tifa or Alys died in their respective games? Well this game is those same moments hitting you a dozen or three times a playthrough. The overall story is a little light as your left up to your own devices to accomplish the final goal but I feel the multiple fatally themed short stories surrounding your Einjeariar is a bold and unique approach to story telling and is, imo, a welcome alternative to the ocean of "young boy chosen to defeat a great evil" stories that permeate the RPGs of the time. 9.2 out if 10. Better than FF7 at the very least.
Falling in love to this game the first time i saw it when i was a teenager. The gameplay, the music, the graphics, the story...but i will admit that i was disappointed back then when i found out from other people about the so called "true ending". I played it over and over again to see the true/very good ending, but i failed. After 20+ years , i played it again in ps1 emulator. And then i found out the true/very good ending was actually just an alternate ending to make you feel happy after those sad stories and ending. And its IMPOSSIBLE to achieve it without the developer's magazine guide. I dont have magazine that time nor a place for to my area to buy one.
Oh my god I'm so happy people are finally talking about this series, it legit makes me wanna cry. VP Was my first every video game experience when I was a tiny little girl (albeit through a let's play, as I didn't get my hands on a physical copy of the PS1 ver until I was like 15 and I'm glad I didn't wait longer bc MAN that price point. 115 bucks was a steal lol) and seeing one of the most important things to me, even if it seems silly for that thing to be a video game, just makes me so happy! Ahh, just hearing the OST in the background is hitting my emotions so hard. Damn near every einherjar recruited I end up crying for, I don't know how the writers made it so easy to get attached in (usually) less than 15 minutes. Shiho, Yumei, Belenus, and Llewelyn's in particular always get me, even though I've seen them dozens of times by now. Damn near every time I've seen those four, I'm either teary-eyed or crying. And don't even get me started on how much I love Jelanda and Arngrim's recruitments! Kashell and Janus's also get me pretty good, albeit in the case of Kashell it's usually seeing Celia just break down that gets me. I wish there had been time to give more elaboration about her whole situation, though. Same with Lady Beliza, who was mentioned during Belenus's recruitment, along with how Asaka fares following his death. All we know abut her is that she's well taken care of by the other members of Belenus' household. Actually now that I think about it, I believe there was more elaboration of Beliza in the JP version. I should look that up later. Oh my god YES, the sprites are gorgeous! Also, can we just appreciate the beautiful backgrounds? I can hardly believe they were all hand-painted! Some much pain-staking work went into them, and yet it ended up so unknown. Speaking of sprites, would you say Star Ocean is worth a massive VP fan's time? I am a bit curious about the series. Oooh, what I most remember? That's a lot lol. But for me, the first things I think of when I think of Valkyrie Profile are these: Epic Tale of a Holy Death which plays during the Prologue at the Weeping Lily Meadow, and just hearing it juet gets me so bad. Hearing Lucian plead for Platina not to forget him as she died in his arms, Lenneth and Lucian's kiss in the Meadow, and last but not least Lenneth and Lucian finally reuniting at the end of the game. Those are always the very first things I think about when I think of this game. Also Lezard. Nothing specific about him, he's always just there when I think of it. XD Holy hell, sorry for the essay in your comments! It just always makes me so, so very happy to see anyone talk about the series at all because it's so damn obscure. Hopefully, Valkyrie Elysium will bring this practically dead fandom some life when it releases. It looks insanely different and it's most definitley either a different universe or a spin-off, but I'll still give it a shot! I'm here for anything at this point, lol.
Game looks wonderful on a CRT. This and Star Ocean 2 are some of the best mainly 2D looking games on the PS. Tri-Ace really got the most out of their 2D assets in the games they made.
Despite being labeled Hard Difficulty, it is actually pretty manageable. If you get a specific accessory, you can take some of the broken weapons you find and transmute them into some of the strongest gear in the first half of the game. This particular trick only works in Normal and Hard mode, and it makes Easy mode a little harder. Also, Easy Mode locks you out of the best ending since certain dungeons and Einjeriar are not accessible. Hard mode does not have some of the easier dungeons, but the ones they substitute are significantly better in design and have way cooler bosses to deal with. Be aware that the end game is a bit harder with bosses and regular enemies having absurd HP, but if you were taking your time and finding/creating/transmuting the best gear and have a team that you can get a good groove with, these battles are not any harder than on normal mode.
Personnally, I love Silmeria. The fact that the battle system was similar with 3D evading moves made the fighting system an amazing one. The OST also was great. Only the story was too classical
What do I remember most about it besides how to pronounce "einherjar?" The finishers. Some of the most beautiful attacks you'd find in an RPG at the time coupled with memorable voice lines.
It is rather weird how all the reviews and commentators on this game say it wrong. She literally says it at the beginning of every non boss battle. There's no hard j. Ein hair e r
@@jameslockwood8840 it made me have to go and look it up. Because hey, maybe it's Valkyrie saying it wrong all this time. It's possible right? No. She's right, everyone else is wrong.
Hi! I‘m from germany and this is a part of our myths, folklore and legends. Maybe i can help: The word means "the alone fighting warrior" so first of all the word "Ein" is the german word for "One" Herjah or Herier (both are correct) is an old nordic word for honorable fallen. We use the word "Herr" in germany as a polite word for "Man" So you can say it in parts: Ein-Herr-Ja if you want or Ein-Herr-A without the J. Both versions are fine 😊
I remember picking this up complete for $19 in a clearance bin in GameStop I think my favorite part of the game would have to be the characters. With exception to the spell casters everyone else feels very different. You couldn't just slam just whoever into your party and button mash, you had to think and plan accordingly.
Nice video! FYI Valkyrie Profile Lenneth is coming to PS5 this month with the release of Valkyrie Elysium, good opportunity to bring the series to more individuals
I remember seeing this game growing up and I almost bought it but I bought The Legend of Dragoon instead which is my favorite game love it but I never ended up buying Valkyrie Profile but I have now been playing through it for the first time along with replaying LoD! Having a lot of fun so far and enjoying the nostalgia from our childhood!
Bought a psp right before the PlayStation marketplace went down JUST to have a way to get legend of dragoon. It’s sole purpose to this day as a vessel of legend of dragoon. Best game from my childhood.
I love that the game feels like both a 2D platformer and an rpg. The combo system makes the gameplay feel much more engaging and the exploration is more fun as you jump around and use crystals to interact with the environments.
If you preorder the new Valkyrie game you get the Lenmeth version as a digital download when Elysium drops. Everyone will have a chance to play this on one modern console.
I most remember always being an rpg fan when I finally found them and I played countless hours on final fantasy and other games. I always saw this game on the back of my ff7 guide and always wanted to play it but I never saw it anywhere :(
Definitely a great game, but yeah I hated how convoluted getting the endings was. Seemed a bit short from what I remember too. Legend of Dragoon however, God what an amazing game. I hope the rumors of it's release on PS5 untouched is true, I also hope it's not specifically for that garbage tier subscription package and you can just buy it.
This was such a awesome game! I rememberer not finishing it thought because there was some sort of global timer? Idk. But I’m glad you finally talked about it cause I’ve never seen anyone talk about this amazing game. Looks like I need to pull out my psp and start up a new game! Thanks 🙏🏼
I played Valkyrie Profile 2... absolutely love it. I never looked into this and that is an oversight. A big one. What I just saw just about blew my socks off. The sprite work looks phenomenal, no hyperbole. Art is on point. I already figured the game would be good, played it's sequel and I'm a fan of Tri Ace, but what I just saw... The level of sprite detail is an absolute treasure. It is rare as most things wanna go 3D (like it's sequel) & I'm the kinda guy who still geeks out over SotN & Rondo's sprite work... Thanks for the vid, now I'm putting this on the list. Overlooked no longer!
I got this on release day. And the strat guide. It's my all time favorite game. It's worth it's $400 price tag. Every penny. Can't wait for Valkyrie Elysium!
This game is truly one of a kind and I'm excited to see it come back on the PS4/5 alongside Elysium. The atmosphere in this series is truly one of a kind.
Brilliant review for a brilliant game, as per usual. The individual stories are the most stand-out parts of the game, besides the amazing animation and spritework, due to the emotional impact.
I was too young for the OG release of this and was most likely still neck deep but into Pokémon Yellow and Silver. But by the time the PSP port came out I was all onboard. Figures I got the last copy in the store…For sure the most unique game I played to that point. Definitely felt like I was walking on eggshells through my runs and I restarted twice. Never had to do that any game before or since. 3rd time getting stuck I did not return to it as I was still a child but the game fascinated me and always stayed in my head. Still have the copy and never wanted to emulate it for some reason. Seeing as how it is coming to PSN this fall and I am years older I think I owe it to this game to finally finish it. No matter how many restarts it takes me this time.
Fun, but I got stuck and couldn't figure out what to do. I'll have to pick it back up again If you like this you might also like Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Endless Frontier (and its fan-translated sequel) for DS, or Indivisible for more modern systems. Also the Project X Zone games, but I'm not a big fan since they're just a series of battles with breaks in between to equip stuff and save
Besides what everyone else will say about the game, what I remember most is that the English dub actors are almost all from Pokemon. Definitely heard a few familiar voices in there.
I remember playing this game a long time ago. I got to the world map and got confused and turned it off unfortunately I never went back to it, maybe one day I will.
I remember this game and Silmeria being one of my fave games of all time. The characters and stories were so memorable to me. The gameplay as well was unique and so much fun. I tried the Elysium demo and hated it. Everything I loved about the initial two games were gone. I played as much as I could, hoping I would at least see einjhar or anyone to interact with. But it just seemed to go on and on and on like typical Square Enix action RPG games. I'm quite sad about it as it means we probably will never see VP return to what made it amazing in the first place.
Star Ocean is my fave rpg for ps2. Till the end of time. I have Valkyrie profile for ps2 + two manuals somewhere in my messy room. I have it also for psp but my psp crapped out and I can't seem to get one anywhere. So when I heard that the ps4 port of Valkyrie Lennth is coming with the deluxe preorder edition of Valkyrie Elysium, I almost had a heart attack. I can finally get to play it again on ps4...
Haven't played this in a long time although my introduction to it was by the PSP version of Valkyrie Profile Lenneth but i had fun with it. I'll might give it another try eventually
I remember getting the game and getting stuck there was no online guilds back then I had to wait for the walkthrough book to come out witch at the time had to wait 4 months for then I finally beat it
Can't wait to dive into this again when elysium is released later this month. The deluxe edition comes with a copy of VP: Lenneth; the psp remaster of the original...
My favorite game ever. The only thing I think is not that great is the fact that it's very cheeseable with Auto item but still there's a lot of mechanics to take into consideration that makes this game so rich. Also, probably one of the most underrated game soundtracks ever, probably because its popularity which I think was overshadowed by the FF franchise
I wouldn't say overlooked, but it's more of overshadowed by Tri Ace's other title called Star Ocean 1 and 2, along with other cult classic and popular JRPGs that was released on its time. It has similar fate to FF9: Both are amazing and unique JRPG of their own, but couldn't get traction because people keeps talking about the other titles from the same developer that are far more popular.
eyes closed. this game is an absolute must play, and its an amazing game, Xenogears got the same treatment.. absolute perfection but people didn't play it , cause these games are super serious and with dark theme

I haven’t played this game but just from the game footage I can tell it was a huge inspiration to the gameplay of Invisible.
yeah Indivisible copied a lot from Valkyrie Profile
I remember buying this day one when it first came out. I loved the gorgeous sprite work, beautiful music, and the sad and haunting story really stuck with me. Sadly I could never fully wrap my head around the gameplay and eventually lost interest. Now I find it a game I prefer watching versus actually playing it.
Same... just didnt click or make sense on how to develop a final boss team.
So it was tragic? Did the lass goddess die in the end, even after reborn? Or the lad who has fled with her?
It dies have a hugh learning curve. Took me a while to get it. But when it clicked, ...the experience is unlike any other.
Believe it or not I did the same with Earthbound.
I just wasnt ready for awesome games as a kid (:
@Scruff Zilla What was it about the gameplay that you couldn't get to grips with?
I didn’t own a PlayStation when I was young, but I remember all the kids were talking about this game when it came out. I finally was able to play it when it was Re-release on the PSP.
Masterpiece 💎❤️
THAT'S A REALLY LONG SWORD!! 👀
XD
Holy hell, sorry for the essay in your comments!
The game is coming to PlayStation 4 and 5.
@@dustingonzalez8080 Oh my god, it is? I can't believe I missed that somehow aaa, thank you for letting me know man!
@@OkamiLyra it comes out the same day as Valkyrie Elysium. Only for PlayStation though.
@@dustingonzalez8080 Glad I have a PS4 then!
I have a pretty big valkyrie profile collection and is my favourite game of all time. I'm happy to see all this hype for this hidden gem.
Game looks wonderful on a CRT. This and Star Ocean 2 are some of the best mainly 2D looking games on the PS. Tri-Ace really got the most out of their 2D assets in the games they made.
Played the PSP Version nearly 10 years ago. The 2D Style with the Background was stunning. and the music... Just wow!!!
Thanks for noting this!
Maybe i can help:
The word means "the alone fighting warrior" so first of all the word "Ein" is the german word for "One"
Herjah or Herier (both are correct) is an old nordic word for honorable fallen. We use the word "Herr" in germany as a polite word for "Man"
So you can say it in parts: Ein-Herr-Ja if you want or Ein-Herr-A without the J. Both versions are fine 😊
Strangely, I don't remember much of this game but I remember enjoying it very much.
Thanks for the great video. This just got me pumped for the upcoming sequel Valkyrie Elysium and this re-release on digital storefronts.
I remember picking this up complete for $19 in a clearance bin in GameStop
I think my favorite part of the game would have to be the characters. With exception to the spell casters everyone else feels very different. You couldn't just slam just whoever into your party and button mash, you had to think and plan accordingly.
Right on, that's a great find by the way! This sells for a lot now!
@@Xygor Yeah it does, but that find was 20 odd years ago. 😅
My favorite JRPG ever
Nice video! FYI Valkyrie Profile Lenneth is coming to PS5 this month with the release of Valkyrie Elysium, good opportunity to bring the series to more individuals
That's right, thanks for the info!
This game was amazing. Cant wait for the vid :)
Lezard is the most badass necromancer in the history of RPGs...
I’m a life long gamer, played hundreds of games and this is my all time favorite game.
Bought a psp right before the PlayStation marketplace went down JUST to have a way to get legend of dragoon. It’s sole purpose to this day as a vessel of legend of dragoon. Best game from my childhood.
I plan to review it soon!
I love that the game feels like both a 2D platformer and an rpg. The combo system makes the gameplay feel much more engaging and the exploration is more fun as you jump around and use crystals to interact with the environments.
Great review! Will check more from you.
If you like this one, I bet you will like the others!
I never played it but when I saw the video I though TH-cam messed up and showed star ocean 2 then you mentioned it ... gotta try it, somehow.
I almost didn't graduate from elementary school because of this game. 😂
If you preorder the new Valkyrie game you get the Lenmeth version as a digital download when Elysium drops. Everyone will have a chance to play this on one modern console.
I most remember always being an rpg fan when I finally found them and I played countless hours on final fantasy and other games. I always saw this game on the back of my ff7 guide and always wanted to play it but I never saw it anywhere :(
My friend found a copy at this parents house from back in the day and gave it to me. :)
Nice find for you!
Thanks 🙏🏼
It’s getting rereleased for ps4 and ps5
I love this game! I couldn't remember any of the character names until I saw Jalanda! The music is awesome too!
This game is truly one of a kind and I'm excited to see it come back on the PS4/5 alongside Elysium. The atmosphere in this series is truly one of a kind.
Now its on PSN, hurray
Woohoo!
Heard this game is super expensive now . Really enjoyed that game . Seraphic gate is my favorite part
Valkyrie profile I one of the best games ever
Brilliant review for a brilliant game, as per usual. The individual stories are the most stand-out parts of the game, besides the amazing animation and spritework, due to the emotional impact.
Yeah man, the sprites are killer. Very unique combat system. Great game. Did you play the second one on PS2?
@@Xygor I haven't, but I do have it. One of these days I hope to.
I'll have to pick it back up again
If you like this you might also like Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Endless Frontier (and its fan-translated sequel) for DS, or Indivisible for more modern systems. Also the Project X Zone games, but I'm not a big fan since they're just a series of battles with breaks in between to equip stuff and save
Thanks for the recommendation!
I remember Freya kicking my ass because I wasn't progressing fast enough
Besides what everyone else will say about the game, what I remember most is that the English dub actors are almost all from Pokemon. Definitely heard a few familiar voices in there.
I remember playing this game a long time ago. I got to the world map and got confused and turned it off unfortunately I never went back to it, maybe one day I will.
I own this game and still need to play it
I remember this game and Silmeria being one of my fave games of all time.
One of the greatest games ever made. Looking forward to the next one.
For anyone who wants to play this game it's getting ported to consoles on September 29th.
Haven't played this in a long time although my introduction to it was by the PSP version of Valkyrie Profile Lenneth but i had fun with it. I'll might give it another try eventually
I remember getting the game and getting stuck there was no online guilds back then I had to wait for the walkthrough book to come out witch at the time had to wait 4 months for then I finally beat it
Will be nice to play this game on my PS5 this month :)
That's right!
The psp version is being ported to the ps4 and ps5 and is arriving 12/21/2022
This is my favorite videogame ever ♡
Yes, Finally :D!!!!
What i remember the most from Valkyrie Profile?
-> It shall be engraved upon your soul... A divine assault! Nibelung Valesti!
I was just slightly too young to play this game when it came out. I really enjoyed it but got incredibly confused and stuck.
Whats the song you use for your intro?
Magus' Theme from Chrono Trigger.
Can't wait to dive into this again when elysium is released later this month. The deluxe edition comes with a copy of VP: Lenneth; the psp remaster of the original...
Great suff as always.
I tried to get into this game back then but couldn't figure out its combat system. I guess I should give it another chance.
Apparently the digital deluxe version of Valkyrie Elysium that comes out in September is gonna have Lenneth with it as well FWIW
They are porting Lenneth to PS4/PS5 PSN by itself as well in September. It just got listed.
Good points!
eyes closed. this game is an absolute must play, and its an amazing game, Xenogears got the same treatment.. absolute perfection but people didn't play it , cause these games are super serious and with dark theme
I tried this game on my psp and never finished it. I didn't understand the combat. I should pick it back up and see if I can figure out some combos
An all-time classic. The enhanced PSP version is available on Android for like ten bucks.
Luckily it’s coming to ps4 and ps5 in the end of September.
I loved this game. One of the best ways to cry myself to sleep.
my favorite jrpg of all time
I always wanted to play this game cause it looks incredible and i always found it boring AF. Can´t wait to see your take on it...
Totally agree. I picked it up on release and didn’t really jive with it, but i wish I didn’t sell it due to its current value.
@@toddc7450 even with the current value I’ll never sell.
