    The only reason to keep him is the buyout is crippling. It is NOT losing that is the problem, it is how bad the losses look.

      100% agree! There's losing, and then there is this bs. This year is inexcusable at a place like FSU. If the buyout wasn't what it was, he'd almost assuredly be gone. I think 23-4 and the buyout get him at least 2 more years to make changes and try to fix it. Pending this type of season doesn't happen again. There's no guarantee the next coach will do any better, and as bad as 1-8 is, he did win 19 straight and a conference title. I can see the argument for both options, but whatever path they take, this type of season can never happen again.

    The fact that there is zero progression from the orange bowl until now tells me that Mike is not our guy. He is a great coach but he is scared to rock the boat or lay down the law. Why haven't I seen him chewing anybody's ass on GameDay. I vote for him to be fired yesterday

      Agreed. There’s no tough love for these young men. He’s so worried about their confidence and self esteem he forgot how to push these players. These young men confident level and self esteem is beyond measure and it started when they were 9 years old on peewee football.

    Great discussion on the topic, guys! Part of me wants to cut bait and start over. Another part of me wants to give him a chance to fix it. That buyout is massive, so they probably aren't firing him anyway. There are too many big projects going on right now. As you said, this was the absolute worst-case scenario after biting off all of the other stuff. This is just an absolute dumpster fire and should never happen at a place like FSU. I guess time will tell... Appreciate you guys helping get us through this season. I know it's not fun to talk about it, but I enjoyed the show as usual. Go Noles!

I don't think they are going to fire him, but he's lost a lot of trust, and all the good will is gone. Gonna be one of the more crucial offseasons in program history.

    Is a 4-8 or 5-7 2025 season good enough to save Norvell? If not go ahead and pull the trigger now, because you will be even more in the hole next year after hiring all the new assistants. Plus the money you will have to throw in the transfer portal to sign half a team.
    (Noles fan for life, and I was a big Norvell supporter. But he completely lost me with the loss to Duke. And absolutely zero fire against Miami)

    • @plantthespear
      @plantthespear  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I would say no, it's not good enough, and I can't disagree with your points. I think it needs to be bowl eligibility and progress in recruiting at a minimum next year. I'm just in the mindset that one really good off-season could get things back on track. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, though. They are gonna have to throw money at transfers anyway, and bringing in a new staff could really help land some guys. There's no guarantee that the new coach will do better than 4-8 / 5-7, either. As bad as 1-8 is, a lot of "good" coaches never had a 13 win season with a conference title. I'm totally with you that I'm about to jump off the Norvell train because this is inexcusable at a place like FSU. If they lose to Charleston Southern, I'm probably out. There's just part of me that says save the buyout money and put it towards the best staff money can buy, and it's time to pony up for players. I put a lot of this year on coaching, but the same staff did go 23-4 with better players, but these are who they brought in, and that's on them. The recruiting has to get better, period. I can see the argument for both sides. Either way, this is going to be one of the more crucial offseasons in program history.

      @ true, we are screwed either way on the money front. But I think at this point it’s less of a risk on a new coach (depending on who you could get) because a new coach after a 1-11 2-10 campaign can explain away a 5-7 season a lot easier to recruits/ boosters/fans.

      That's exactly why I'm not so quick to fire Norvell. A new coach is guaranteed to have success, and then you just paid all that money to end up at the same place. As bad as 1-8 is, there are a lot of good coaches that have never won 19 games in a row and a conference championship. I see 6 coaches being released, and several support staff. 1) Adkins, hasn’t developed anyone,: 2) Yak, running game is weak, but is it the line?3) Duggans, can’t teach them to block:3)Tokars, hasn’t developed anyone:4) Shannon, can’t recruit, can’t coach:5) Fuller, 3rd and Fuller. Doesn’t make adjustments: 6) and this one hurts, keep Odell in the system, not as the defensive line coach. He should leave when he wants to leave, but hasn’t recruited anyone since Timmy Jernagan( spelling). 7) Surtain is a great recruiter in Miami. Every player doesn’t communicate, which is coaching…. I really believe he will have to get young coaches that relate to the players, that can recruit. The game has changed. Now…. support staff:GM hasn’t done anything, probably involved with the portal accusations, also anyone that has to deal with the NIL. The NIL people screwed up this year. Thanks for the show, I was late again. Please respond if you can and give me your thoughts. I really like Norvell, but I’m tired of hearing his excuses, fundamentals, reputations. These young men have been playing the game for years

    • @plantthespear
      @plantthespear  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree with you. I would think Surtain is the only one that is "safe." I worry more about Surtain getting poached than anything. I would also consider keeping David Johnson because the running backs aren't bad. The OL is just trash. His recruiting has been pretty good, too. Atkins needs to go, but I worry he will be retained. He doesn't need to be the OC at a minimum, but are we really gonna pay an OL coach 1.3M to field the worst unit in college football? I would hope not. Dugans should already be gone. Thompsen is just meh. He did get Landen Thomas, but that's about all he's done. I have mixed feelings on Tokars. He's only been the on-field QB coach for 2 years, and that is when JT really took off. I can't blame all the washouts at QB on him. Neither Brock nor Luke have looked great, but their supporting cast sucks.
      On defense, Randy can go, JP can move to special teams only, and it's time to force Odell to retire. He can stay around the program if he chooses. Now that analysts can coach, that would be a great role for him. As you mentioned, the recruiting just hasn't been good enough. I'd be happy with replacing Fuller, but other than 3rd down he's not terrible when they have talent.
      I think the entire off-field staff needs to be evaluated. The way they go about NIL needs to be reevaluated. They must start focusing on recruiting. Sure, the portal is a great way to plug holes on a roster, but you can't build your foundation from it. When things are this bad, everything must be questioned. At this point, Norvell is coaching for his job. If he nails this offseason, this could be turned around, but I worry the hole they have dug will be to deep to get out of. I'm tired of hearing the excuses, too. I think he knows he has to clean house and is just giving coach speak until the end of the season. He does look lost at times though which is concerning. This is going to be one of the most crucial offseasons in program history. I hope they get it right. Appreciate you tuning in as always!! 🫡 Go Noles!!

Run a GOFUNDME and see how quick that comes up with 64 million.

      I agree. We need a real OC who can call plays, and that also allows Norvell to keep a close watch on every aspect of the program. I think wholesale changes must be made. Surtain and David Johnson are probably the only assistants that I would consider retaining. If for no other reason than to get the stink of this season off the program with some fresh faces. Recruiting and development have to get better with whoever they bring in. They are also going to have to accept the fact that it's time to pay for top-tier players, and that might mean letting some dudes walk. It still may not work out, but I think spending the buyout or the best staff you can get would be the first move.

      I can't argue with that because you're right. The confusing part, though, is the same staff beat Miami, Clemson, LSU and Florida last year who "technically" had better rosters based on 247 talent rankings and blue-chip ratios. The same goes for 2022 minus Clemson.
      I do agree that coaching is a problem. I also think part of it is some of these players just aren't as good as they are perceived. Obviously, losing that much NFL caliber talent hurts, but we shouldn't be this bad. We took a number of transfers that were backups at other schools and now we see why. The lack of good recruiting is biting them now too. I also think after the snub and the way the NIL was handled this offseason plus there not being true leadership, we have culture issues, too. That part sucks because he had turned all that around and now it feels like we're back at square one.

    • @plantthespear
      @plantthespear  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would imagine it has to be a lot. Between lost game day revenue, booster donations and NIL funding, it has to be in the millions. Then you factor in the bowl money as you mentioned. Plus, I forgot to mention on the show about the ACC performance initiative that they just launched. They said a school could earn up to 25M extra. Well, we aren't getting any of that at 1 or 2 wins. His buyout is massive, but the regaining the lost revenue would help offset that. The only problem is you can't guarantee a new coach would be successful and bring all that back. You may be right, but personally, the only I see him getting fired this season is if they lose to Charleston Southern. I think he cleans house and gets next year with a warm seat. I guess we'll see, but this is going to be a crucial offseason.

      Firing a bunch of assistants will cost millions. Hiring a new set will cost even more money if this thing continues to go down the same road and Norvell and his new staff are to be replaced. I think if they do keep him and a new staff they are in it for at least 3 more years.

      If you fire a bunch of assistants this year it will cost millions for their guaranteed contracts.
      You then have to replace the coaches you just fired? These new guys will most likely have some kind of guaranteed contracts as well. It’s just the way it works these days.
      So, if things go south next season and Norvell is to be fired the new assistants you just hired 10 months ago will have to be paid too.
      So now you’ve just paid two groups of assistants not to coach.
