It was actually quite a juvenile argument to make. If that's what Stephen thinks, then why doesn't he apply the same logic to every other mass that enters our solar system? Why are rocks and asteroids just rocks and asteroids, but this thing is a spaceship? The evidence says they behaved no differently. That is what Neil is saying.
@@a.a9021 That was my thought too. By Stephen's logic, ALL comets or meteors passing us by could be alien in origin. The only thing that has people excited about this object is it's weird shape. It's like mistaking faces for mountains on Mars.
I, too, cringe when people use the term "UFO" to mean "extraterrestrial spacecraft". But, when people say, "There's _proof_ that UFOs exist!", you kind of have to agree. But, that doesn't mean that they are spaceships. Yes, there _are_ *unidentified* flying objects witnessed all of the time. But, that's just what they are: unidentified.
I like that, compared to last time he was on tv speaking about it, Neil has taken the UFO footage more seriously. We all better hope it's Aliens by the way, because if any other country can outfly USA's jets with something the size of an airliner there's a big problem. Aliens at least have a good chance of being peaceful.
2:04 I definitely love this type of argument: sounds like arguing, but it is funny and straight to the point all at the same time. There should be WAY more like this everywhere.
Unfortunately for Stephen's argument, the way slingshot manoeuvres work is that you use your engines at the closest point to the gravity well, so following a ballistic path rules out a slingshot.
I mean for comedic purposes yea, it was great, but that type of argument doesn't get you very far. It's like when Phoebe asks Ross how he knows nobody put the fossils there. Shifting the burden of proof that way would be like me stating Hogwarts is real and telling you to disprove it.
That thing is interesting and all but they should start looking in our skies because theyve been here for years ..ive seen one and i had 5 people with me that saw it..plus its thousands of sightings every year..not fairy tales

Great, one of the smartest men around wants us to be intergalactic ashtray theives. As if our planets reputation isn't bad enough without being caught stealing ashtrays.
Whats funny about this is that this object suddenly stopped following the expected gravitational path and accelerated faster than the laws of gravity would permit.
"suddenly stopped following the expected gravitational path and accelerated faster than the laws of gravity would permit": It did accelerate which would be normal if it was jettisoning matter, which brought scientists wondering if it's a comet or an asteroid. "something black science man apparently did not know"... something nobody knew.
@Aaron Richards yes... but if you reference the date of this video... that acceleration had not yet happened. I was just pointing out that he was using our understanding of the law of gravity to prove it was not alien.... when it then did do something unexpected later on. I'm not saying it is aliens. I'm just pointing out that his main argument for why it wasn't aliens was upset.

Occam's razor is key here. Maybe the engine is off, maybe slingshot effect, maybe, maybe. Go with the simplest explanation with the least assumptions, it's just an interstellar rock.
Occam's Razor is such an underutilised framework for looking at things. I completely agree. People should stop trying to attribute grand explanations to things they don't understand.
=( So true. Luckily he is so damn old surely he won't last too much longer I mean I'm 24 so maybe I'll live long enough for the aliens to see that he is gone and give us another try next time they'll swipe right in this interstellar tinder app we call a universe. hahaha
Keksi What is "actual science" based on? Don't you have to make certain assumptions to conduct sciences? Like that your repeatable observations produce true results?
MetallicRain -- I've met clowns. They do a lot more work preparing for their jobs than Trump ever thought of. Neil deGrasse Tyson would at least choose the most able, experienced and intelligent people possible to help him. He wouldn't sell positions to the people determined to destroy government agencies and public lands to profit themselves and others.
Neil's point isn't that it's definitely not aliens, it's that it's most likely not aliens, based on what we already know and can prove mathematically. Stephen's point is that if there's a .0001% chance that it's aliens, then we should treat it as such. They're both just having fun.
Right, but it's not because there wasn't an answer it's because the answer isn't good TV. It's the same as the UFO part, an object is unidentified, therefore an alien civilization did it? An alien race could have thrown the object, but the likelihood that they threw an object that happens to pass by us compared to a natural interstellar passage that has been observed in other solar systems _often_ is extremely low. Plus, would you be that guy that interrupts the hosts joke and viewer reaction with an uninteresting explanattion?
@@sam23696 you can't compare omuamua with just another UFO. I think that comparison is quite absurd because unlike omuamua, there has been no conclusive evidence as to whether UFOs are really from another solar system which is not ours. Show me one proper studies/research paper that objectively states that UFOs are an interstellar object. Omuamua however has been the first ever object to be detected as an interstellar object. And I think this discovery is embarks a new milestone in space research. And also,I'm not completely sure about whether aliens threw it into our solar system, but also at the same time I can't completely disregard that argument either. And that's why I thought it was a valid question. We can't conclusively tell if it was just a passage ,or that aliens threw it. It's a speculative thing. Do you also realize that we have been sending messages into space so that aliens (if they exist) could decode that message and find us? Read about it. I don't know why you think the likelihood is extremely "low". And plus, do you really think Neil has cared about people while trying to make a point? From watching most of his videos,he has always reached every extent or interrupted just to state and prove a point. But in this case however,Neil couldn't address it and I think that's why he was left speechless.
@@winviki123 You seem to have belligerently assumed intellectual superiority in your reply, so a discussion with you is probably a waste of time, but I'll humor you anyway. In most of Neil's videos he is on stage at a Q&A or delivering a speech or lecture. In every talk show like this he behaves this way fitting in with the theme of the show, in this case laughing alongside the Hosts performance while the audience clap. I don't doubt the presence of life elsewhere in the Universe, that would be irrational, however I do doubt the theories of alien visitors or any theory regarding nearby alien organisms about as much as I doubt Neil deGrasse Tyson, an _astrophysicist_ , was speechless at any point regarding the topic of astronomy. Now, while I understand the interest regarding the first ever detected interstellar object, you have to understand that interstellar objects are difficult to observe, as most theoretical objects would pass by along the elliptical, and not as a hyperbolic passage. Do not confuse our first observation with rarity, it's likely to occur often enough. My comparison with a standard UFO sighting was inspired mostly by the conversation that immediately followed, perhaps you have forgotten the contents of the video over a month. And the reason I can, and will make that comparison is because the logical assumptions people make regarding alien visitors and the passage of this object and alien visitors are the same, with the latter being to a lesser degree. We have absolutely no evidence _at all_ that alien life exists nearby. We have no data at all to conclude that this object, or any atmospheric UFO, is or was manipulated by an alien species. SETI exists to find that data, and I hold out every hope that they will one day find something. Until then we will have to make a decision, based on the data with the least number of assumptions. Is it an alien spaceship or an alien manipulated object passing by for a reason we don't understand, or is it an interstellar rock with a hyperbolic trajectory that occurred naturally? I can think the likelihood that the former is extremely low based on the lack of evidence of aliens observed throughout astronomy in our history. I would like to know why you think it _isn't_ extremely low. What about our history of observation gives you the impression that ʻOumuamua is more likely then that to be of alien origin?
@@sam23696 "is it an interstellar rock with a hyperbolic trajectory that occurred naturally" The strange thing is that in 2018, astronomers discovered Oumuamua accelerated non-gravitationally.
U fuck off thats what he meant
We live in at a time where people use "literally" to mean figuratively. I don't think words have much meaning any more.
Cinzia Pompa I can watch and listen to Neil all day. The man is my hero.
He just sold 1 more copy of his book. What an interview!
Yes!
I'll take 20
2:04 I definitely love this type of argument: sounds like arguing, but it is funny and straight to the point all at the same time.
There should be WAY more like this everywhere.
i wish this interview happened a few weeks later, after the damn thing accelerated to beyond calculated escape velocity.
@Navigator Please don't jump to conclusions that fast
They where just using the heat from our sun to recharge
Really?
Cigar shaped UFO have been spoted by both soviét union Destroyed probe and NASA around Mars and on our Moon atmosphere.
It accelerated? Didn't know that...
I don't believe that thing to be an alien ship but clap clap clap on Steven's argument.
+Peter Taylor what fun is you thinking you know anything about astrophysics
Ernesto Marcos Yep its an argument from ignorance, but entertaining all the same.
I can't tell you how much i appreciate this, this is a genuine funny video that brings also a lot of information, i love this, please never stop having scientists on this show
Frank bucklys interview of avi loeb is an intelligent argumented presentation and explanation of his view with comments on the unlikeliness and or flaws of papers trying to dismiss it. The attitude avi loeb keeps showing the manner in which he speaks is the best representation of an intellectual. 6:29 - It's adorable to see Neil's fanboy side x3
Jessens98 pure gold .
I'm just pointing out that his main argument for why it wasn't aliens was upset.
and that means it is not comet or asteroid like fakn DeGrasse are bullshiting

You can tell these two are legit friends by how much fun they have in their exchanges!
Damn stephen using gravity to burn neil.
Stop it. Stephen and Neil have been going at it since Comedy Central, and Stephen's bit was a call back to an earlier debate they had about Creationism, and the inability of science to disprove God. Neil motioned with side eye because it's Stephen's go-to logic for any science quandary.

Occam's Razor is boring though. I'd rather think about aliens all day long than just some interstellar rock.
That is the mindset of anyone with a religion.
Fair point. Though, there is more evidence to support science.
Occam's razor is a scientist's best friend ,and a conspiracy theories's worst enemy

It zoomed in searching for intelligent life, heard 20 seconds of a Trump speech, sent the 'NO' signal home, and zoomed off to the next target.
Hahahahaha... that was truly funny!
=( So true. Luckily he is so damn old surely he won't last too much longer I mean I'm 24 so maybe I'll live long enough for the aliens to see that he is gone and give us another try next time they'll swipe right in this interstellar tinder app we call a universe. hahaha

That's why they shot off the engines, they were worried Trump would start sending tweets their ways.
Keksi What is "actual science" based on? Don't you have to make certain assumptions to conduct sciences? Like that your repeatable observations produce true results?
I LOVE Niel!!! He is so funny and smart!
A late night show segment with neil will teach you more about science than the educational system will ever do during your school time
Depending on what school you go to. And how much is the government investing in the educational system, if it's a public school.

*Neil deGrasse Tyson for president!*
Can you imagine? We would become a type 1 civilization in less than 1 year. Let's compare with 45th presidency that has achieved....NOTHING
One clown is not enough for you?
MetallicRain -- I've met clowns. They do a lot more work preparing for their jobs than Trump ever thought of. Neil deGrasse Tyson would at least choose the most able, experienced and intelligent people possible to help him. He wouldn't sell positions to the people determined to destroy government agencies and public lands to profit themselves and others.
Personally, I prefer to leave the politics to the politicians. We can all see the results of letting a businessman run the country.
Imagine a scientist as President! That would be amazing. How come only politicians and reality tv stars get the job?
By far one of my FAVORITE Colbert segments ever! Love to watch Colbert and Tyson together, hilarious and educational!
'its probably not aliens because its trajectory followed gravity.'
Thats what the aliens want you to think.
Neil's point isn't that it's definitely not aliens, it's that it's most likely not aliens, based on what we already know and can prove mathematically. Stephen's point is that if there's a .0001% chance that it's aliens, then we should treat it as such. They're both just having fun.
I know, as was I.
ETs disguise their ships as clouds too! :)

When people say "black men are stupid", I point them to this guy.
+nahor88 And this is known as an anomaly. [Just kidding for anyone lacking a sense of humor]
2:58 wow that was a pretty valid legitimate argument that Neil couldn't address
@@sam23696 "is it an interstellar rock with a hyperbolic trajectory that occurred naturally"
The strange thing is that in 2018, astronomers discovered Oumuamua accelerated non-gravitationally.
Therefore it cannot be a simple rock with a simple trajectory. Something accelerated it, something that is not gravity...

@@nmarbletoe8210 bruh. You just linked a report detailing the events of natural comet out gassing. This causes outgassing which can alter the trajectory over vast time scales. It is still natural.
