That question is too relative to answer meaning each persons case is different and therefore the tooling and desire may not be there. That person will also have to judge on how long the item will have to last and factor that in for materials. However I must agree with you and sem tex that there is satisfaction in not only doing it yourself but also as in this case knowing what you made will last longer than anything you can buy from a box store. Great video!

I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.

E X C E L L E N T CONTENT !!! Finally !!! someone that knows how to use a file properly and how to MIG weld right. And how to use safety to do their DIY crafts. IT'S REFRESHING to see someone that shows the PROPER ways!
Here's a tip, a friend of mine was a machinist at a factory where they build excavators and such, and he told me They kept breaking DrillTaps. He said one of the new hirees told them to use CRISCO VEGETABLE SHORTENING, in a can, instead of TapFree or any other tapping liquid. They tried it and it was told me that the company bought out the grocery stores in that area, cause it worked so well. You can POWER TAP using Crisco Vegetable Shortening. (not crisco oil. I'm talking about the paste type...similar to LARD.) Just put some in a paper cup and run it up on your tap and start the drill, (or mill), in back gear and let er eat. Then stop and reverse, using a rubber-band on your pull handle. That way you've got an UP pressure on your spindle and the tap isn't having to do double duty to push it out If it's a drill-press, it already HAS a return spring. I believe you'll like this tip.
I SUBBED. (Pay no attention to the haters. They have to complain or they'll blow up!)
The thing, people just can't grasp, is things MEAN MORE to you when you craft them yourself. It's YOUR SHOP made BY YOUR TOOLS, hanging up in YOUR SHOP. Any knothead can go BUY store bought tools. It's a whole nother ballgame to make and use your own design of tool.!!!
    Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸.

Good food for thought. I have kept a length of stainless steel rod given to me years back and kept the rod for such a project using Linear bearings, this is far simpler. Not to take the wind out of your sails but in addition would be good to include a longitudinal slide as well with lockable stops and on the Router carriage. Probably closer to a poor man's CNC to be able to router shapes into a bench top or door. Great concept of yours.

I like it. watch out for those fumes from the galvenize when you weld, that stuff can kill you.
Maybe instead of a router you could use an electric plane? much wider cut. Or maybe either one. For roughing, a router attachment... for finishing an electric plane attachment on the gantry
BTW, you know you are one step away from a CNC machine, right? ;)

I think you could do with a larger diameter router cutter but the holder and bench are great I take it you are going to fit motors + cnc controller to it, you could cut beautiful signs with it, I just wish I had the room to build one I built a nice 3d metal cutting machine but it needs up grading to a better spindle motor as the one I fitted was only 500w so it can only handle small cutters but if I fit one of the 3 Kw inverter motors it should be able to do anything that I would want to cut, I have been thinking of building a 4ft x 4ft table but it would have to be outside so I would need to either remove all of the electronics between jobs but at almost 70 I don't think that I will be getting jobs from other people any more as most days I have trouble with just standing up.

Add some movable stops and spacers for the slides and some locating pieces for the material and you can make all kinds of square pockets, spaced recesses for shelves and much more.
Have been thinking about making one of these for a while now but haven't gotten around to it(2 actually, one for a regular router and one small one for a dremel...)

    • @KenFullman

Make the sole plate interchangeable and you can even use it for other tools. The same unit, with a circular saw installed, would make a perfect panel saw. You could even have it vertically mounted in this mode, to save space. Swap out the circular saw for an angle grinder and you can cut sheet metal.

@JoeNunes345 : I'm kind of disappointed, too. Awesome jig, though. On the other hand, I've also thought about something like this for myself (and there are similar designs, though mostly of wood). I'm also curious about the cost of materials for this vs a similar design that substitutes less-expensive material when it wouldn't sacrifice quality, durability, etc.

At work, they were dismantling a video wall that was built using square channeled extruded aluminum. Every time I saw the piles of metal, I thought of the myriad of uses of it. First one was a CNC rig, but this flattening jig would be another great use case, especially if you don't own a welder.

A lot of work to make a router table work as a planer.

    • @danburch9989
      @danburch9989 ปีที่แล้ว

Most table top planers can only handle boards that are 12" or less in width unless you spend $thousands for one with a wider capacity. This is limited by the space available. This is slower than other methods. Also, table top planers have an issue with snips at the end of the board as they exit the planer. There's a trade off either in cost, capacity or speed.
